File Replacement Code
-by Phantom Wings

Phantom Wings has written a file replacement code that will allow you to load textures or any other files used by the game directly off an SD card. No more disk burning needed!

You can go here to get the code as well as his instructions on how to use it.

ASH v2.2 Automatic Smash Hack
-by Marc

Okay, heres something I think you might like. Thanks to Marc, gone are the days of long hexing and repeatedly running programs over and over to generate your custom textures.

With his now Automatic Smash Hack it's as simple two clicks of the mouse. Just copy the .pac into the ASH directory, run Step_1, make any changes you want, and then run Step_2. You've got a modified character file ready to be put on disk. Most programs need for the original hack are still needed (TPLx, SSBExtract, TexConv, and ntcompress), however they will all be called automatically so you never have to use any individually.

You can view his original post here (Spanish):
http://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_dale-color-a-tu-smash-bros_1157762

And you can download everything you'll need (minus SDK programs) here:
http://www.patriotmods.com/brawlhacks/tools.html

I'm also going to bring this post up to date soon once I get the chance. I've kinda let it slip lately.

Since this was originally posted, Ghosteo, Raganook, Skyos, and Cryos have really taken this hack to a whole new level and have formed an amazing team called Syntax Error. They are releasing new textures daily on eesyntaxerror.net

F.A.Q:

I want to make my own custom textures, how does this work?
The basic process involves using tools available such as SSBExtract to extract the texture files and edit them. They are then recompressed into Brawls special format using tools found in the Revolution SDK. I made a guide a while ago, but quite a few errors were found so I removed it. I will post it again after I make some changes.

Does this hack work on Wifi?
The game should run fine on wifi and you will see any texture hacks that are on your disk. However, the people online will just see a regular character. i don't recommend playing on wifi, but being a 360 owner has made me paranoid.

Can I add new textures to the game, or just replace existing old ones?
With everything I've done so for, only existing colors can be replaced. However, I believe that it may be possible to use a USB Gecko to load completely new textures into the game. I don't have a USB Gecko, so it's just a theory.

Can character models be changed in any way?
Short answer, no. Long answer, I don't know but it is extremely unlikely. So far no one has figured out Brawl's model data. As I mentioned before I want to try to swap a character model with another existing in the game. The odds of it actually working though are slim to none.

Is it possible for this to do any damage to my Wii?
No. The worst that could happen is that the Wii freezes when trying to use the hacked chaaracter if it was done incorrectly. It will be fine on reset.

Original textures

Here is a .rar file with all the character's default costumes (minus G&W). It may also be missing a few accessory texture like Peach's parasol:

How did you do this? USB Gecko or a modded wii and disc? Either way, try making a Shadow alt for Sonic to override his black costume!

It's a modified .pcs file on a burned disk. Extracting and changing the textures is easy, the only hard part was figuring out a way to get it back into the proper compression for the game to read. There is some distortion around the eyes when they have a Smash Ball that I still haven't figured out.

And a Shadow alt is a pretty good idea. I'll have to try that. Unfortunately my computer crashed while trying to capture a video and now wont turn back on, so it could be a few days.. :(

Can you explain the process to me? This seems very interesting, so I might try it.

So basuically you need a modded wii and dvd burner(Dual layer im assuming) and your good to go? or can use a Sd boot process?

I'm currently doing a little guide as to how this is done. Still not completely sure if I'll post it. In order to do this you'll need a SSBB ISO, a hex editor (I recommend Hex Editor Neo), a modded Wii, WiiScrubber 1.21 or later, SSBExtract, TPLx, an image editor, and a couple files from the Revolution SDK (there's the bad one). The entire process takes about three hours, no actual coding knowledge is necessary. If anyones still interested in knowing how it's done, say so and I'll post a guide.

It requires a modded Wii and a DVD burner, but the disk doesn't have to be dual layered (if it did, this would have cost me WAY too much money). The only thing on the second layer is SSE. Stay away from that and it'll run fine on any standard DVD.

DO THE MR. L COSTUME NOW.

That is all.
Well, it's in my plans, but my computer's down and probably won't be back for a few more days. If anyone wants, I could post the extracted texture files on here for people to edit, but right now I'm kind of stuck.

Okay, so someone posted this over on GameFAQs, and while reading that topic I got another idea. We currently don't really know anything about viewing or editing Brawl's model data. But what would happen if I took and existing model (like Ridley) and put it into a similar character file (like Charizard). Something else I'll have to test.

And why is it that whenever there's a new hack for Brawl, Pikachu's always the first one to try it on?

If you can pull of that Charizard conversion into Ridley, you will be a Smash Bros god. :chuckle: Imagine to what extent (should that work) the game could be modded... Sonic to actually look like Shadow (not just a color change), Lucas or Ness into Claus, Snake into Raiden...and so forth...

So you need the Wii to be modded in order to read the dvd, right?

That sucks, since I really don't want to risk screwing my Wii up. Is there a way to possibly load this using the Twilight Hack and a SD card?

I wouldn't get your hopes up. I'm not a programmer and I'm not a hacker. Best case scenario if it works, you have to play as Pokemon trainer or an alt color, and it's bound by Charizards moveset file so it can only have the same moves Charizard has. There are files in the game that could potentially be replaced to allow for new characters (at the expense of multi-man brawl and SSE).

So you need the Wii to be modded in order to read the dvd, right?

My knowledge of the Twilight Hack is limited, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to run it right now. However, I can say that the potential is there. It's basically a matter of if/when someone writes a program to use the Wii's USB ports to their full potential (2.0) and then someone writes an ISO loader.

Currently all the people who could figure out this kind of thing wont release it because of its tremendous potential for piracy. I'm not quite sure what would happen if you used an 4+ gig SD card and copied the game to it. I'm pretty sure that, as of right now anyway, the limit is 2GB, not enough to hold a game.

As for modding a Wii, if your main concern is bricking because of messing up soldering, they now make clips that allow modchips to be installed and easily removed with no soldering at all.

If we are just burning the game to a cd, then I would gladly get rid of these to make more characters. (Pichu, Dr. Mario, etc.)

They have 4+ gig SD cards, but I guess what you are saying is that the Wii currently won't read them.

I just don't want to run the risk of my game getting messed up, then having the warrenty ended because of modding. But right now it seems that I'll have to mod the wii, since the latest update ruined my chance of running the Twilight Hack on it.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Wait, what!? Oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap.... I haven't been keeping up with the latest on these kinds of things, but I've been avoiding updating for this reason. Well, I read up on it and the new update also blocks the trucha bug, which is required for this project to work, so even if you did mod your Wii you still wouldn't be able to run a modified disk.

However, on the bright side, if you already installed the homebrew channel, it does the same thing as the twilight hack and isn't blocked by the new update. Also, it seems that someone has already figured out how to get the twilight hack working again through regular means. Still, it isn't enough to run modified disks (at the moment).

Oh, and my computer should be fixed by friday, so I'll probably have something new by sunday.

EDIT: It seems a workaround has already been found to take care of both the tp fix and the trucha fix. Still reading up on it, I think it may require both a modchip, but I'm still a little confused. It isn't available publicly yet.

Actually, I don't think I have updated yet. Yay for me!

And when they do figure out how to run disks using Twilight Hack/Homebrew Channel, then I'll try it out. But the idea of opening my Wii up disturbs me for some reason.

Very nice. I'm interested in how its done, if your still willing to post a guide. Oh, and I was curious to know if something like the Twilight Hack can be used for something like this? Just was curious. Since I don't have TH but I haven't updated my Wii to 3.3 yet mainly cause I am afraid that I won't be able to play my imports with a Free Loader.

Well, I still don't have a computer and the one I'm using is on the verge of dying as well. I paid the idiots at the store $40 to tell me everything I already knew and they said they couldn't fix it. So I just ordered a new motherboard (the only thing that makes sense) and it just shipped monday and I wont get it til wednesday or thursday . Then I still have to change everything over and get it configured.

I'm going to upload some textures later (if this computer doesn't crash), and if anyone with photoshop experience could work on them it would be a great help, especially since I suck at it :urg:.

Texture hacks already? I'm impressed dude.
Thanks man. :) I'm thinking about ordering a usb gecko soon, but I'm still not sure. Could you give me a brief explanation of what exactly it allows you to do?

Awesome! Can't wait for Mr. L. You should try to make a maskless Meta Knight.
Hehe, thanks. Yeah, hopefully I'll be able to work more on it soon. As for a maskless Meta Knight, I don't think it's possible right now due to our inablity to do anything with model data.

EDIT: It has come to my attention there were quite a few errors in the guide so I removed the link. I'll repost it after I update it.

I would suggest installing the Homebrew Channel. It allows you to perform the same hack as the twilight hack and isn't blocked by 3.3. There is also an application called Gecko Region Free (1.5) that should still be able to load imports (and trucha disks) after 3.3. There are some stablity issues, and it's probably just best not to update, but I figure I should mention.

Dude, this is badass. So you always see pika like this when playing now?
Yep. :) Whenever I use that disk anyway. I usually just stick to my real disk though since it has everything. Not that I really miss the files lost on a DVD5.

Hey thanks for the guide! Do I really need the USB Geko for this to entirely work? Or was that just for the imports?

I would like to ask another question if you don't mind.

Is it also possible to edit other textures such as Mario's Fireball, Samus' Charge shot or Lucario's Aura Sphere? (Which I guess would be sprite textures..?)

Or change ROB's thrusters to look like they emit flames. :D

Textures of animations would be sick, though.

USB Gecko isn't needed. If you have the latest update (3.3) you will need a homebrew program for the Wii called Gecko Region Free to run the disk. It's free to download online and you launch it from the homebrew channel. If you don't have the homebrew channel, there is a new version of the twilight hack that works with 3.3 and will let you install it.

As for changing other thing, yes it is possible. I'm pretty sure they are stored in the FitCharacter.pac (no numbers) file in a characters folder. I haven't tested it, so I can't say for sure it will work, but extracting that file for Pikachu gave me the textures used for thunder, jolt, etc. It's not compressed, so you wouldn't have to do anything with ntcompress afterward.

Still, just because it has the files doesn't mean the game uses them. Every costume has a .pac and a .pcs file. The .pac is never actually used by the game and the .pcs file is just the .pac file compressed. The disk wastes a lot of space by doing this. There are a ton of files (not just for characters) that have unused copies taking up space for no reason.

Dude, this is awesome! I tried texture hacking in Melee with a friend, but wasn't able to. Got real close, but the textures were compressed in some weird format that we couldn't figure out.

That same friend of mine is in the area for the summer. Neither of us have modded wiis, but maybe we can help somehow... at the very least, I wouldn't mind editing textures if you passed them on to me. =)

OMG!! Your already a Smash celebrity for this announcement. If you have free time, experiment with Zelda for it's alway fun to mod female characters. And Zelda's graphic model is basically a gateway for alternate costumes that look like Nintendo female, humanoid representatives that didn't get into Brawl. I would love to see characters like Aisya, Captain Syrup, Micaiah, and Midna. Woohoo!!

Nice work there! I just have one question: are you able to preview the textures in your computer? if so then, can you extract and post Mewtwo and Roy's textures? It is to my knowledge that although their moveset and models don't exist, their textures are in the game disk.
Ok, those were two questions

Well, I've had it with this computer. I decided to scrap it and get a laptop. So my hands are still tied and I can't do anything. If anyone's interested I can post the modified character file to download.

Sure, any help would be great! :) Especially if you're good with photoshop (I completely suck with it). Yeah, figuring out a way around the compression was the hardest part. It took me about a month of working on it off and on. I'm interested in trying to insert custom music filesas well. I also want to try to make some of the SSE stages selectable.

When I try to use SSBExtract on this computer the program crashes, so I can't really access any of the textures. Maybe if someone else has the right tools they would be able to extract them for me.

I'm far from a celebrity. Maybe I've been saying a little too much about this. I have a lot of ideas but the chances of them working are extremely small. Zelda does offer possibilities as far as alt are concerned, but that's getting beyond my photoshop abilities. Like I say, if Wolf Pup or someone else can help with the texture files i could do the inserting without much trouble.

You can view texture files unwrapped on the computer, but you can't actually see what they would look like on the character. The only files that exist for the forbidden 7 are the effect files and even those have been completely stripped (they contain nothing but a header and zeros), so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to extract their data.

hmm, sorry. I have another question to ask ^_^; (seems you've been getting a lot of those..)

Would it be possible to boot up the textures without the Twilight Hack? Sine I haven't updated, would something like the Freeloader I have for imports work instead? Just curious.

I know photoshop pretty well, and m friend knows it even better. If you can either tell us how to get the textures and convert them into some usable format, or just send them over (in usable format), we can mess with them and send 'em back to you.

Feel free to PM/AIM/MSN/e-mail me any time. My email address is thewolfpup-at-gmail-dot-com

Well Wolf, I almost have the Brawl.iso currently. I'm going to follow the tutorial he gave me and see what I can do about ripping textures. If you want I can start sending you them once I have them. Unless you'd rather wait for Pharrox to reply :)

Yeah. If you haven't upgraded you can boot them right from the disk channel (as long as you have a modchip). The latest update disables the bug that allows that and also blocks freeloader.

Extracting the textures is actually really easy. Go here and download SSBExtract and TPLx. Then get either WiliScrubber 1.21 or Trucha Signer. Open the .iso in trucha signer and find the character's file (in the character's folder, any of the files ending in ##.pac) and extract it from the disk. Then drop it into SSBextract. It will out put at leas t 3 .brres files. Drop 001.brres into SSBExtract. Then use TPLx to extract all the TPL files.

Thanks for offering to help. Still, my hands are kinda tied for now. I can't even run SSBExtract on the computer I have now. You'll either have to do it yourself or have DracoKun send them to you. The most I could do right now is once the textures are converted back to .tpl, I could reinsert them into a .pac and compress it for Brawl to read (which is the hardest part). I have no DVD burner so I would have to send the files to someone able and willing to test it.

I do do have an account at AiB, but I rarely use it. If you want you can make a topic there and I'll try to check it frequently. If not I'll post an updated version of this topic there tomorrow.
