Known, unknown?
I can't say this is a part of my knowledge of the game.I asked around, and no one seems to know about this. So even if it's well-documented (I couldn't find it) I hope someone will get something out of this and use it.
If you are jabbing in sequence and attempt to grab, the game will see the grab as a jab and continue your jab pattern unless you cancel it with a crouch first. This is well-known and documented and used frequently by many characters.
If you shield and attempt to grab, you shield grab. This is because there is a special circumstance the game understands: "I'm trying to grab out of shield right now." As far as I know, this is a special case and Brawl knows what a shield grab is.
However, interestingly enough, if you attempt to grab after an action has been performed out of shield very quickly, Brawl will read it as a shield (just like in the case of grab) and you will simply shield again.
Because of this, glide tossing into a grab isn't usually possible, or not smoothly. We simply wait until the glide animation ends and then grab, if we do it at all.
I have found however that if you glide toss downwards (up doesn't really work, the animation is usually too long, but I didn't test everyone) and then immediately tap down, you can grab during the glide toss animation; your character will slide into their grab, extending the range of the grab by a small amount and making you look super cool and flashy.
This is very useful for ZSS and Peach, and maybe even Diddy Kong.
