Average Tournament Ranking List:

Abstract

This is not Ankoku's ranking list. Unfortunately, while the current tournament rankings list does provide useful information, it doesn't account for popularity. For that reason, rather then simply taking total points, I'm taking a more statistically valid approach and measure a characters ability to take tournaments, rather then the total centralization caused by each character's existence.

Methodology

This will ultimately function based on tournament placing, however to be able to properly average it, some things needed to be done.

I'm gonna need at least one main of each character who is at the top of the character's metagame (or close enough to judge) from each region to constitute the sample. Only tournament results from those players will be followed.

Tournaments will be required to use pools that eliminate into brackets, events that are sufficiently large for that to occur will be considered sufficient to be directly comparable to other similar events in the region in terms of providing a sufficent spread of match-ups. Tournaments that do not meet this criteria will not be considered!

Basically, I'll total all the scores of all the participants of a given character in a given region, then average those for just a final character value, and that'll make it to the final list.

The list will cover the last 4 months, and the current list and the last two will be on the thread.

I'd ask that participants submit all tournaments that they participated in that fit the criteria, but outside people submitting the information is fine.

Scores will be 20 for first, 16 for second, 12 for third, 8 for forth, 4 for top 9, and 1 for top 17. However, since the tournaments are considered comparable, there will be no value changing based on number of participants.

The List

Doesn't exist yet... forthcoming.

Participants

Ok, basically I need people for this right now, as I said, at least 1 per region per character, more is better. As close to the top of the character's metagame as possible.

Ankoku - For assisting with the brainstorming on the topic and generally helping make this project a reality (hopefully).

Nestec - Sort of spurred the project.

What I need from you guys

Participants really, I need recommendations for participants, since I'm not personally up on every region, some knowledge of the respected mains from areas that I'm not familar with would be very helpful.

Also, help from more respected smashboards users vetting possible participants would be helpful.

Thanks for the read, happy brawling!

eh... this is really biased against other countries (like australia) which very rarely have enough entrants to warrant pools :(

and ankokus list never pretended to be a viability list which should consider popularity, it was a completely unbiased representation of tourney results. idk what youre trying to acheive here, a character viability list or something?

I understood that it would limit the number of tournaments that would actually be usable, but in the interests of accuracy, all tournaments had to be comparable.

Basically, this list is intended to rate the average tournament ranking that a character will receive at the top of the metagame.

In other words, it unbiased, but it's intended to actually be useful in discussing tier placement, unlike Anoku's. Basically, it'd be useful information, and we need some statistically valid method to obtain it. We can't do random testing, so matching will have to suffice.

I'm not sure why it's beneficial to only follow one player's (or very few players') tournament placing. Also, the requirements for tournaments to be considered... won't this eliminate a lot of data right off the bat? I mean in a bad way; will you even have enough data to draw a reasonable conclusion?

Now, I haven't crunched any numbers myself... obviously... but couldn't it work if you looked at all tournament data, but discarded the current point-based ranking system?

Europe is difficult to track.
I don't see how... All the tournaments that are big enough to have pools are in the Europe Tournament forum. Super Lion 4, Yuna's gig, etc.

If difficult to track means you have to click more to reach the respective subforum I agree, tyhe decision to structure the eruopean forum like that was... fairly poor.

Actually, I'm deciding whether I wanna drop Europe period, as well as Australia and Canada for simply being to large (and therefore having too many different tournament scene for the players to be comparable), but difficulty in tracking was also an issue.

Haven't decided yet.

Unfortunately no, two reasons.

1. If we just divided entrants by total placing, the result is that instead of popularity being a positive, it'd be a negative, because scrub MKs would more then balance out good MK placings for example. Furthermore, we'll following the top of the metagame, so most players simply aren't relevant.

2. Ankoku already had trouble getting even the top 8 submitted, all entrants? Not gonna happen.

down here you are gonna be hard pressed to find Cfalcs making top 8. What are you going to do with top mains that don't place?

"A Taste of Buffalo" is the largest upcoming tourney in WNY were expecting those people from the surrounding areas of Rochester and Buffalo to come, and we may even attract the attention of Niagara and Toronto players as WNY events have in the past

Understand I'm doing this by region, aka, Atlantic North, Atlantic South, etc, not by state. If you're suggesting somebody from Western New York, that means that you're suggesting them for Atlantic North reps, just something to consider.

In your list of regions, you have no midwest. TX would fall under midwest, and the scene there is pretty stacked.

Anyways, this thread is a bit confusing for me, but I'll try and help. We're supposed to give the top players of a character, correct?

Link:
midwest - Legan
atlantic north - KirinBlaze (Mario main but, best EC Link regardless atm)
pacific west - Deva

ZSS:
atlantic north - Snakeee, Dazwa
pacific west - FadedImage, Warpstatus, Claw
atlantic south - Nick Riddle

DK:
I think Bum is atlantic north

TL:
atlantic north - Jash

Pika:
midwest - Anther, Stealth Raptor
atlantic south - ESAM

Ike:
midwest - Kirk

MK:
pacific west - DSF
atlantic north - duh
midwest - Dojo I think

Samus:
midwest - Xyro

Diddy:
atlantic south - GameDragonX

Peach:
pacific west - Praxis
I know of other top players, but not their location. Kadaj, Pierce and mikeHAZE for Marth, Renegade for Ike, Shadowrob for ROB, Bigfoot for DK, Reflex for PT, Tudor for Samus, etc.

Really? I dunno, everyone I've talked to usually says TX is midwest. *shrug*

Guess I was wrong.

Still though, midwest should be a region, should it not? What are Anther and Lain to do otherwise? lol

Wow, epic fail on my part.

*edits OP*

I was sure I had it there.

Lol, yea, in Atlantic North we just play MK.

Ignore the Marth Icon.

J/k, it's fixed, just now realized what you meant, when I found out that midwest disappeared.

Yea, Texas is definitely Southwest, I can't think of a state that's MORE southwest actually.

I'm probably the best Ness in Canada. There's a couple others who may be close but one doesn't play anymore and one doesn't actually main Ness. I'll be glad to submit whatever data I can to this.

Other 'bests' in Canada:
MK: KingAce
Snake: Ally
Wario: Nickcam, JL (not sure)
Falco: Minus
Diddy: Doc
ICs: Ambrose
Ganon: Koskinator
Lucario: Chaotic
Dedede: Probably Mikey7
Peach: NikoK
TL: Either Pho or Distructo (Distructo rarely makes it out to tourneys though)
Yoshi: Eleftarios
Kirby: Percon
Lucas: Steb
ROB: HolyNightmare

Not sure on any others at the moment.

That's all I can think of as of now. As said, this list is far from being complete, but it's all I know of. Which kinda surprises me that I know of so many. xD

EDIT:
Also... I really really doubt you will find players for Bowser or other extremely unpopular characters in every region. <.<

Edit 2: Also, I would add myself to Bowser, but I don't play him anymore, so yea... lol

That's why nobody's on the list yet, I'm getting a committee of people together to vet possibilities.

Understand that just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean that they're not fair additions, BUT we better be able to find enough evidence of their ability, otherwise they're not making the list.

Also note that the main criteria is "top of the character's metagame" or close, because honestly a number of low tier players might never or rarely get placed because the character is bad, I'd prefer to account for that fact.

Could that MAYBE be because they're... well... European? I doubt you will know European players.

I always assumed southwest was only Arizona and New Mexico. My bad, lol

So...the Texans I mentioned, they aren't midwest. lol

I suppose you can put Izaw for Link in Europe.

I'm 100% positive about the players I mentioned for Link and ZSS at least. Those are the top players.
