They are metalcore technically, but BTBAM are untouchable. Every member are master musicians and they one of the most consistently technical, on-point precise bands out there. Not to mention, they have such a wide array of styles. They can play anything.

Hmm, well for me, I really prefer the classic stuff like The New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Thrash. My favorite band of all time is of course Metallica though I don't limit myself in music.

Sonata Arctica is pretty light for metal but it's all I can claim to be a fan of in said genre. More than just music to me, in fact.

Sunn O))) is probably the least metal band I've ever tried to listen to. I can't believe they are considered metal at all. I guess all you have to do is dress up in hoods and turn the bass knob on your amp all the way up. And no I don't think droning guitar distortion at 40 bpm is very brutal or heavy at all.

Metallica are a bunch of douches and most of their songs are really outdated (IMO). I'm also not really a fan of classic metal in general, though there are exceptions. I love power/fantasy metal like Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. I also like early death metal like Death...But mostly, the stuff is too tame for me :/.

Here are some other modern bands that are pushing the envelope and actually doing something different and interesting with the genre. You might not like if you don't like experimentation, or things that aren't generic.

HORSE the band. Synth driven music. They also use an actual Gameboy to create samples:

Rolo Tomassi. This is one of the weirdest bands I've listened to. They're kind of similar to HORSE but a lot more abstract. I'm not even sure what you call this type of music:

Dillinger Escape Plan. I'll be honest, I only just started listening to them after seeing them live. SEE THEM LIVE EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC. Crazy as hell.

Metallica's first four albums were incredible. After that, it went to pretty good, then to meh, to terrible, to pretty good again with DM.

80's thrash metal is the ultimate metal in my opinion. Megadeth and Testament's early stuff is simply mind-blowing from a musician's standpoint. But I also love Black Sabbath stuff. "The Mob Rules" is amazing, and I'm not just saying that because I like Maximum Carnage.

As for newer stuff. Dream Theater is currently my favorite band, but I've heard there are better prog bands, so that might not be the end of it.
