Needs more falcon punch

I think we should have a rating system. Even just a 1.0 to 10.0 scale. That way we can also finally get some "hall of honor" marth videos that are epic enough to show people a GOOD marth in play.

Well ankoku, your marth looks pretty solid for the most part. I wish you would have had a video that was against a better player/character/both, whichever it may be. Anyway, I saw a complete lack of DS OoS. There were a few times Yoshi was right on top of your shield and you didn't really do anything.

:07 - I probably would have just jabbed here.. maybe grabbed, yoshi got inside your sword pretty fast as you both dodged to approach, dtilt is ok.. but that takes a total of 10 frames (i think) if you add the crouching animation compared to the 4 frames of a simple jab.

:16 - you landed the first hit nair, yoshi was in a perfect position for a reverse dolphin slash or something of the like

:32 - got a little ahead of yourself and just threw your sword out there, yoshi punishes. He was going to land right on your shield with a bair, which would be a perfect DS OoS to reset the situation with him in a bad spot

:58 - don't know if you were still after-stock messing around here or what, but you put yourself in a bad position right above Yoshi

2:05 - you grabbed him but then threw him back to the middle of the stage, put him in a bad position and throw him back out

2:22 - not really worth mentioning, as you are dominating this match and probably just fooling around with this dair which killed you.. right?

2:36 - Perfect DS OoS opportunity. I'd suggest to work on your ledge traps a little more. I understand Yoshi is tough because of his egg spam, but once he double jumps back up (that's what he usually did), you should be able to easily capitalize. Most of the time you'd try some fancy turn around up air ****, keep it simple.

Your use of dtilt is good, like at 2:40 you forced his reaction to roll away and punished with dancing blade.

There really isn't much for me to say. Your marth is solid and you were clearly better than your opponent, which makes it hard to critique.

While playing safe isn't as good as playing smart at the higher levels, everyone has a tendency to overrate their own "mindgames" as somehow being able to compensate for where they're lacking.

eh I've played DSF in melee and brawl and... I do much better in melee. And I've been playing both about the same time. I'm sure you'll even agree that a lack of fast spacing leads to less mindgames in it's purest form.

edit: and playing smart includes playing safe... but I know what you mean.

And people that know me personally know I never overrate myself. I just say how it is.

But separate thread have always served that purpose, are you saying this thread is suppose to change anything other than the fact that all videos should belong here now?

Really I am only contemplating on the fate of this thread since I've never really seen individual threads be an issue, so the use of this may lead to more confusion, especially if in technicalities like one user forgot to quote or direct to the user in question. The last thing I want to hear is that I rolled too much and tried to do a Ken Combo, in Brawl.

Like I said, it's not necessary, but I can deal with it.

Just wing it. Go with the flow.

We like telling Marth's that they need to shield and short hop. We really do.

We truly take pride in our ability to see deep within the player's game strategy and pinpoint such issues about shielding and jumping.

People post videos, we Marth's who feel we are able to critique give critique.

It's not too much of an issue.

It's not like a new topic is being made several times daily about 'rate my marth' at the moment so things getting "lost" do not seem likely.

And Steel's "system" of archiving the video with the critique given is a smart idea too.

Hi JtM

For the most sake I'll commend you for knowing the basics well, basic spacing, basic (positive) approach, etc.

Critiques:
Gimping D3 isn't easy once he's done his up b, it's easier to punish on his way down on the stage than going after him.

You have the knack of charging up your smashes. I would say this is not a very smart idea, for any character in smash. The reason you're doing this though is obviously because it's wifi and it has been recorded after it being saved, right? Try to get us some non-wifi matches. I dont know how bad the lag really was, but if you're just charging smashes hoping they'll hit in the confusion - try to not let it become habit.

Other issues:
Other use of fsmash - Marth's fsmash is best kept fresh, if its kept fresh even if not tippered it can kill opponents around the 130% mark, otherwise it's a lot 'harder'.
Not knowing the result of your or your opponent's actions... Your enemy has made a move with a certain trajectory/motion yet you respond to it naively. Work on that.

Hugest issue of all though:
No dancing blade.
I don't think I spotted dancing blade once in that video. I guess this could be the lag too, but for everytime you used fsmash to 'punish' or rack up damage, you should use dancing blade instead. Dancing Blade is -safer-, similar damage, comes out faster, etc.

Otherwise nicish Marth, it would be better without the wifi and maybe a better opponent though. Work on the dancing blade, reduction of fsmash 'spam' and once you have that down pat work on Dolphin Slash out of shield

No DB is unacceptable, as Shaya said. Fsmash is best fresh, you should not use it that much. Nice job countering D3's Up-b, and nice basics. Don't charge up smashes, it makes them WAY to easy to avoid. Nice Marth, just improve on what Shaya and I said.

Solid and shaya hit the biggest point of my concern. But I'll make it easier for you. 90% of the time that you did fsmash as a punisher, just replace it with dancing blade. All you have to do in future matches is think, am I going to tipper this fsmash or at least kill him with an untipped one? If the answer is yes, get the **** stock from him. If it's no, build up damage using dancing blade and wait for the next opportunity to kill one his damage is high enough.

I'm not going to say much more past that since this was wifi so I can't blame you for occassionally not attacking when you had the chance, etc. =]

It was a good marth though.

Thanks for the advice. The only problem is that no one I know in my area plays Brawl(Everyone in my neighborhood is at least 40). I'll try to work one on using DB as a punisher rather than Fsmash. The lag wasnt horrible, but it wasnt good either, the usmashes are force of habit. Is it really that obvious it was a wi-fi match?
