Diddy Kong: The Facts, Must Reads and Videos!

Okay, so we've seen a recurring trend of people coming on, wanting to know what Diddy Kong can and can't do/claiming that they have found something new, when in reality they haven't.

Therefore, I hope this thread will serve the purpose of addressing the aforementioned threads by directing them to the 'main' threads that have thus far served to address them.

An Overall VIEW over Diddy's playstyle and Moveset
Credit goes to saberhof
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=187879

In this thread, saberhof makes a point of analyzing Diddy Kong's moveset and popular playstyles. This is a good starting point for would be Diddy Kongs to get on track, learning how better Diddy Kong players maximize Diddy's potential.

I would reccomend it to any beginner.

A 'work in progress' project being undertaken by AlphaZealot. It is an overview of advanced Diddy Kong play. For anybody from the newcomer to the character, to the experienced Diddy main, it is an excellent read, offering Diddy mains an insight into his many ins and outs, and general advanced play strategies.

To discuss this, AlphaZealot also has a smash boards thread.

Me? Contributing something worth reading? Preposterous! All I'm good for is resource maintenance! -_-

However, the thread I've linked above is a post I made in regards to the dangers of becoming complacent in your Diddy Kong play style. I'd reccomend it to intermediate Diddy Kong players that have found their way, but are coming up against players that can read them well.

The Purpose of this ADS thread is to help the Diddy Kong community with Advanced Strategies. I have seen Fatalities character playing guide as well as other good ones, however they are like a basic introduction to the character mainly meant for beginners wanting to pick him up, while this is a much more in depth look into him. This is not suppose to replace those guides, rather this should be used alongside with them. Besides after seeing most of the Diddy threads and videos out there, I noticed that many of these techs/strategies have not been used or even realized...

Glide Tossing
- Credit goes to several people including Ikki and I.T.P for bringing it to light, as well as Jewdo for his short explanation and links within the following link to an analysis and distance list compiled by other players.
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=164597

To Quote Jewdo's summary:
- Glide Tossing
How to Perform: Initiate any roll while holding an item, then throw the item before the roll animation begins. You can use the C-stick to throw the item in any of the four cardinal directions instead of just pressing A for a forward throw.
Effect: Character slides in the direction of the would-be roll and tosses the item. Distance traveled differs based on character and several other factors.

Banana Cancelled Rocket Barrel Boost
Credit goes to kamekasu and his post:
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=172501

Now, Rocketbarrel-boost next to a banana. You need to be close enough that you don't trip, but the barrel is almost touching the banana. It will treat the banana as an attack and the barrel will fly off, but you land on the stage without falling. It's awesome mindgames. Not to mention that when you do this, the banana will fly off in your opponent's direction.
NOTE: The banana has to be under your opponent's control (Or anybody other yours), for it to work.

Banana Lock Infinite
Credit goes to AlphaZealot
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=178576

This thread describes a method of locking the opponent into an infinite using the bananas in tandem.

To quote AlphaZealot:
After you are hit by a banana, there are forced frames were you simply can't do anything. If you hit them with another banana in this window, then the process simply repeats.
In the testing against humans I've done I've all but 100% confirmed this as inescapable. The timing is HARD though, it may take a bit to figure out/get. It may also be character specific, I think the duration a character is vulnerable after being hit by a banana may vary from character to character.

---

Smash attacks whilst holding a banana
Credit goes to BrawlBro
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=176942

This thread describes how one would go about using smash attacks whilst using a banana.

To quote BrawlBro:
How to perform: when you pick up a banana hold down (a) or whatever button you use to pick it up. Hitting the C stick now will make diddy perform fsmash, instead of throwing the naner; if you continue to hold (a)

If you just hold (a) the fsmash will charge all the way before going. If you hit it then let go of (a) it will just do a normal fsmash. To be able to do continous fsmashes without throwing your banana you have to hit the c stick let go of (a) then hold down (a) again before the smash finishes.
To quote ESOJOSE
ets say you picked up a banana and forgot to hold A so what now? Well, you can use Diddys peanut gun and then quickly press and hold A. Then just tap the c stick to do diddy's forward smash.
It appears you can initiate this 'held state' of the banana/Item by holding the A button during the frame of an animation that during which Diddy would not be able to throw his banana/item.

Aerials whilst holding a banana
Credit goes to Xaile
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=177653

This thread on the other hand, describes a method of using an aerial in the air without throwing your banana. It also looks at different methods of using bananas in the air.

The first method is Xaile's own discovery:
After looking further into it, it seems that every time you perform the down-B animation (regardless of whether or not you actually pulled out a banana or not), you can perform an aerial rather than throwing the banana once the animation is over.
Xaile also notes on Izaw's method of bomb-catching with Link to create a similar (But faster) result.

As you approach the peak of your jump, press Z to drop the banana you have then immediately perform an aerial (C-stick works great). What happens is that your aerial attack picks up the banana you just dropped, performing the attack and ending with the banana in your hand. If done fast enough, you can hardly tell you dropped the banana at all (except for the sound effect of picking it back up).

Diddy Kong's ISJR List
Credit goes to Makkun
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=173119&highlight=isjr

'ISJR' stands for 'Infinite Second Jump Recovery'. It is a method of recovering your second jump repeatedly by ending an aerial on your second jump very close to the ground. The buffer physics of the game allow the player to cancel the ending frames of the attack into another jump without any of the lag between landing and jumping again.

Makkun's thread shows that all of Diddy's aerials (bar the Dair) can be fast falled to achieve this, making the timing a lot easier as well.

SJR Diddy Hump
Credit goes to DethSmasher
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=174972

'SJR' stands for 'Second Jump Recovery', and essentially is a method of recovering one's second jump after double jumping and ending an aerial attack very close to the ground. The difference between this and the 'ISJR' is that you cannot do it infinitely.

To quote DethSmasher:
ok, so i ddint know how to bring this to anyones atention, but after messing is ISJR some, i figured out that you can jump twioce, do a diddy hump close to the ground, then jump AGAIN. not incredibly game breaking but it is just another trick. just jump twice, then diddy hump close to the ground and after you can jump for a third time.

'Dribbling'
Credit goes to both N4N3RZ (Who was the first to bring this to the attention of the DIddy forums) and NinjaLink for discovering 'Single Dribbling' and providing us with valuable video resources.
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=181072

In this thread, NinjaLink discusses a number of techniques. the first being 'Dribbling'. In this video he demonstrates how to repeatedly glide toss across a stage using one banana, and then demonstrates alternating between two bananas.

U can go across the stage wih 1 banana if done properly. This is Dribble.

Double dribble is goin back and forth with 2 bananas. U can obviously see the potential here. This is what ppl in CH3 got hype over i guess.
It was my understanding that N4N3RZ was the first to discover you could glide toss between two bananas, but he never decided to put a name to it. Correct me if I am wrong though, and I'll change it.

---

'Banana Choke Chaingrab (BCC)'
Credit goes to NinjaLink
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=181072

The second technique demonstrated by NinjaLink in his Diddy tech playlist, he has devised a way to combine the banana peel with the release grab, creating a situation where the opponent will slip on a banana peel during the release animation of Diddy's grab, allowing Diddy to regrab them. This technique can continue for as long as the banana remains on the stage, and for as long as the stage lasts.

U can chaingrab a person across the stage with this technique. Being every character slides a different distance when released u have to space the banana and urself differently for each char.(luigi and wario are big examples)

'Monkey Flip Kick Cancel'
Credit goes to NinjaLink
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=181072

The third technique demonstrated in this thread demonstrates a method of cancelling the lag on Diddy Kong's monkey flip kick.

U can cancel the lag of the kick if timed properly. Its basically L-cancelling but u have to land with the airdodge and not the kick.
---

'Aerial Glide Toss and Airdodge to Glide Toss'
Credit goes to NinjaLink
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=181072

Continuing NinjaLink's impressive collection of video demonstrations, he has created a video showing the viewer how to use an air dodge to pick up a grounded banana, and Glide Toss upon grabbing the banana.
U can airdodge and glide toss upon landing, ALSO glide toss a banana already on the floor. Just hold down the airdodge button and follow up with the glide toss. For the banana already on the ground, Airdodge on top of it and do the same.
---

'P1's Chain Grab'
Credit goes to Player-1
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=187460

The best way to set this up is to get yourself about diddy's length away from the opponent, glide toss forward and Bthrow, the banana should be right behind you and you can do it again, the best way to keep this going is to make the banana land STRAIGHT behind you, other wise you'll have to dash attack to pick it up and it will knock them out of the combo. I kept the banana landing straight beind me 5 times on ganndonorf and wasn't able to do this.
I'd advise that you take the time to read the OP of Player-1's thread, as it contains much more detail.

'Peanut Gun Cancelling''
Credit goes to advent102 for detailed information in his 'Advanced Diddy Strategies' thread and to NinjaLink for providing us with a Video demonstration
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=5320324#post5320324

Basically, pressing a shield button whilst charging the neutral b 'Peanut Pop-gun' will cancel the charge. From this there are a multitude of options available to you:

advent102 said:
There are many ways to use the peanut gun cancel. One being spamming the peanuts until your opponent approaches you, in which you cancel the next peanut your going to shoot and follow up accordingly (usually with a thrown banana to stop the opponent in their tracks) Another use is approaching your opponent with a jump while charging a peanut, if they react by rolling or trying to jump then cancel the peanut gun and punish them accordingly. This tech is mainly used to mind game the opponent or to react quickly from spamming the peanut gun.
NinjaLink also demonstrates visually, some different applications:

'Monkey Flip B-Boosting''
Credit goes to NinjaLink
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=5320324#post5320324

'Un-gimpable Barrel Recovery''
Credit goes to NinjaLink for being the first to bring it to light.
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=5320324#post5320324

Usually when characters are hit into a wall whilst off the edge will get wall spiked. However, if Diddy is hit during his Up + B barrel charge (During the charging state), he will not spike into the wall, but ride along it with the aid of the knockback he receives.

I dont have a name yet but will think of one. U'll see me demonstrate what normally happens when diddy hits a wall. Of course its the same as any other character. He bounces off aka wall spike. BUT!!!! When diddy gets hit with his barrels out HE DOESNT BOUNCE OF THE WALL. If done properly U WILL NOT GET STAGE SPIKED WHILE GETTIN HIT.

'Pivot Dribbling''
Credit goes to Le_THieN and Hylian for investigating it and bringing forward their results
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=193445

(W)ith the newfound versatility of pivoting constantly bringing new things to the table in Brawl, in turns out that you can indeed pick up the banana immediately after a forward dribble by buffering a change of direction to turn around and face your banana and hitting the A-button to pick it up.

To break it down, it works like this:

* glide-toss forward
* push down on the C-stick to throw the banana at the ground
* as you're moving forward, buffer/hold the opposite direction
* push the A-button

The timing is not as fast as the reverse single dribble; there's a slight delay. There's a very small window of time for you to actually grab the banana right before you slide outside of its range.

Item Throw Cancelled, Air Dodge Cancelled Charge
Credit goes to me?
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=176999http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=207488

A method of cancelling Diddy's neutral B charge without it resulting in an airdodge, achieved by throwing a banana to cancel the air dodge animation. It should be noted that if you cancel the charge straight away, the air dodge doesn't even occur.

---

Instant Ground Throw
Credit goes to ChromePirate
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=207191

As the title explains, it's an offensive way to have a naner be thrown straight from the ground in either horizontal direction. Set L to attack, and go over a banana on the ground and SH airdodge with R and then quickly press a direction and L. What should happen is you will just perform a rising SH throw (smashed or tilted can be controlled by control stick pressure). You can use it as a surprise attack backwards, or as a straight-forward offensive throw straight from the ground. It's a good lagless way to throw a banana behind you or in front of you but does require spacing if you want it to hit.

Single Naner Locking
Credit goes to ChromePirate
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=207191

A method of banana locking with a single banana. It is best explained in the provided link and is one of the most recent experimentations undertaken by Diddy players thusfar. It can be used to infinitely lock opponents against walls, and theoretically could lock down opponents infinitely regardless, however it is reasonably difficult to do.

Projectiles that deploy the rocket barrels
Credit goes to ice_cream_man and kamekasu
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=176999

To quote Kamekasu's 'original thread' which is the Banana canceled Rocket Barrel Boost Thread above this.
You know that you can deploy your Rocketbarrel-boost by being hit by certain projectiles. This will make the barrels fly off and you will fall out of the air. This can also be performed on the ground. Here are a list of projectiles that deploy the Rocketbarrels (by ice_cream_man):

* Link - Down-B (Bomb), Over-B (Gale Boomerang)
* Samus - Neutral B (Charge Shot, while charged), Over-B (Missile and Homing Missile), Down-B (Bomb)
* Kirby - Up-B (Final Cutter)
* Peach - Down-B (Turnip)
* Pikachu - Neutral-B (Thunder Jolt), Down-B (Thunder)
* Zelda - Over-B (Din's Fire)
* Sheik - Neutral-B (Needle Storm), Over-B (Chain)
* Pit - Neutral-B (Palutena's Arrow, while charged)
* Falco - Down-B (Reflector/Shine)
* Ivysaur- Over-B (Razor Leaf, at close range)
* Charizard- Neutral-B (Flamethrower), Over-B (Rock Smash)
* Snake- Neutral-B (Hand Grenade), Down-B (C4), Over-B (Missile), D-Smash (Mine)
* Yoshi - Up-B (Egg Throw)
* Ice Climbers - Down-B (Blizzard)
* King Dedede - Over-B (Waddle Dee Throw), Over-B (Waddle Doo Electricity)
* Wolf - Neutral-B (Blaster)
* Lucario - Neutral-B (Aura Sphere, while charged)
* Ness - Neutral-B (PK Flash), Over-B (PK Fire), Up-B (PK Thunder)
* Sonic - Up-B (Spring Jump)
* Wario - Over-B (Wario Bike Parts, when thrown), Down-B (Wario Waft, while charged)
* Toon Link - Over-B (Boomerang), Down-B (Bomb)
* R.O.B. - Neutral-B (Robo Beam), Down-B (Gyro)
* Pikmin - Over-B (Pikmin Toss, Purple only)
* Lucas - Neutral-B (PK Freeze), Over-B (PK Fire), Up-B (PK Thunder)
Basically, the attacks listed will cause Diddy's rocket barrels to fly off on their own.

Rocket Barrel Boost Glitch

This appears to be the most common glitch/technique to be reposted. Quite simply, if you are hit and you jump + Up B at the same time you'll receive a momentum boost. When you Up B normally you usually fall slowly whilst charging, but this glitch will actually make you hover upwards whilst charging (The reverse effect can happen if you are hit downwards mind you).

There have also been claims that there is a way to do this without being hit, but I have yet to investigate this myself.

---

Diddy Kong Freeze Glitch
Credit goes to Dazwa and his post:
http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=178104

Basically, if Diddy's up-throw gets interrupted by something (I haven't pinned down the reason why certain attacks freeze Diddy while others don't), usually a projectile, Diddy will freeze in place. This isn't like Melee's Ice Climbers freeze glitch, as soon as you get tapped by any attack or forced into your falling animation, the glitch ends and you regain control of your character.

(Multiple Matches in a set)
Winner(Character) Vs. Loser(Character)

SMASH WHILE HOLDING A BANANA - Lets say you picked up a banana and forgot to hold A so what now? Well, you can use Diddys peanut gun and then quickly press and hold A. Then just tap the c stick to do diddy's forward smash. It's easiest when you slide your finger across the B button to the A button. Your opp. will think you just wanted to shoot him with the peanut and thats when you surprise him with the smash.

P.S. DIDDY RULES!!!!!

That's definitely an interesting tidbit.

Certainly all true.

z-dropping is covered within 'Aerials while holding a banana'. But I'll be sure to add it in the explanation here. I guess I'll do my own explanation of Glide Tossing and add it in. (But I think I'll wait til I get home, I just got to work lol)

EDIT:
I've updated it with a basic explanation of Glide Tossing, choosing to reference Jewdo and his magnificent listing of every Brawl AT known to man.

EDIT2:
Added AZ's MLG Article.
Darn Good read.

Very, Very nice guide there Vyse, and whoever else added information to it. Extremely helpful, I'll have to practise this for a bit, seems like it will help a ton!

Cheers,

Well I'm glad you found it helpful.
: ]

I do hope this gets a sticky, but I would never be so pompous as to actually ASK for it to be stickied.
: 3

In the mean time, readers should bump this topic to keep it 'first paged'.

At the very least, people are benefiting from this, and I'm happy for that.

EDIT: Also, updated.

EDIT2:
@Triss: plz dun spam kthnx and gb2 olimar. Last time I show my crew anything over MSN -_-
@Yokai: And I find lucario's hitboxes to be utterly strange.

Added theOnejanitor's guide to throws.

Also adding more videos, and changing the 'N4N3RZ section' into a general video section.

@Player-1: No worries man, I think anybody who is willing to put in the time to create a combo vid should be listed.

UPDATED: I added NinjaLink's 3 techniques and videos, all of which are pretty interesting, and definitely worth a look.

Also, thanks to the mod that decided to sticky this >.<

I did the double dribble for months now. Im just against puttin my stuff online but im deciding to be nice. I wanna kno when N4N3RZ dicovered this. I'm not a person to copy or contribute much but ppl say i should do otherwise.......oh well.

Edit: There is a method to the barrels btw. It mostly goes by how much the barrels are charged. Or maybe im wrong. It seems that way to me. Imma do some testing.

I've given you credit where it's due. I don't really think it's necessary to be nitpicky, but you might want to ask N4N3RZ over PM's and sort it out with him.

I'll just credit both of you as pioneers of the technique. Does that sound fair?

When I said call it 'The true Windmill of Fury' I meant that as a reference to an infamous SSBM Samus technique called 'The windmill of fury'. Basically it was the same thing, dash attacking backwards and forwards.

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=1789186#post1789186

It was a joke technique made up by Cra$hman, though some people thought he was being serious, which made it all the more hilarious.

So yeah, it's up to you whether you want to hold onto that name or not.

man the replay section is not the best compared to other character guides, im not saying in quality ( I havent gotten around to watching yet) but definitly in quantity.

If I send someone replays from my wii can they put them up in here? I lack the equipment.

EDIT: did some watching, nanerz has a very nice diddy :)

Mmm, I realise that it's lacking, but only because N4N3RZ is really the standard.
You have a good point though. If people can reccomend good Diddy videos to be added, I'll do so.

SINGLE DRIBBLE IN DOUBLE PATTERN. it's on my thread about 13 diddy techniques or whatever. you can basically turn around and glide toss down at the same time... allowing you to double dribble with one banana.

I thought this has been stated already. I already perform this in tourneys
