Smashboards Rankings Update #1 : Ranking Purpose, Changes and Recruitment

Greetings, @ Gunla Gunla here, Smashboards Moderator and member of the Smashboards Rankings Staff. We have once again updated our rankings system to include some more features, and some other updates like positions for Smashboards Rankings. I’m going to give a rundown of the full Rankings Update! Without further ado, let’s rock!

Rankings Basics: We are aware that there is occasionally some confusion on how exactly are rankings are calculated, and what their purpose is. This section serves to alleviate that! Our rankings system works by allotting a certain number of points to events. We do this by placing them into categories (more on that in a bit), and players will get a certain amount of points based upon their ranking in the event. We calculate the player’s average of their top 10 events in a 12 month period, and that results in their rank. Please note that this value is...

The Events system on Smashboards has received an overhaul tonight! Much of the functionality you're familiar with is still here, but in a much easier to use way, both for event organizers and people in attendance.

You can still find Monthly and Weekly views of upcoming events by visiting the Events section. One of the new features however, is you can visit the Events Settings page and choose to filter the events by game, and also by their location relative to you.

When submitting an event, you will find a lot of similar fields to fill out such as the Title, Description and venue. You will also now find a field specifically for an address to use for a Google Maps display, as well as for the distance based filtering system. The specific address is not required, and can be left blank if you so choose and will...

The Hit Pause Option Select is a very useful technique that requires utmost precision, but it pays off with great options for all types of scenarios.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, dash dancing was one of the game's most useful techniques. It was an important part of the neutral game that allowed for spacing mindgames. However, it was changed in Brawl and random tripping hindered its usefulness. Dash dancing is back once again in Smash 4, and it can be combined with fox trotting to maximize its effectiveness. Join My Smash Corner as they teach Extended Dash Dancing/Dance Trotting!

But in Smash 4, everyone has a free-fall animation because of Pac-man's up-special! After falling through Pac-man's trampoline, all characters go into free-fall whether they can do it naturally or not. To see these "rare" free-falls in action, watch this video by Beefy Smash Doods!

Last weekend, I had the good fortune of being able to go to APEX 2015. It was, simply put, awesome. Watching players from all around the world compete on the big screen with hundreds of other Smash fans is an experience I won't soon forget. Melee? Great. Smash 4? Amazing. Even 64 got its share of the limelight. But as some of the later Smash 4 matches rolled around, the event slowed to a crawl.

So you're a Brawl player trying to hold their own in Project M. You've got the new fundamentals mastered. You've adjusted to the increase in gameplay speed. Wavedashing is easy peezy. SHFFL'ing is a piece of cake. Ledge hogging gives you more invincibility. Blah blah blah. You get it. However, there are still several Melee mechanics that you probably weren't aware of that exist in Project M. Let's take a look at few techniques that you can use to level up your Project M game.

Sit down, sonny. There's still much for you to learn.

Recap (1).png

Welcome everyone to another year of PMRank! PMRank is a panel-based Power Ranking of the Top 50 Project+ players in North America. We're excited to put together another list of the best performers throughout the 30+ eligible events this year, covering Exodus 2023 through Honeypot 6. Initially, 76 players were qualified to be ranked based on their placings and attendance at major Project+ events throughout 2023. Panelists were tasked with reviewing this data and ranking each player in order, from #1 to #76. For each player, the highest and lowest rankings on all panelists’ lists were removed when averaging votes to reduce variance. After an initial ballot, panelists were given time to discuss the aggregated results and move closer to consensus in the case of players with high standard deviations. Then...

Do we still need IRL Melee Tournaments?
  • 5
  • 0
The release of Project Slippi, the rollback-enabled netplay option for Super Smash Bros Melee, has opened up the possibilities for online tournaments. Project Slippi enables nearly-lagless online play across internet connections, with little regard to the actual internet speed of each competitor. This demands the question: do we still need Melee tournaments to be held in-person?

In order to start this conversation concisely and with precision, I’ll list out the negatives of the two most obvious options - in-person tournaments on traditional Melee setups versus online tournaments on Project Slippi setups. There are alternatives in-between these two, but beginning with binary options allows for a common reference point.

Issues with In-person tournaments
  • Will be delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic
  • Requires travel, resources and housing for players at long...
