I think the key is that Diddy is horrendously gimpable in general IMO. Just remember what your lingering moves are and hover around the general area where he'll recover to. Just get the timing right and generally you can hit him out of his rocketbarrel pack. It is pretty unsafe as Cloud though (Since Diddy's pack could go out of control directly into you, gimping you. This has happened to me atleast once as other poor recovering characters.), but I'd definitely recommend Limit Cross Slash since it's overall a pretty safe, powerful option in my experience.
