WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- BrawlBox (Smash Workshop General > BrawlBox v0.64 is the current one, download is at the bottom of the first post)
- Audacity (For volume fixes, if you don't care about volume, Goldwave works for looping too, but this tutorial uses Audacity)
- The value of the song you wanna replace to put it in the game (the track list can be found at the bottom of the OP)
- A mp3 of the song you want in Brawl (there's several great online Youtube->mp3 converters, I recommend clipconverter.cc)

FOLLOW YOUR SONG IN ANOTHER PROGRAM WHILE LOOPING IN BRAWLBOX, it helps pick out loop points and see where similar points in the song are located

1. Open up the song you wish to convert on Audacity (or you can just drag and drop the mp3 into Audacity)

2. Go to Edit > Select All (Or press Ctrl A)

3. Effect > Equalization.

[collapse=picture guide]
[/collapse]

Make it look like this (doesn't have to be exact).

HOLD ON A SEC! Test the song RIGHT AFTER you Equalize to make sure it sounds loud but not crackly. If it sounds crackly, reopen the mp3 and then go to Effect > Normalize, then Effect > Amplify. That'll fix the crackly noise, although it will be a little quieter in-game

[collapse=If it's still not loud enough]
[/collapse]

4. Once your song sounds good, export it as a .wav file (File > Export Entire Project as WAV)

5. Now, look for points that look similar in Audacity, they'll be your loop points

6. Mark the approximate time in the song (note: if you want exact values on the last two steps, use Goldwave, PM me on how to get it free, good BRSTM's take some time)

7. Now, open up BrawlBox but DON'T CLOSE AUDACITY, it helps for reference in Step 11

8. File > New > BRSTM Audio Stream

9. Find your song, wherever you saved it

10. It'll come up in a seperate window with the total time of the song.

11. Now, listen for 2 points in the song where either it sounds similar or there's a repeat of a part played earlier (most game songs have the latter)
NOTE that not all songs loop, if that's the case, just loop the whole thing! :laugh:

12. Fiddle around with the loop start and end points to get a SEAMLESS loop (when the song sounds continuous without a break, you'll know when you have done that)

[collapse=picture guide]
[/collapse]

For example, I chose Guile's Theme Stage to loop at 01:12.35 (red bar) and then start again from 00:06.63 (yellow bar).

[collapse=picture guide]
[/collapse]

13. Once it's looped to your liking, click Okay and it'll convert the song

14. Go to File > Save As brstm

[collapse=picture guide]
[/collapse]

15. Go to (whatever drive your SD is) /private/app/RSB_(E for US, P for Pal, J for Japan)/pf/sound/strm

16. Save it as the value of the song you wanna replace

17. Put the SD card in your Wii and you've just made your own BRSTM! Congratulations!

That's the guide, I'll put up some more visual aids at some point, but it's still pretty good. Ask any questions you may have, if you do something that makes them sound better, I'll add/change stuff. Thanks for viewing! Hope this helped you out!

I'd like to get some sort of feedback on the tutorial...if it helped, how to improve it, etc. If you do something that makes the BRSTM sound better, I'll add it in to the OP. Please do so. I wanna make this the best tutorial on BRSTM Making on the web

I'm having a problem. Why do some songs in BrawlBox show up with a sample number of 26? The WAVs work perfectly fine themselves.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out how to loop in BCSM.

Pardon the bump, but this thread really could use some more attention, and it's noob-friendly :laugh: maybe a sticky? No, that's asking for too much

Doesn't Brawlbox already convert .wav in to .brstm?
I always thought it was easier just to loop it using another program then use brawlbox.

I must be missing something.

Either way good job on this.

Interesting i tried it in brawlbox it didn't recognize it for some reason Hmm.... i wonder if brawlbox makes sure the sample is dividable by 14336

@terell24, you probably clipped the song, making it sound static-y throughout. Easy fix
1. Youtube megaman boss music psx
2. dirpy.com to convert to mp3
3. Now use the guide, should fix problems. If it's static-y after you equalize, then undo that, normalize, then amplify

Did you play it in Brawlbox after you converted? That's the easiest way to check if you did it correctly

So I took Turning Terrors by AeroZ on OC Remixes, using Garage Band I stuck the intro on the end so that it fades into itself nicely, exported it to iTunes and saved it as a wav, then imported that into BrawlBox and made it loop, and finally saved it as a brstm. It works fine in BrawlBox. It's quieter than the original but about the same volume as the brstms from Brawl. When I load it in the actual game it works for about 10 seconds then I get static.

Equalized it in audacity and that fixed it somehow.

Okay nevermind. A couple minutes into the song it goes static again, then back to normal for a few seconds, then static...

Formatting the SD helped a bit but there's still occasional static and the song seems to get off time.

I think it does. I was working on making a song loop but it wasn't quite working out in the preview but when when I shifted both the start and end points so that the start was divisible by 14336 it worked all of the sudden (the difference in the number of samples between the start and end never changed).

BTW, the rule that loop points must begin on a multiple of 14336 is missing from the first post...

That doesn't apply to BBox, which is why it isn't in the OP. If that applied, the first loop point would have to be 14336, yet you can have loops of only a couple hundred/thousand

Clipping means that the waveform gets deformed at the both the bottom and top peaks because it reaches the maximum. This causes them to get flattened out, resulting in a terrible sound. Try not to make it as loud.

That might explain the problem when I equalized it, but before I did so it was much worse. Both before and after, they sounded fine on my computer.

That doesn't apply to BBox
Wrong. Dead wrong. Don't make a guide if you don't know what you're talking about, especially when your misinformation is going to result in imperfect work.

The 14336 rule is because of the way the game reads brstms. No brstm maker can get around it.

Edit: I think Brawlbox might automatically adjust non-compliant loop points, so this isn't as bad as it could be.

So, it fixes it, which means it doesn't apply to it like, say, Dant's BCSM-GUI, where the loop points you set HAVE to be divisible by 14336, or it doesn't loop properly. That's what I meant. You can loop BRSTM's in Brawlbox without following that rule no problem. Hey, it's not the best guide, but that's how I do mine.

My problem is that the volume of my BRSTM's are WAYYY too low in game. Like when I listen to them in mono on my computer its screaming loud, but when I run the same file on Brawl, I can barley hear it. I'm using Goldwave, what am I doing wrong?

Hey darksamus, can you take a screenshot of the full Audacity window, because I don't think I'm getting the equalization settings right. Also where is the convert to Brstm button in Brawlbox?
