IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT MELEE THEN POST THEM HERE!

Don't copy this guide. If you do, at least credit me by saying I made it but don't take the credit for yourself. I have decided to construct a master guide. Basically, the following things will be given:

- How to unlock all characters
- How to unlock all stages
- Misc. unlockables
- How to open events 11-51
- Master trophy guide
- Master special bonus point guide
- Master special message guide
- Info on Advanced Techniques
- Info on Action Replay/Debug Menu
- Easter Eggs
- Rumors
- Questions/Answers (FAQ) Section

If you have any questions about Melee they will be promptly answered and added to the questions/answers section below. I went out of my way to create this guide so if you say anything bad about it I will come to your house, put your head below the surface of a body of water, and hold you down until you stop moving and the bubbles cease to rise to the top. Now if you see something I missed feel free to point it out. Let's get started!

Characters

Dr. Mario: To unlock Dr. Mario simply complete Classic or Adventure mode on normal with Mario and don't use a continuation. Or play 100 vs mode matches.

Luigi: A little more complicated but fairly easy. To unlock him go to Adventure mode and at the end of the very first level before you cross the finish line wait until there is a 2 in the seconds area. It will look like this XX:X2:XX. When the 2 is in the seconds area cross immediately and you should fight Luigi instead of Mario in the next level. Beat him in under 1 minute and then complete Adventure without using continuation. Or play 800 vs mode matches.

Jigglypuff: To unlock Jigglypuff simply complete Classic or Adventure mode with any character without using continuation. Or play 50 vs mode matches.

Falco: Complete 100 Man Melee. Or play 300 vs mode matches.

Ganondorf: Complete Event Match 29: Triforce Gathering. Or play 600 vs mode matches.

Pichu: Complete Even Match 37: Legendary Pokemon. Or play 200 vs mode matches.

Young Link: Complete either Classic or Adventure mode with 10 characters. Contrary to popular belief, one of them doesn't have to be Link. I know this because I tested it first hand. Or play 500 vs mode matches.

Mewtwo: Play a total amount of time of 20 hours in vs mode. Time is measured by the amount of human players playing. For instance:

1 Player: 20 hours
2 Players: 10 hours
3 Players: 6 hours
4 Players: 5 hours

Or play 700 vs mode matches.

Marth: Complete either Classic or Adventure mode with the 14 default characters. You could also use all 14 default characters in vs mode with humans. Or play 400 vs mode matches.

Roy: Complete either Classic or Adventure with Marth on normal difficulty without using continuation. Or play 900 vs mode matches.

Mr. Game & Watch: Complete either Classic, Adventure, or Target Test with the other 24 characters. Or play 1000 vs mode matches.

Stages

Brinstar Depths: Play 50 vs mode matches.

Fourside: Play 100 vs mode matches.

Big Blue: Play 150 vs mode matches.

Poke Floats: Play 200 vs mode matches.

Mushroom Kingdom II (Subcon): Get either a Birdo or a Pidget trophy.

Kongo Jungle: Complete 15 minute melee.

Yoshi's Island: Hit over 1300 ft. in Homerun Contest. Oddly enough, Yoshi is the best person to pick for this goal. A special tatic would be to shorthop and then use dair. If you are an advanced level player, use SHFFLADA.

Dream Land: Complete Target Test with all 25 characters.

Flat Zone: Complete either Classic or Adventure mode with Mr. Game & Watch.

Battlefield: Complete All-Star mode at least once with any character.

Easter Eggs

Fox/Falco Secret Taunt:

Eaode said:
For fox/falco's secret taunt, you have to be on corneria/venom and alternate pressing left and right on the D-pad, being hit anytime before the end of the speaking will cancel it, and it can only be done once per match
Doraki said:
Also, for fox and falco's secret taunt, you have to press down on the dpad for exactly 1 frame (which sometimes happen when you do left-right-left-right).
Samus's Extending Grappling Beam:

Eaode said:
And to do Samus' extended Grapple beam, You press Z, Up, Down, Up, Z on the D-pad before the regular grapple is at full length. This can also be done in the air. I'll give you the link to the thread with the info in a minute.

Action Replay/Debug Menu

The Action Replay (more commonly refered to as simply AR) is a cheating/hacking device that can be used on a variety of games not the least of which include SSBM. Using AR, you can obtain things that you normally wouldn't be able to, use characters unavailable in regular play, play on more stages, and do a variety of other things.

One thing that AR allows us to do is use the Debug Menu which is a menu used by the creators of the game for beta testing. They left the programming in the memory banks of SSBM so we have the ability to access it via special AR codes.

Rumors

Melee, being as popular as it is, has amassed several false rumors. This section will tell you all the nasty rumors about Melee out there. None of these things can be obtained.

Toad: There was a rumor that Toad was in Melee but do not be decieved! He is not unlockable. The rumor was that you had to shoot all the credits in the shooting game after completing one of the 1P modes.

Sonic and Tails: The most popular rumor, it is also false. You CANNOT unlock Sonic or Tails. A magazine released this nasty little rumor but it turned out to be an April Fools prank. The way that they are supposedly obtained is by getting more than 20 KOs in Cruel Melee but this has been proven unsuccessful. However, Sonic was going to be included in Melee but they ran out of time so they couldn't add him. There is still hope though! Sonic has high chances of appearing in Brawl.

Giga Mushroom: Supposedly a secret item that fills in the only blank space on the Item List. It has been proven false. The way to obtain it was to grab 1,000 mushrooms of any sort.

Advanced Techniques

Though I know a great deal of advanced techniques, I do not know them all. Basically, an advanced technique is a move not labeled by official Nintendo guides but rather moves and skills that can be learned and applied in casual or tournament (more often tournament) play to better your game beyond how the game is meant to be played. These techniques are absoulutely required for you to become a master at this game. Check this link:

The Advanced Technique Thread

Good luck on your advanced technique training.;)

Questions/Answers

Q: How do you change the music for stages?

A: Unlock Sound Test and before you select a stage hold down either L or R before you press A and make sure you keep holding on to it until you get to the stage. There is a 12% chance that the music will change by itself.

Q: How do you transform into Shiek before the match starts?

A: Hold A before the match begins.

Q: Any tips on how to catch Celebi?

A: You have to unlock everything (except for trophies) and then find him in a poke ball. Once you have everything then go to VS mode, turn on Pokeballs as the only item, and play a 20 minute match against a lv. 1 CPU. If you don't find it that way then try try again. You will usually get it the first time though.

If you have any questions then ask and they will be added here with an answer.

Frickin sweet. Nice job, this guide make a ton of sense and is easy to understand. This should help cut down on some of the spam in the Melee Discussion.

That's what I was trying to do. The Questions section should take care of anything that isn't already answered in the guide. If you need any help, feel free to ask your questions and I will add it to that section with its answer. That way you won't have to look through the pages (once this thread gets a lot of pages) and will be able to be viewed on the first page in case you forget. Also, feel free to post suggestions and I may add it to the guide.

Marth can also be unlocked by having a human player play as each of the original 14 characters at least once in vs. mode.

Yeah I heard about that but I haven't tested it yet so I didn't want to post a fact I didn't know was going to work. If you have already tested it I will add it.

Glad I could help. If the guide isn't help you out then ask what you need help with. Some of the special bonus points are hard to score (I know from experience).

He's usually the first character I unlock when I don't have my memory card with me and my friend's memory card lacks characters or something. It's not too hard to test, just do a bunch of quick 1 stock matches with 4 human players.

Good guide btw.

you should add the easiest method for diong the homerun contest, ganon

upsmash, dair, upsmash, dair (repeat until time is out) homerun bat or warlock punch, both will get you 1700+, it's much easier than yoshi's

then there's always roy's method of charging up smashes until you have 5 seconds left then charge B, will get you the needed distance i'm sure, they're also less frustrating, much less frustrating

or pika and pichu, up smash twice, tap A to stand up bag, no ping hit (just swing the bat the other way, but make sure you're right next to the bag facing it, then swing it the other way)

they're much eaiser than yoshi's method's to me, and no skill is needed, no shorthopping no nothing, just timing

those are just things to help with unlocking like, 4 trophies and a stage all in one shot if anyone wanted to know

There are two things that aren't listed here that I think should be added:

The first is starting a match as Shiek, rather than Zelda. This I do not remember how to do.

The second is changing the music on Hyrule Temple to the music from Fire Emblem. I'm not sure of the exact combination, but I usually spam L-R-L-R on the loading screen.

If I may comment, it looks a lot like the NP SSBM guide. :p

you change from zelda to shiek by holding A at the start of a match (while it loads). Also maybe put links to the compendium for people looking for advanced techs?

Congrats, Kenny! :) How did this take you? This is very, very neat. I like the pictures of the stages. :p You really didn't get the information from the guide or anything?

Edit:: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I nominate this for a sticky!

I unlocked everything myself so I referred to my data. It took me 4 days to construct (the special bonus points section took the longest amount of time). I know you are an admin on another site, would you like to use the guide?

The second is changing the music on Hyrule Temple to the music from Fire Emblem. I'm not sure of the exact combination, but I usually spam L-R-L-R on the loading screen.
There are several stages this works on. In order to do it, every human player must hold L or R.
Some of the stages I know:

Hyrule: Fire Emblem remix
Termina: Saria's song (lost woods theme)
Yoshi's Island: (I don't know the song)
Poke Stadium: Battle theme
Icicle Mountain: Balloon Fight
Big Blue: Mach Rider
Mushroom Kingdom stages: Dr. Mario fever theme
Onett: Earthbound theme
Battlefield: Multi-man melee theme
FD: Event match 51

BTW, Fantastic work. Too bad the rep system is gone...

No (to a certain degree). I know for a fact, and I've tested it, that you only have to do it with one player in the case of Hyrule. I did it on a game New Year's Eve, and I didn't hear the distinctive click of L or R from any of the other players (two of which probably did not know the secret).

:)

And I actually knew about Termina Bay and Mushroom Kingdom, now that you mention it. Yay for forgotten knowledge!

That's strange. I thought you had to do it for every stage. Well, you learn something new everyday!

Also, I forgot to mention in my earlier post: the music will change on its own from time to time.

I have completed the Special Message Section and thus I have completed the whole guide. However, any suggestions I can add to the guide will be considered and most likely added if it is good enough.

Edit: Sky2042, I added the random music change to the questions/answers section. There is a 12% chance of it doing so. I am surprised I haven't recieved more questions yet.

Maybe you could put info about Fox's and Falco's secret taunts on Corneria and Venom?
Or some info on how to extend Samus' grapple beam?
