House Rules:

Gamelot is 24 hours on the weekends. This means we can handle any number of singles entrants that get thrown our way.
AND NO, YOU CAN'T CRASH AT GAMELOT. The owner would get in major trouble for it.

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINK unless by permission of the manager. Seriously, why would you want to go across the street, and buy something that Gamelot has for less:confused: Plus there was a lot of trash left over from the last tournament. Now, if you are getting something you can't get at Gamelot, chances are it is good. Anyways, just ASK first and you will be good. Or you will hear it from Cliff the owner.

Computer area is for paying customers only. There is now a LAN gaming area, with a plethora of games (sorry, no Starcraft) but only if you pay. You can expect to get kicked out if you go back there without paying.

THERE IS NO WIFI. So you will have to check your myspace/e-mail/smashboards/porn before you get to Gamelot. The only internet available will be to me behind the table. I will be running the brackets on my laptop.

Lastly, if you weren't thinking about bringing your wii/tv/power strips, no, take it, chances are we can make use of it. If it isn't needed, just put it in the car or something.

Cameras, camcorders, video recording equipment, bring it! I want to make this memorable.

Ok people, I will be of course as usual checking this thread often and posting when this section gets updated.

To answer your question, yes, 33% of the entry fee will be going to the store. If people think that's too much, may I remind you all that other places take half or offer fixed amounts for prizes.

This is how Felix ran all of the Smashalots in 2007, so I decided to keep it simple. The five dollars thing at Final Smash 2 was a pain.

Dude the $5 thing is much better. I would gladly volunteer to take registration and fees. It's so much better than taking money out of the pot. Regardless, count me in I guess, and most likely Austin, Hylian, and Kal as well.

I would be much happier with a $5 registration fee, however. But it's up to you.

will 33% be taken out of only singles??? or doubles and crews too?

Pretty much only singles, unless teams gets large. Also I don't know if crews will form. I'm willing to have exhibition events, but considering SOS pretty much hates the game with a burning passion, I dunno if there will be an SAK. If there was, it would be me, coach, betty and jose.

I still don't understand. >_<

Also, Mosquito, we'd rather have a $5 entry fee. Really, raking 33% of the pot is ridiculous. And while other stores may rake more, that in no way justifies you raking that ridiculous amount. And I am aware that the store owner will give you 11% of the entry fee, so, if you can't make it a $5 entry fee, at least make it a 22% rake.

Ughh.... this alone probably was probably the greatest amount of trouble I had with all the others. JF, I do appreciate the offer to help though. If I can count on you to help me with that, the entry will be a bit easier to manage.

I will try anyways. Just remember.... this is something I have to clear with the owner.

Everyone needs to understand that

1. I don't own the venue, and don't have the funds to just rent a place.

2. There is nothing that would justify saying that I don't deserve any compensation for running the event. I'm hyping it up, running the brackets, asking people to bring equipment, collecting the money, dealing with numerous questions, making sure people are playing their matches, and dealing with the owner.

3. The owner wants to share some of that money with me, that's fine. It will help cover all of the AV and power cords and memory cards that keep getting stolen from me at each tournament, among other things.

4. Saying that other stores take half of the pot is not a justification to do the same, but it's a business, and they all expect something in return. Consider yourself getting a deal.

5. If you do the math, it barely makes a difference in the total pot size.

10 dollars pot + 5 venue fee vs 66% pot and 33% venue fee.

It's almost superficial people.

6. It only makes sense that a store be compensated by the size of the event, not a fixed figure.

Except we're paying $15 to enter one event. If people decide not to enter that event, and enter others, we get "gipped."

While we may not lose a larger proportion of the money, we work considerably harder to place high in larger tournaments, and deserve to not lose that additional money we should be making. In other words, we could make just as much money in a smaller tournament without a rake, and it would be easier. So raking, instead of taking a door fee, costs us money.

I think your best option is to make it a $20 entry fee, in which you rake $5, so that you only rake 25% and the singles event is still $15.

$1 Falcon dittos on FD 2/3? Brawl, of course.
$1 Marth vs. Sheik in Melee, if you want.
And, instead of the first $1 money-match, we could do like, our actual Brawl mains. But that would be silly.

i dont see how the size of teams would affect whether money would be taken out of the pot. the pot for teams is never that much imo after splitting the winnings in half with your partner even when there are a lot of teams. and taking from the pot would make it worse.

i know you said that it wasnt up to you, and i think gamelot is a cool place, but what about considering other places? the D pad proved to be a great place for having tournaments. even though gamelot is bigger, i think most people in the smash community would say a little less space would be worth not having the pot being messed with.

its your tournament and up to you, but you said this issue was the biggest problem last time and it was such a problem because its such a big deal to all of us.

FYI: I've decided to not enter any brawl tournaments until the game gets better (if it ever gets that far.) I have to admit though, the game seems to moving at a faster pace from some recent tournament vids I've watched. Kills come at lower percents, there is more combos, and each player uses more potential out of the characters.

But I went to training mode, and realized that there isn't anything to practice for it.

I'll run the Brawl event, but I don't think I will enter.

Back to Melee, except I'm going to only be able to play Peach. It will be my first time as an RST player playing in a tournament.

Actually I'll look into the Dpad to see what they take for the pot (you REALLY need to understand that nothing is free and it's not a crime to have money taken out). There's a big problem though: if I'm the host, I'm going to need to guarantee a ride from my house to Dpad, since I should be the first person there. And I don't live near any smashers save Smiles. Taylor, I would have to probably get you to take me since Caveman could drive up 1604 either past my house, or I could meet up at UTSA.

Dpad is really far, and that will hurt the attendance. There's a billion people at UTSA hyped for Brawl, so I want them to attend. Gamelot is a MUCH more local choice. I can easily get myself there, seeing I live very close to it. Now don't get me wrong, Dpad is cool, but it's too far.

I'd like to not change things since I've worked with Cliff for a while now.

As for any future events I start up, Dpad is a possibility.

i dont see how the size of teams would affect whether money would be taken out of the pot. the pot for teams is never that much imo after splitting the winnings in half with your partner even when there are a lot of teams. and taking from the pot would make it worse.
To make my answer simple: If you're the owner, and someone says I'll pay you 50 dollars to let me run a tournament here, owner gets an estimate for attendance, says ok fair enough. However, come game day, the event hits twice as many expected, taking more time, electricity, and staff people to handle it. Now is that 50 dollars really fair? No, the amount the store makes from letting the event be held should reflect the time it takes and the people that show up to play.

i've never been to the d-pad, but from what i hear its really cool and i think it would be worth it. it'll be closer to the plp up north so they don't have to traver all the way down to gamelot. theres always traders planet as well, who by far has the coolest owner and i feel that he would take the least ammount of money from the pot. this guy understands the players point of view, so i trust him more over anybody else. gamelot is over rated because of the space. i would prefer quality over quantity.

BETTY: did you get another infraction betty?

el rey mosquito: i think that at this point everybody is RST lmao

Actually, since people seem to have forgotten, Gamelot runs 24 hours on the weekends. This means we can get anything done. There isn't a single other venue that I know with those hours.

Jose is right, Preacher is by far my favorite game store owner, but he stills does 50/50. (or 5 and 5 dollars). He makes up for it by handing out plenty of door prizes though.

D pad? I don't know how much they would charge. I'll contact them soon though.

Can we talk more about the tournament and less about the venue please?

First of all, why in the world must there be 10 neutrals? That makes selection of a initial character that much harder. And Brinstar and Delfino Plaza are NOT neutrals.

I'm not about to detail every one that you added to counterpicks, but here's the main thing: DeDeDe's chaingrab is the new waveshine: it carries a character across a stage, and you get finished off by a forward throw. That's why most stages with walls (like Onett) and walk offs (like Mario Circuit, Green Hill Zone) should be banned. It's just the same as Melee. Skyworld and Luigi Mansion are tech fests. The game takes long enough as it is. Skyworld also makes tether recovery impossible whens the platforms are destroyed. Though I guess I could say Skyworld is still debatable.

However, I think I should possibly add Port Town Aero Drive, Distant Planet and Pictochat as counterpicks. I'll think about it.

There aren't fastfallers anymore. That's the ONLY reason Brinstar wasn't neutral in Melee.

There are safe zones from the cars on PTAD. Don't get hit by them, you can see them coming up the track. It's a viable counterpick.

Give me a warrant as to why Delfino and Brinstar aren't neutral.

Because they're stupid.
I concur.

Simply put though, there really needs to be only 5 or 6 neutrals, and they should be the simplest stages without any natural hazards whatsoever. Lava included.

The cars on Port Town kill that low? Lame. I would think that should be banned. Can anyone tell me why I should or shouldn't allow Distant Planet or Pictochat? I don't agree with Norfair either, unless the lava in that stage really only comes every 4 minutes like I am told. Give me some feedback. The stages are going to be the biggest debate as far as rules go for Brawl.

Melee rules are just dandy, thankfully.

Oh and Bluezaft, I sure don't see any major Dallas tournaments coming up, so STFU. Here is what I am proposing for the pricing right now. I talked about it with forkgirl yesterday on AIM:

Each game will be treated as a different tournament. You would pay a 5 dollar venue fee for Brawl, or a 5 dollar venue fee for Melee. Singles and Doubles would both be 10 dollars for both Brawl and Melee.

A second matter I am proposing, at least for Brawl, is a higher 7 dollar venue fee UNLESS you provide a wii+game or a TV. I know wiis will be tough to gather up.

I shot off an e-mail to Gamelot, and I will get word back soon I hope.
