Given that Wichita has "retired" from smash, I've decided to take charge of the PR thread from Mr. Doom. I have plans for this that I will outline tentatively. I was thinking of having a combination of:

- An Elo system
- An In-State Panel
- An Out of State Panel

The purpose of this list is to promote competition in Kansas and encourage participation in tournaments. I hope to keep this updated from now on or until someone decides that they want to do the project in my stead.

If you have interests in serving on either panel or maintaining the Elo rankings, PM me or post about it in this thread. I intend to start keeping track of rankings and results starting at the beginning of 2012. Ideally I would like to get a Pre-Season ranking up in December to help generate hype for the coming year. We'll probably end up doing two 6 months seasons for the year.

The REAL Official Kansas Brawl Power Rankings (Updated 1/5/2011)

[collapse="2010 Rankings"]

Someone suggested that I started doing something like this, and since it has a lot to do with numbers, I kindly accepted.

The purpose of this list is to promote competition in Kansas and encourage participation in out-of-city tournaments. I hope to keep this updated from now on.

If you're curious about the type of system I used, please refer to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system
For an easier time reading, please refer to how MTG does it: http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/article/9198.html

In short, here is how it works.
shamelessly stolen from the Texas Power Rankings
  • The list is extremely dynamic based on recent tournament results. It tries to stay as up-to-date as possible. The list is updated after EVERY tournament (please email me TIO files).
  • Players are rated based on head-to-head battles for any given tournament. They are not based off placings (1st, 2nd, 3rd), as this is not necessary.
  • Everyone starts at 1600 points. This is considered the average score.
  • You gain points for beating someone in tournament. If s/he has more points than you, you'll gain more points. If s/he has less points, you'll gain fewer points.
  • You lose points for losing to someone in tournament. If s/he has more points than you, you'll lose fewer points. If s/he has less points, you'll lose more points.
  • Not going to a tournament means you will not gain or lose points; you'll stay the same. This will explain why some future inactive players will still be ranked decently high.
  • Only Brawl Singles are counted for ratings. Teams, Low-Tier, etc will not be counted.
  • One must be a Kansas resident in order to qualify for the Kansas Power Rankings.

Eventually, I will separate the placings by tiers, as stated below.
  • S Tier: x ≥ 1900
  • A Tier: 1900 > x ≥ 1800
  • B Tier: 1800 > x ≥ 1700
  • C Tier: 1700 > x ≥ 1500
  • D Tier: 1500 > x ≥ 1300
  • E Tier: 1300 > x ≥ 1000
  • F Tier: x < 1000
Where "x" is the amount of points one has.
Tier list is subject to change.

But, for now, since there aren't that many players on this tier list, I'll just simplify things.

Current as of 1/5/2011

The tournaments in bold were added in this update.

Reasons Your Rating is Wrong

(1) Your rating fluctuates a lot. (uses Magic the Gathering lingo)
You should look at your rating since SLASTv1 occurred. Has it gone up and down a lot? If it has been steadily going in one direction, it probably means that your rating still hasn't caught up to your current level of skill. However, if it jumps up and down a lot, then your rating probably isn't a very good indicator of skill. Good players can do horribly in tournaments and bad players can win them. This will cause ratings to fluctuate. In higher K-value events, this phenomenon is even more pronounced. For example, I rarely play limited games, and my rating sat at 1625 for 1 whole year while I did not play a single limited match. Later, I played in a 16K tournament, and went 4-0 against 1900 rated players. So my rating went up about 50 points in a single day. Is it because I am really good and should be rated much higher? No - swings this large do not well represent my actual play still. In this case I happened to play against the 4 highly rated players at the tournament, while the rest of the players had similarly poor ratings as my own. Through their drafting mistakes, I somehow wound up with a ridiculous deck that crushed my more-talented opposition.

(2) The average skill of the players in your area can dramatically affect your rating. (uses Magic the Gathering lingo)
Consider the extreme example where all the players at your local tournaments have a 1600 rating, because they have just started playing live tournament magic. However, they are good at the game from playing WiFi, so their play skill is typical of an 1800 player. After this group of players has played against each other for a few dozen tournaments, their ratings would all still be at 1600, despite their skill level. Remember, your rating actually represents your win expectation relative to those around you, not necessarily to the entire magic community.

I hope this list encourages players from Kansas to try to be the best.

This is good, since now no one can complain about unfair voting, strictly just the numbers. Can't really argue with that (you can, but then you're just an *******).

I kind of like this. But it sucks that I could beat 5 people in a tournament and not get any points because of them not being in Kansas.

And I guess you almost benefit if you lose a match to an out of state player (assuming you face more in state players in the backside) now.

Regardless, I'm ranked, I like this list. LOL.

Edit: LOLs at Zeton being E tier. Pahahahahahahah.

I designed the ranking system to include everyone who participates in any tournament, but I show only KS players in the power rankings. So, a KS player is awarded points for defeating an OoS player.

Furthermore, not including any wins against OoS players does not make sense, in my opinion. An extreme example: Player A may face all OoS players, so his/her score will remain at 1600, while Player B may face all KS players, so his/her score will fluctuate dramatically. If this continues to happen at every tournament, then Player A will see some results while Player B will not. Therefore, as I have said in my previous paragraph, I believe it is best to include OoS players in the equation, but not put them up on the power rankings.

Mr. Doom was planning this to happen the entire time. He baited Future then waited for the sig'able response. It was all a trap. A TRAP.

I better stay on this f****** list when I go to college. >:|
I've been telling everyone for MONTHS that Mr. Doom is broken in everything. Including life.

zeton at 16th eh?
well i think that's pretty gay, but who am i but a silly female trying to argue with MATHEMATICS?!?!

beating people who aren't from kansas should maybe be taken into account. if domo got first at a tournament but only played one kansas person, he wouldn't go up that much even though he won the whole tournament. i dunno. this seems to cause less drama, but also...seems wrong.

thank god i'm not from kansas :estatic:

I believe that is taken into account, or so Mr. Doom has stated, he just isn't listing non-Kansas people on the list, but he is tracking it for the sake of data.

SLASTv1 is the only tourney used so far. Any and all subsequent tourneys that Kansans participate in will count as well.

This is only based off of beating Kansas players?

EDIT: Lol @ Zeton being so low.

Toogood...

EDIT2: I actually do, "kind of" like this system tbh

We will have to see where things go from here on out.
