Tecmo Koei said:
DEAD OR ALIVE 5 marries the signature fighting style of the popular DOA series with stunning new graphics, new online features, and new martial arts techniques to create a strong new direction for the franchise.

In DEAD OR ALIVE 5, players will once again take on the roles of the cast of DEAD OR ALIVE fighters in an intense, action-packed brawler set in visually striking locations from around the world. The famed DOA hand-to-hand combat returns, supported by completely new 3D stages that update the series’ characteristic style with a fresh look and feel.

DOA5 stages are more than spectacular visual backdrops, instead playing to a fighter’s strengths. As a fight progresses, the backdrop will change and interact with players. Skilled fighters will be able to utilize these dynamic stages to pit their opponents against fresh obstacles to create a new fighting experience. This fusion of combat and dynamically changing backdrops is a formula for the evolution of fighting games as “Fighting Entertainment”.

With a sensual yet realistic style, DEAD OR ALIVE 5 characters are rendered in incredibly lifelike detail. From smooth, lithe muscles to emotive facial expressions, every character comes to life. Characters can even perspire as they fight, with realistic depiction of wet skin, damp hair, and moist, semi-translucent clothing as the match progresses.

Along with a rich array of single player modes including story mode, DOA5 offers new online options with arcade-style matches, tournaments, and social features. Players can be paired into one-off matches or work their way up the leaderboards for the honor and prestige of competing in global tournaments, the resulting matches of which can be watched by any player as a learning tool.

No longer content to be eye candy with a deadly kick, the female fighters of DEAD OR ALIVE 5 show a whole new level of character and style. The unique style of each fighter, both male and female, will be accentuated by their individual personalities as they battle with a new look and feel for an intense new generation of DEAD OR ALIVE combat.

At the September 2011 Tokyo Game Show, Tecmo Koei announced that Dead or Alive 5 is finally in development! They provided a teaser of image of series mascot Kasumi bearing sweat pouring down her body and grim determination set in her pose, and they also showcased a short gameplay trailer of a battle between Hayate and Hayabusa atop an under-contruction skyscraper.

During the fight, two new major gameplay elements are introduced; the Power Blow and Cliffhanger:

Here's a little more explanation about what's going on in the pre-alpha gameplay. Keep in mind that the game is still in development, so things could change between now and the final version. The part where time slows down and Hayate hits Hayabusa back into the steel beams--that's a Power Blow. The fighter doing a Power Blow has a little time to change the direction. So you could choose what Danger Zone to send an opponent into. When Hayabusa is dangling from the edge of the platform--that's a new kind of Danger Zone we're calling a Cliffhanger. In the video, Hayate just charges and beats him down, but there's actually a little gameplay going on during a Cliffhanger. Hayabusa could have turned things around on Hayate. BTW, you can tell if a strike hits high, mid or low by the direction of the hit effect. In the footage, they haven't changed very much from the past. Just keep in mind that we're still pre-alpha. We do have a new concept for the core fighting as well, though. And we'll definitely talk to you more about it when there's something solid to show.
The second part, released in early October, showed the continuation of the fight on the ground. It doesn't show anything nearly as fancy as the two things above, but teases a change in the counter system and some even crazier environmental interactions, if a car Ryu pragmatically uses as a flying battering ram is any indication.

Yosuke Hayashi, the producer, stresses that the game will revolve around the term 'fighting entertainment', as opposed to the more mainstream 'fighting game'.

Later, in an interview at Tecmo's TGS booth, I asked Hayashi to clear up that terminology. The early generation of fighting games, around Street Fighter 2, he said, "had some of the most outrageous graphics, fun gameplay, and really a lot of stuff going on." He implied that, in comparison, modern fighting games emphasize online competition over wowing players with unprecedented visuals.

"It's not as over-the-top, it's not as much of the entertainment aspect that the originals had, and so they seem a little bit dull, in some aspects." The term "fighting entertainment" represents an effort to return spectacle to the genre.

But Dead or Alive has basically always been about spectacle, and not just the embarrassing kind of spectacle the female characters provide. Stages are multi-layered, complicated, and interactive, with fighters knocking each other off of waterfalls, into electrified walls, and through wooden floors. How could it get any more "entertaining?"

"So in the past Dead or Alive games," Hayashi said, "most of the dangers were fixed, set areas on the stage that you can knock your opponent into -- and they were just set there, the stage didn't change a whole lot. If you watch the video from our press event, you can see the entire stage changing and taking a different shape, and all sorts of chaos happening." You'll be able to trigger changes to the "geometry" of stages in addition to moving up, down, and through them.

That sounds to us like a pretty natural evolution of that particular series -- more natural than, say, volleyball and bathing suit gifting.
As promotion for the game and perhaps a bit of sport, Team Ninja also announced a 'Make Your Own Fighting Move!' contest on the 28th of October. The sender of the winning move would have their combo worked into the game, and have their name credited in the staff roll. The contest ended on November the 18th, with the winner still yet unannounced.

On December 8th, Tecmo Koei held a press conference for their two flagship upcoming titles, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Dead or Alive 5, in San Francisco. There, guests were treated to a short demonstration of the games' multiplayer and singleplayer, and were invited to hava a go themselves. One particular man, Giancarlo Varanini of Gamespot, took part in a short interview giving his thoughts on the demo and his concerns:

Team Ninja was short to confirm after that a playable alpha trial version of DOA5 would come with every preordered copy of Ninja Gaiden 3, with four characters - Hayabusa and Hitomi would be in the Xbox 360 and Hayate and Ayane would duke it out on the PS3. Those lucky buyers of the rare Collector's Edition would receive all four characters for either console.

The alpha demo gave us great insight into the world of DOA5. All characters now have dedicated sidesteps distinct from the usual free stepping, and all of them also now have double-direction 'expert' holds for mid kicks and punches. To help gather the massive amount of feedback for the demo, Team Ninja set up a website meant to help players rate certain aspects of the demo such as character and stage design, and let them write a few paragraphs with their thoughts and suggestions on the demo.

As a pretext to the insane trailer released nary a few days later, an Inside Xbox OXM report was posted up onto Xbox LIVE with a short interview with Yohei Shimbori, the Game Director at Team Ninja. It revealed some interesting details about the new Power Blow feature implemented into the game, the more sparse HUD and lifebars, and was also the first glimpses of Ayane and Hitomi in battle. See it here.

Perhaps as a representation of the seriousness DOA5 is taking with it's release, March 5th saw the release of an epic gameplay trailer above, first starring Ayane and the DOA poster-girl herself, Kasumi, with her newly refined appearance and a whole host of teleportation moves, and Virtua Fighter's very own Akira Yuki, Ba-Ji-Quan master and one of the first fighters to ever set foot in 3D fighting games. He will star as a guest character and is perhaps a clue to an interesting partnership in DOA's future.

Ninja Gaiden 3's release was a great success, and the alpha trial, with help of the survey, gave Team Ninja a massive amount of feedback on the current state of DOA5. They stressed that they would take all of it into account when constructing their final build.

On April 23rd, DOA character Leifang's birthday, an announcement was made by virtue of a tweet from Team Ninja Studios that two new characters would be revealed by the end of the week. Despite expectations given by the date, surprise was felt when Christie and Bayman were the two to make their debut, duking it out in the new 'Hotzone' stage, with the slim assassin now rocking a bra (though still refusing to zip up that jumpsuit of hers) and other new little details, and with the aged mercenary with his trademark beret conspicuously absent, sporting a facial scar, and wearing highly militarized getup. The very first hint towards DOA5's storyline was made by another tweet explaining Bayman's new appearance.

A short article a little later from Siliconera revealed Tecmo-Koei's ambitious plans for DOA5 - the company plans to sell over a million copies of the game, complete with paid DLC. It is not known what the DLC content will be, though most seem to have settled on downloadable costumes for the characters as most likely. See it here:

A tweet from Team Ninja Community Manager Chin Soon Sun claimed that a completely new fighter would be revealed at the London MCM Expo, running from the 25th to the 27th of May.

On May 23rd, a picture was posted up by Team Ninja claiming a new trailer would be released later that day. Sure enough, at 5pm GMT, a new video of Leifang and Zack battling in the stage 'The Show' was released to the public. In stark contrast to the deadly serious trailers of previous characters, this video had a decidedly slapstick feel to it, with the two fighters dressed up in comedic clown costumes and the stage being set inside - you guessed it - a circus! Both fighters have remained rather unchanged from previous DOAs, with Leifang having a considerably more oriental look to her, and Zack... just being Zack, only now with detachable flowery afro! The stage boasted such features as moving tigers, rings of fire, trampolines, and even human cannons!

E3 was surely slated to be an epic display of DOA5, and so it was - twelve fighters, six stages, booth babes (a Team Ninja standard!) and a short and semi-casual tournament arranged to take place over the three days of the event, with the winner gaining the right to visit the DOA5 launch party and battle Yohei Shimbori himself, the director behind much of DOA5. The participants and commentators were both given plenty of time to mess around with the new build of the game before it began, and some intensely interesting info was revealed - the return of four-point holds from the alpha's three points, sidesteps were turned into double-direction up/down inputs, Power Blows were now considered part of the character's moveset instead of a dedicated attack and could only be used from under 50% health, and most importantly, the mechanic of 'Critical Burst':

Each character has a particular move that causes a "Critical Burst," I've also read that some characters (like Tina) may have two moves that do this.

Anyway, when you hit your opponent and they're stunned, there's a threshold that determines how many more times you can stun them. This is represented on screen by a flashing gray bar on top of the life bar. If you stun them almost to the end of this threshold and then hit them with a specific move, this will cause a "Critical Burst."

The "Critical Burst" is represented by a puff of smoke, a screen shake and a unique sound effect. When this happens, your opponent cannot hold, block, attack or throw and you have a number of time to guarantee any attack you want. You could potentially do a "Power Blow" here, though you can't charge it up fully as it takes too long, or now launch your opponent for a nice juggle from which they can't escape.
A full list of changes and the analysis that the excerpt came from, if you're interested, was compiled by a competitive player and found here.

Aside from the requisite excellent scenes of fighters doing what they do best - kicking *** - the E3 trailer also revealed the second Virtua Fighter guest to show themselves - Sarah Bryant appeared at the very end after being mistaken for Tina Armstrong by Zack (and paying witness towards her playful needling). An offhanded hint from Hayashi offered some speculative fuel to the fire - perhaps she and Akira weren't the only Virtua Fighter guests to make an appearance?

On June 25th, a picture with the caption 'New Fighter, New Footage' was unveiled, promising a brand new video of a yet unseen character, followed shortly by a scan from Famitsu being circled around of the newcomer. And so it was! Rig, a Canadian Taekwondo user, battled Christie and Bass in an explosive trailer, with two short cutscenes to help tie everything together.

Who is Rig?
- A natural born fighter, he has used his powerful instincts to master of the art of taekwondo. He has run the oil rig from a young age, and his colleagues simply call him "Rig." But even he doesn't know his real name or where he comes from. He learned taekwondo on the oil rig, which led him to create his own style, with plenty of moves he came up with himself.
This reveal also coincided with an update on the Tecmo-Koei Facebook page with a detailed description of DOA5's features, and that is the quote at the top of this post.

On July 1st, the tantalizing contents of the Dead or Alive 5 Collector's Edition was revealed. Aside from the game itself (of course), the CE Edition includes the soundtrack CD, an exclusive hardcover artbook, a poster featuring Kasumi herself, and a slip with a code for unlocking Premium swimsuit costumes for the girls, all snugly held within a metal embossed case.

And you can get all that just an extra 20$! How cool is that? Only available at certain retailers, so you better get those orders in quick!

On 19th of July, some time later, Team Ninja unveiled a trailer of DOA5's famous tag team mode, with two teams of two fighters battling it out with each other. The mode appears to be just as frenetic as previous tags, perhaps even more so! A new addition to the mode is Tag Power Blows - when both fighters are under 50% health, you can have both of them gang up to wail on the opponent, with a catch - you can't use it again that round! Team Ninja promised great updates to the tag team animations the game will offer.

The video also marked the debut of three characters - series favourite Jann Lee made his first DOA5 appearance, lacking a shirt (par the course) and sporting a new excellently detailed look showing off his chiseled muscles. The other two faces were La Mariposa, an adept female wrestler with a beautiful face under the mask, and Mr Strong, another masked macho man with a preference for hurling his opponents across the arena. Time will tell who these mysterious characters are!

Completely understandably feeling that DOA5 wasn't offering enough of the lovely ladies, Team Ninja decided to pander to the more... kinky side of the fanbase with a trailer starring Hitomi, Kasumi and Lei Fang kitted out in revealing furry bikinis. This OP sure isn't one to complain! And you can get a piece of that tasty content yourself (no, not in THAT way ^^) by preordering the game at specific retailers.

On the 8th August, Team Ninja unveiled the very character whom everyone was waiting for, Helena, four other series favourites Eliot, Brad Wong, Gen Fu and Lisa Hamilton, and the last series unfavourite itself, Alpha-152. The opera singer and young scientist were sporting vastly updated appearances, now looking like truly beautiful woman in their own right. Eliot now had a distinctly - dare I say it - handsome appearance befitting a DOA male, and Brad Wong... well, let's say that all those years of heavy drinking finally seemed to have caught up to him. Gen Fu looked very much the same as his classic appearance would have it.

The trailer was the first massive look into the story of Dead or Alive 5 and follows up on the hint given upon the release of Bayman and Christie's trailer several months earlier. In it, we see Helena Douglas giving a rousing speech (which could quite easily be attributed to Team Ninja itself!) about the resurrection of DOATEC after its destruction in DOA4, the various fighters giving surprised expressions as they hear her on the television, and thus setting the stage for the fifth Dead or Alive tournament.

Despite being possibly one of the worst kept secrets in the fighting game community in the world ever, after a string of humorous leaks and images, and immediately succeeding an embarrassing cutscene leak, Team Ninja finally had something to say about three of the four remaining characters, posting up an image promising three reveals that week (and possibly through gritted teeth and a forced grin). The reveal trailer released by Team Ninja on the 11th of September FINALLY marked the official debut of Spanish MMA champion and DOA newcomer Mila, who was seen to be squaring off in a friendly bout against Zack in the gym, and participating in what was probably meant to be a friendly bout against Tina atop the diner where she works (you'll know what I mean if you watch the trailer...).

Who is Mila?
- Mila is an up-and-coming MMA champion who has scored spectacular victories all over the world. She spends her days training at the gym in between shifts at her part-time job, honing her skills as a lightning fast, orthodox striker with a strong follow-up ground game. Mila also feels intense admiration for a certain fighter, and she has entered the fifth Dead or Alive Tournament to follow her dream of taking on her idol in the ring.
A Famitsu scan and a pair of match videos very shortly after Mila's reveal was privy to the other two promised debuts - Pai Chan of Virtua Fighter fanfare and Gen Fu squared off in the Sanctuary as the last two reveals before the official launch of the game itself on the 25th. Gen Fu, while retaining much of his classic appearance, now sported a slightly updated look with visible wrinkles betraying his age. But don't let that fool you - this OP certainly doesn't doubt he'll still be a force to be reckoned with.

The final week before the game's release saw the inevitable release of the launch trailer of the game at the Tokyo Game Show - exactly one year after it's debut there in 2011 - and while a small trailer, it nonetheless highlighted all that the game stood for and revealed a few interesting tidbits into the game's story mode; an amused Christie gently loosing her charms on an unsuspecting Eliot, and - shockingly - Hayate and Ayane teaming up with each other to impale Kasumi upon their blades! The shockwaves of outrage over that one are still circling the globe as we speak.

The day finally dawned on the 25th as everyone aside from the lucky few to receive their early copies rushed to purchase the game. At the same time, in San Francisco, Team Ninja hosted their grand launch party, pitting a swathe of veteran DOA players from across the United States against each other in one mighty tournament for the grand $7,500 prize. Erik 'Rikuto' Argetsinger was the eventual triumphant, rattling off a hard-earned flawless streak against some formidable foes, but undoubtedly everyone who loves the DOA series also won something that day as well.

The multitude of leaks surrounding the game revealed a lot about its intended final state. Players were quick to hack apart the executable file of the alpha demo not long after its release and soon discovered the entire roster of characters, their costumes, and even the stages, and a leaked achievement list a month before the release of the game also had a few things to say. The inclusions of Rig, Mila and the three Virtua Figher guests were revealed far ahead of their time. Ein, Tengu and Leon were also revealed to have been cut early in the game's development, much to the dismay of their fans.
Alpha-152 was indeed listed as playable in the code of the alpha demo, but a reference to only one usable costume caused a lot of debate as whether or not she would be a CPU exclusive character. The leaked achievement list finally confirmed her as fully playable, listing one achievement that required the player to both obtain all online titles and unlock her for use. She is currently believed to be unlocked after obtaining exactly 300 titles for use.

What are you waiting for? Get out there and grab your copy of DOA5 too! We're waiting!

"Are you one of the world's greatest fighters? Then get your *** in the tourney!"

Was just wondering if someone would make a thread for this. DOA isn't that popular around here. :(

Super excited for this. Haven't got Dimensions yet, but I really want to see the continuation of the story (yeah, I care about that). Gameplay still unfortunately looks like that of DOA4, but it's pre-alpha, so there's plenty of time left for changes.

Of course, there's still that obligatory hope from me that the grapplers are balanced with the ninjas, now that Itagaki isn't running the show any more...

To me the combo systems seems drastically changed, every attack stunned and it seemed more fast-paced in general. But we've seen only one fight...

Tina was good! Dead or Alive 4 and Ultimate weren't imbalanced anyway imo, but I do hope that this 'fighting entertainment' doesn't go at the expense of balance...

Furthermore I'm hoping for a better storyline, even more amazing gameplay, a way to fix those stupid get-up attacks and a lagless online play!

Dead or Alive 4 didn't feel like a fighting game to me.

I was massively disappointed and just altogether skipped it

Counter damage was too high, and too easy to get imo.

I like the concept, but I think it needs to be tweaked a bit.
They lower it in DOA4. Like in 3 I would abuse it so hard because I knew my friend's set ups. I won like every game just countering because I'd do like 3x damage. I've been playing a lot of DOAD lately and the damage definitely is balanced when it comes to countering.

All of the attacks that stunned stun on a normal hit anyway, so none of those seem to have been changed from DOA4/D. But I trust TN can think of some interesting ways to shake up the gameplay. It's proven that Hayate has a couple of new attack strings and cool-looking charge-throw, so we'll have to wait and see!

I've never played any other fighting games except for DOA, and I've heard that it's more balanced than other contemporary fighters, but anyone can tell that Bass and Bayman are still not nearly as viable as Kasumi and Hayate. What I meant was that Itagaki just really had a love of ninjas (I think he went on record saying a wrestler should never be able to beat a ninja, iirc), so, now that he's not involved in this game, TN can make efforts to make them more competitive. I'm praying that's the case.

I think you meant DOA2 or Ultimate, in DOA3 I'm pretty sure counters did horrible damage. I'll agree that counters are even less useful than then in DOAD.

I agree. I would personally like it if you would get (more heavily) punished for doing a wrong hold.

I'm sure it will be fine :)

True. Despite of the fact that the game was quite balanced, it was clear he liked to see some characters (Kasumi/Hayabusa/Gen Fu/Lei Fang) to perform better than others (Bass/Bayman/Leon/Tengu).

Honestly I have to say that I'm not very impressed by the trailer or the interviews and I don't have any high hopes for the game. These stage, slow motion and other graphical effects have made it too much of a spectacle, and I fear that it will be at the cost of gameplay. I have my doubts whether their philosophy of having everything revolve around 'fighting game entertainment' will turn out well.

I'm more optimistic. Team Ninja is quite a bit larger than what it was when it made DoA4, so all these advances in all these areas seem at least partially possible. If Hayashi is a man of his word then I won't be too worried.

I'm definitely very pleased about the darker, less animesque art style the trailer showed. That's something to look forward to, I find.

I've played all DOA games minus DOA4 and DOA Extreme 2/Paradise. It's fair to say I will be getting this game, and I will main a female character and sub main all other females. To hell with the males, since they don't have large, bouncing, wonderful, sexy, voluptuous, beautifully sweet, tasty... combo potential. :awesome:

Also, regardless of what anyone says, I liked and still like Other M. :088:

You should try playing DOA3. :)

Also, be a man, use the males, since they're all without fail worse than their female counterparts anyway. Never fails to annoy me seeing a spindly little college girl hurling a 30 stone wrestler a dozen feet in the air. Or shattering concrete with a stomp. And then giggle once she's beaten you and complain you weren't taking it seriously.

I've been wanting to play DOA4 for the longest time now. That, and the 3DS DOA game as well.
I did play DOA3. I used to own DOA3 when I had my old XBOX. XD

Yeah, but men are ugly... well, there are rare occasions, like FF9 Kuja, or Guilty Gear's Bridgette, but that's besides the point! The point is, girls have boobs, and men don't, so girls win. XD

Good a time as ever to revive this. Sorry for being a bad OP. :p

Make Your Move ended on the 18th, as planned. No winner has been announced yet.

Also, Tecmo Koei's press conference is taking place as of time of posting in San Francisco. So far they've only talked about Ninja Gaiden 3, but it's been promised that we'll see some footage of a playable DOA5 yet.

Will update the OP with new info as it arrives. :)

EDIT: Oh, yeah, not related to DOA per se, but Ayane plays a role in NG3 and Hayate gets a mention. The Mugen Tenshin clan katana Jinran-maru is being granted to Ryu temporarily to replace his broken sword.

I want to see what they've done to the girls stages.
Not at the rate they're going, lol.

I've been sitting staring at the Tecmo Facebook page (they're updating it sporadically with photos) for the past fifty minutes and nothing's happened.

EDIT: Late as it is, I can't stay up forever.

If anything's happened by tomorrow (it better!) I'll update it then.

I think it's a safe bet that all playable characters from the previous DOA games (not counting guest characters and bosses) will return in DOA5... along with 2-3 new characters. That tends to be the formula.

Hitomi's Jacket looks like the zipper is broken at the bottom.

I hate when that happens, it can't zip down properly and even if you can get it to it doesn't zip up right anymore.
