Advice on Hypothetical Gameplay Mechanic

Hey, I'm Jedisquid. I'm 14 and hope to someday make a fighting game that is sort of a mix between Smash and Marvel 3.
So, not taking into account that there are 3 characters you play as in a Marvel match and you would have to find a way to seperate which character to use in a Smash environment, I have one question.

Say there was a way in which you could play as multiple characters in one match, and you picked a team.
Would Assists similar to those in Marvel 3 be able to work in a Smash Bros game?
