I don't play with music on, as it helps my ability to hear certain aspects of the game (fastfalling, teching, etc). While I am aware it a case by case basis, but is it generally legal for the sound to be turned off during a match?

It shouldn't really matter. I've never seen it officially requested, as the game music shouldn't really get in the way, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable about rulesets might have the answer.

Its not a huge issue, I'm not going to act like Chris Chan just because I can hear the sick jams of FD. It'd just be nice.

It's probably fine. It's like when people ask to back out of the menu to turn on their rumble.
I can't really imagine the sort of person who would be like
"no you're gonna play with the music and you're gonna like it you scrub"
