Greetings, and Welcome to the Yoshi Video "Critique" Thread. :yoshi2:

Hopefully this can keep this Yoshi forum well organized on all of the videos and keep them all in an organized area for easy access on "multiple players" :)

The purpose of this thread is to post Your Video(s) and us "reviewers" will help/analyze/critique and even give suggestions on what you can do to improve..The following:

Leffen
Nogzor's
Mind Trick
V3ctorMan

are simple examples of who would be analyzing your videos... And of course anyone with knowledge/ideas etc... don't hesitate to post your two cents on this topic as well, as all advice is welcomed...

For the time being, the forum is a little stale, and doesn't receive too much attention but hopefully this will organize the forum a little and hopefully even expand us and make us grow larger...

Here's an easy way to post... Introduction > Simply state your "handle"(Tag), post your vid(s) and any comments you have to add... and I "promise" you I will at least have replied to you in a timely manner (24 hours is the goal) and of course, anyone else willing to share their thoughts as well. ;)

Example: Greetings I'm V3ctorMan, and I'd like you all to critique some matches I have against Pikachu player Axe, any advice for me?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awK_WdXj12g

or Axe (Pikachu) vs V3ctorMan (Yoshi) -(URL here)
whichever is easier for you! :psycho:

I'm confident that all of us can give above average advice, as I'm sure none of us would intentionally give bad advice...:) I understand there may be agreements/disagreements with certain scenarios, but that's something we can all share together and expand our ideas. :bee:

In the future I will try to archive the video(s) in order of apperance just in case, some new members show, or would even like to help a player, they might not have gotten the chance to.. Hopefully this can help us all.. :chuckle:

EDIT: If I post a video of you and you would/wouldn't like it posted here. just send me a PM or post here and I will add/delete it. That way everyone can be happy and satisfied. n_n

Anyway lets give this a Go! LET'S GO YOSHI!

:yoshi: Shiri :yoshi: I'd love you if you stickied! <3 :p

Lol dude calm down. If you have nothing either positive or critical to post, then it would be unwise to post, because then you start becoming an irritating nuisance.

@Vman, how big is yoshi's nair's hitbox? I'm asking because in the second match, how you lost your first stock was you up-B'd off the stage, and got spiked by falco's illusion. I'm wondering if you can press away from the stage, and nair, so that falco's illusion hits your nair, he dies, and then you can just second jump back to the stage, would that work?

I'm not exactly sure how "large" it is per se, but vs falco on the edge, i believe it's one of, if not THE best option...specifically facing backwards

As for Nairing away, and using my jump to recover, I actually haven't fully tested yet... Since Nair stays out for a long time, I'd assume it would NOT work because Yoshi wouldn't have enough "jump" in the recovery to make it back to the stage... I've yet to try this because I've assumed I could not make it, but I'll investigate further into this ^^ but never know till you try I suppose...

I don't think I'd make it, but I'm a try it ^^;

EDIT: As shiri stated it indeed is a "Go" No fastfall, and proper timing and yoshi will indeed regrab ^^

:yoshi: You can do it.

Neutral air is biggest and best right behind Yoshi, so you just turn around, jump backwards, and stick the neutral air out. Just don't fastfall it. The absolute worst that can happen is you tie with the Illusion, Falco dies, you get meteored, but you can recover with the instant double jump and you make it back on the edge.

Just make sure not to face Falco while you're neutral airing, as your probability for tying drastically decreases that way.

you can dropzone ( aka running of stage and using nair instantly ) and still recover , can be a killing edgeguard if you dont have time for anything else.
otherwise just fastfall down and then dj and nair so you cover both the edge and if he tries to go above it ( like many shieks do, but yoshi has to drop further down in order for it to work, since otherwise his DJC would kill him, luckily yoshis fastfall is beast ;D =

Isn't d-tilt the most effective way to edgeguard side-b? You can even fast fall a nair to cover their option of landing on the stage, then d-tilt immediately if they go for the edge, perhaps.

Good stuff. Looks like you yoshis have another edgeguarding tactic to use. :)
Well i've been doing for this for actually hours straight and unless I'm mistaken.. Yoshi can't do it from the edge and STILL come back and survive w/o some randall help...I could be wrong.. but if someone's got a vid or something that'd be great.. otherwise.. it doesnt appear as if

Nair from the ledge will work. with survival.

Drop-zone n-air is possible, it's just extremely tight timing with both the n-air and the DJ, so it's not worth doing. On platform stages you can wavedash off a side platform and n-air, even fast falling in some cases, that way you cover the edge, and slightly above/below with a reverse n-air. Besides that, and ledge hop, rising n-air, I don't particularly see much use for n-air edgeguarding, it almost always seems better to wait before acting, because Yoshi can stay indecisive for the longest times edgeguarding, due to the quickest edgehog and ridiculously good d-smash/tilt.

:yoshi: Put the analog in neutral before your double jump.

Then swing it in the direction you want to move after your input for neutral air.

DJC nairs are awesome for pressure, but they get out-prioritized pretty easily. What do you think of approaching with egg toss?

I feel like d-tilt and DJC'd egg lay are great when you want to be aggressive, but in a safe way. D-tilt has good range, is safe against CCing, little lag, gives you frame advantage, etc. Egg lay beats shield, has more range than nair in front, usually gets you some free damage/momentum, etc.

Maybe egg toss would be a good mix-up for when you think they'll jump. D-tilt/egg lay when they stay grounded; egg toss when they try to beat your approach with their own aerials?

Anyway, maybe this will give you some ideas for being aggressive while still safe. I find nair is a better tool for pressuring once you already have them trapped, sort of.

Hey Mind Trick... awesome watch... Took me a while to watch them all, but I finally got a good chance to analyze them all.. ^^

Wow.. man.. awesome good stuff here.. many interesting combos here.. allrite let's begin...

good stuff in here, I'm stealing that nair edgecancel thingy on dl64 from you :D
watch out with rolling after every laser on your shield, sometimes djing through it or just releasing is better if they catch on. also dont help falco recover with your eggs :p

I liked that fair - djc nair - grab, looks pretty slick, although I think I'm still gonna do an uptilt instead of the nair ^^
:p you kept your word that you were still gonna U-tilt... but I really, REALLY recommend, you use a Nair > Grab, after a Fair at low damage... it's splendid ^^; Another thing I notice... at around mid damage (30-50 range areas) On spacies.. I LOVE to do a RDJC Fair, and if you catch them in the air.. you attempted to connect with an U-tilt.. these such cases.. you should go for the Jab-reset combinations...These give you tons more options... I saw you use this a few times... I'd just like to see it a bit more.. You'll like the results! n_n

It'd be nice to see some more ECE's when he's off the map, but I understand, the risks/rewards of not doing so, but it does look pretty ^^;

Also, there is some interesting Shield pressure you can use w/combinations of DJC Nair, and Jab cancel, Jab.. repeat.. (Jab > Down on Stick > Jab > repeat).. You should fiddle with this and see what you get ^^; I think you should use your jabs, a bit more as well...these too can follow up into combos.. :)

I was a bit saddened, that you ended many of your combos early.. :( You'd get an Utilt/Ftilt, and would either Dsmash/Fsmash, when you could've strung together perhaps 2-3 Uairs, and finish w/Neutral or w/no DI a standing Egg Bomb (Down B) for marvelous damage.. ^^

Woot, I saw an Egg Lay <33333333

Overall!, Awesome watching.. your Yoshi Mind Trick.. on a random note: I'll prolly change my Yoshi color to the standard Yoshi.. seems all the active Yoshi players use that Cyan color.. and I know I'm like the Last Yoshi to join the banwagon.. so I guess, I should be the changer.. but then that could be tight that all Yoshi's use that Blue.. idk :p

Keep up the Great work with Yoshi, and Boo for Fox in tourney.. use Yoshi, he's awesome! n_n but I understand... Great watch.. I'll get to Chival and others now..

Thx for the vids keep it up! <3

Yep, sorry Chival, I'm watching them right now! n_n

EDIT: Allrite Chival, I just finished watching them all...

So far so good... well for just picking him up...! I'm glad to stuck to Yoshi!

Allritey.. it seems you are having some "confidence problems" using your DJC's. Playing Yoshi, in general is a risk in itself.. so hopefully as time progresses.. you'll get over this confidence problem... Just trust, yourself, and give DJC's a shot, you'll come to learn, when to/when not to.. use it.. :)

On your matches vs Falcon, Dtilt is very.. VERY handy/useful in this matchup.. It's a great gimp. set knockback.. etc.. Use it a bit more often! ^^; After your aerials try to throw in some Tilts after aerials.. Fair > Utilt/Ftilt.. DJC Uairs are very useful in any Ffall MU in general as many comboing opportunities arrise..! :)

It seems you're uncomfortable using ECE's atm as well, but as your experience grows you'll become more confident.. with these..

I saw many Dash attacks... In general.. Yoshi's dash attack is really only useful... at high % kills.. Low percent opponents will just CC > punish... at low enough damage, just near retalliation damage :( so try to decline the dash attack usage until higher % is reached.. n_n

Yoshi's grab game on Ffallers is gold.. try to land more of these off... specifically w/ffallers.. you'll be using Dthrow... Dthrow > Uair/Nair, Dmash w/away DI.. or you can cross up w/bairs.. many, many options here.. Try and land more grabs off! :)

Nair/Bair are very good, don't be afraid to use these.. RDJ Fair, DJ fairs etc.. Need to be precise, and many of the ones you threw out. would've never connected anyway, because there are timing issues... another thing experience will solve.. ok.. :)

There were MANY times.. your opponent did NOT tech your moves, and you were in close enough range for Jab resets.. try and implement these more.. Jab resets lead to multiple Uairs and further combo potential.. n_n

Matches vs Falco, you seemed to have more confidence.. thats awesome! n_n but it seemed whenever you began to get comboed, you panic, which is understandable becuz you need to choose what you will/won't challenge to maintain your jump... best options are to either challenge on the way back down.. or to wiggle out of Freefall, and Airdodge to the stage, both ways work well..

Use your shield man!! I didn't see your shield used very often in the matches vs Falco. he seemed to just charge in blindly and rely on techskill to rally up damage on you.. at least shield.. and of course vs Falco.. and other Falcos' in general get used to lightshielding to avoid constant shield pressure... ^^

As stated earlier.. specially on Falco, stick to D-throw. it's the most potential throw to use for damage/combos... Avoid using U-throw as it has no knockback and Falco can attack (Dair) out of ur Up throw and your momentum can be shifted easily here.. :( so try and stay away from any throws that are not Down... Granted, Back and Forward throw are good to throw them off the map, but I personally stick to dthrow for a guaranteed follow up.. :)

Wooooooooooooot EGG LAY! <33

above, get comfortable using DJC, attacks.. Don't get too overaggressive like I first did... you have to choose your moves wisely you know! =p

Lastly, USE YOSHI'S JAB game more... it's highly underrated.. Either with Jab Cancels.. or even use Jab combinations combined w/DJC's.. many useful combinations can happen! and my fave is the jab reset(s)

Keep it up man! I hope all this helps, I'll try to give more insight once I get a bit more time too..
<33 it Chival keep practicing! can't wait to see you and more Yoshi players arise! <33

Awesome advice, Vman, as expected. I strongly agree with you on the confidence thing. I need to work on believing in myself in general, but especially with Yoshi. Since I really like this character and want to eventually prove my ability with him, sometimes that causes me to be anxious or forget everything I've learned.

I know that I can remain true to my ambition though. Together we can all push Yoshi's limits farther than anyone could have even imagined. :)

Refering to VMan's matches against pikachu, and vs any pikachu matches in general... I almost always see pika ledgehop > uair when he is on the ledge and his opponent is right above him..
Well, why not make use of this weak/low knockback move and go for a DJCC Nair.
