Character Rankings List *UPDATED 6/29/10*

If you want to contribute tournament results, please provide the following:
MAKE SURE IT WAS AT LEAST 13 PEOPLE IN THE TOURNAMENT
Number of entrants
Entry fee
Where it was (what state it was in, or something)
Top 8, with character main for each of the top 8
Link to tournament page or results page


Using Ankoku's method:
The math behind the list is as follows:
Base values are
1 for top eight
4 for top four
7 for second
10 for first

Base values are then multiplied by number of entrants and entry fee, then divided by 160. This helps account for larger tournaments being more relevant than smaller ones. If two characters are listed, both gain half the points. On that note, PLEASE ONLY PROVIDE MAINS. I don't care if you randomly picked Pichu for a random game in your first round if you spent the rest of the tournament as Fox.

Lots of thanks to the TOs and players that have given me results. I have a good number of tournaments in the calculations already. I sent PMs to the TOs of tournaments where there was no characters listed and I didn't know all of the players. Only a few TOs have replied back so far and I sent out a dozen or so PMs.

I'm going to put a list of tournaments on the first post, and if you attended the tournament or know for certain which characters the top 8 used, please respond back with their characters and *please include the result link*.

It was a pain in the ***, but worth it. Thanks to you and all the other TOs and players who have replied to my PMs and texts and IMs.


To anyone that reads this: I know many TOs and tournaments (especially many repeating biweeklies or monthlies) don't post their results in the tournament results forum (i know my tournament series doesn't). If you have the time to copy paste some information for me (it takes only about a minute) please send me a link to the tournament results page (if its inside a large thread, click the number on the top right corner and send that link) in either a PM or a reply to this thread. If thats all you do, I can go from there getting the information, but ideally make sure that the post (and/or your post) includes:

1) The date of the tournament
2) Link to the results
3) Number of entrants
4) Entree Fee
5) Characters for top 8 players

I lol'd at the somehow you won tier.

What i find most fascinating is that when you remove mango's results from the data, falco and puff drop ~500 points each (putting them around falcon/marth level), but fox doesn't change at all.

Without armada's data peach drops to around 150 points (she was below ganon and samus before i got to the genesis and pound4 results)

The absolute worst is peach hasn't won a single tournament (of any size) in the past year.

I was wondering when someone would step up and make a new tier list character rankings list. Good stuff Joe.

And hurray PAL version for making Peach and Sheik look like decent characters.

LOL nah they're good characters. But it's pretty crazy how almost nobody in America uses them.

So we've got the old tier list, the match-up chart, tournament results, character rankings list, and the wave of Jigglypuffs storming the Melee world, while Marth and Sheik (save Amsah) are slowly disappearing.

We really need a new tier list.

On-topic though, this looks great.

I would really definitely absolutely not call this a tier list. I use the term "tier" in my categories referring to the point groupings not to the overall goodness of a character.

Easy things that prove this isn't an accurate representation of character's potentials:

Samus above ICs
Falcon above Marth, Peach and Sheik
Puff above Marth, Peach and Sheik
Bowser above the characters that didn't get played

What this ranking list is, is simply a comparison of tournament placement (factoring character popularity and tier position) alongside the size of the tournaments that the placing happened.

If you want to see what characters are the best in the game, you're in the wrong spot.

If you're curious about which characters tend to place higher at tournaments, you have found a starting point.


edit- the puff points are ALL mango and hbox, save for like 20 or 30 points darc got from small-ish tournaments on the EC

edit2- on a side note, im considering changing "Still Last! Tier" to "Always Last In Our <3's Tier"

Yeah there are some relations, but i don't want people to view this as a secondary tier list as many people do for ankoku's character rankings list in the brawl community. Its a ranking of how well characters have done in tournaments, which can better be described as a rating of the character's player base more-so than the character itself.

However, I take it from the "0 wins" next to Peach/Armada that European tournaments were excluded? Just curious - was it intentional that you didn't include them (since it was PAL perhaps) or was it just due to lack of easily accessible data on those tournaments?

As stated in the first post, I only took tournaments from the US and Canada.


Thanks a looot to everyone who has sent me tournament data. I'm semi-backed up right now, but will probably add all of these tomorrow (today now, i guess) or sometime else during the week. I haven't updated the first post with all of the tournament data people have sent me since i first updated it, mostly because it would be a pain to update it after every tournament someone sent me. Once I get caught up on all of these tournaments, i'll update the list. After that, i'll probably update the list once a month or so to include the results of the recent tournaments.

Sounds good, but I'd use out of country results as well as long as they are well documented I don't see why not.

Oh and a md/va tournament from this past saturday.

Well i didn't want to use european results because the game and community is different. Its hard enough trying to understand what these numbers say about the american scene without melding it together with the european scene and the japanese scene and the brazilian scene ect. I decided to include the canadian scene because they have free healthcare and i was hoping they would share if i was nice they are close and attended tournaments here often.

Yea the US and Canada historically have had very similar meta-games in nearly every competitive video game.

this is dumb, I agree with m2k for once.

this isn't a list saying who is the best, but rather who places better at tourneys. Shiek isn't that high because not many people play her, compared to falcon where every other mother ****er plays him, and everyone else tries to.

and idk if m2k was saying this is dumb, I think he just finds it funny that a character that has no amazing matchups and can easily be taken advantage of places better than a character who has so many amazing matchups, and almost no bad ones.

that doesn't make it dumb. this is a factual representation of who wins with who at tourneys. if sheik is lower than falcon, it's because falcons win in tourney more than sheiks.

or, silent spectre, hax, darkrain and scar **** up the results and make falcon seem better than he is

Voodoo was Peach in pretty much every match this tournament. I'd put Vanz as Peach and Tec0 as Fox from what I saw, if you had to choose one character.

I can accept multiple characters, and i think for the sake of fairness i should accept any character that the player used and won a game with. For example, my friend wants to boost yoshi's points by using yoshi in tournament then placing top8. I told him he has to at least win with yoshi and not lose game1 with yoshi then win game2 and 3 with falcon/fox/sheik. If the player went falcon the whole tournament except 1 set where he went fox to beat a sheik, then i would want falcon/fox as their character.

Hmm... I feel like that would corrupt the meaning of the results though? What if a strong player played against someone he knew he was certain to beat in the first round so he decided to go Pichu for fun? That wouldn't say anything about how tournament viable the character is. Maybe you should go with (a) a weighted average based on the proportion that player uses the characters or (b) for the sake of simplicity just pick the character he used in the furthest round of the tournament he advanced to? (If he used 2 characters in the final round give them equal weight. I.e., if their placing earned 4 pts, credit each character with 2 for the rankings)

Just a thought.
