One of the weirdest parts of modern platform fighter discourse is the notion that "Nintendo has the most iconic cast of characters" which is just... what??? How do I even begin on that? Even the mascot Pokemon and hyper-iconic 3Ps (Cloud, Steve, Sonic, Pac-Man) are specs in the public conciousness compared to characters like Superman and Garfield.

Honestly, if I was to pin down any reason for why platform fighters don't tend to catch mainstream audiences, it's just because most platform fighter devs are content with not being a major, active title and thus, don't go in, or even avoid, the directions that would ensure what we think of in the modern age as "success".

Honestly Multiversus' roster, for all of the game's faults, chokeslams Nintendo in terms of "most iconic characters". If you narrow it down to "most iconic characters in gaming" the argument for Nintendo gets stronger, but yeah
