Hey Folks... sorry for the long delay in announcements.

After reviewing the summer schedule and the financial burden of putting on an event like this, we've decided that it would be best for the Airship team to postpone this event into the winter. This will make the summer schedule less crowded and allow our team to focus our energies promoting some other grassroots events.

Let me be clear, Airship is NOT canceled. We are just postponing it. We are investigating winter dates now with our venue and will be posting new dates as soon as we have something. Sorry for the inconvenience, but don't worry. We still intend to bring some great things to the Smash Community in 2010 and beyond.

The Airship is a national championship event taking place this July in Raleigh, North Carolina! Planned by community veterans M3D, Scav, & Youko to be a professional-quality event and partnered with The Escapist Magazine, Monster Energy Drink and other sponsors, The Airship is set to be the biggest and best event of the summer. Details below!

Venue
The Raleigh Convention Center
We’ve rented over 10,000 square feet of venue space for the event in this brand new facility located in the beautiful city of Raleigh. You can find more information about the venue here: http://www.raleighconvention.com/

Travel
By Air
The primary airport for the Raleigh area is RDU International (http://www.rdu.com/), with service from all major airlines. As a minor hub for East Coast-based flights, Raleigh is inexpensive to travel through by plane with competitive rates year-round. Bus service from the Airport to downtown Raleigh is just $2 (http://www.rdu.com/groundtrans/bustrain.htm), eliminating the need for expensive rides or excessive carpooling around the event date.

By Car
Raleigh sits on I-40, a major highway that connects the Outer Banks of North Carolina with the heart of the country to the West. Attendees coming from the North or South can use I-95 or I-85 to connect to I-40. The convention center is easily accessible by a single exit off I-40 and parking is free in the public lot adjacent to the venue, making travel by car easy and inexpensive.

By Train
The Raleigh train station is within walking distance of the convention center, just a few blocks away on West Cabarrus street, making travel by train a cheap option for players on the East Coast. Travel from Washington DC is only $75 and takes just six hours to arrive at the Raleigh station.

By Bus
The local bus station is also just a few blocks away from the convention center, with regular Greyhound service every day of the week. The R-Line (http://www.godowntownraleigh.com/get-around/r-line) is a completely free, eco-friendly bus service that circulates Raleigh on 10-15 minute intervals at each stop. This gives players freedom to choose the best price for a hotel and gives them access to a wide variety of food an entertainment within Raleigh for absolutely no cost.

Hotels
The Raleigh Marriott City Center is attached to the Convention Center by underground tunnel, giving players quick access to the venue should they choose to stay in downtown Raleigh. Due to proximity and Raleigh’s free bus service, there are also four other downtown hotels with easy access for players that do not travel by car to the event. Raleigh is also flanked by three major suburban areas within a short driving distance to the venue (Cary, Garner, Morrisville) that have discount hotels with incredibly affordable prices. Groups willing to go four-to-a-room are likely to find hotel accommodations for less than $10 a night per person.

I am currently working on a hotel discount. More details coming soon!

Food
Concessions will be available in the convention center with reasonable prices and easy access for attendees. Within a short walking distance of the venue, players also have access to Jimmy Johns, Starbucks, McDonald’s, a local deli, a local pub, sushi and Thai food and a restaurant inside of the Marriott Hotel. Raleigh’s free bus service also provides access to a wide variety of food options, particularly in the nearby Moore Square, a 5-minute bus ride from the venue.

Entertainment
Families attending the event may be happy to discover that Raleigh has a Kids Museum and a Museum of Natural Sciences that can be reached by bus service within a few minutes of the venue. There is also an IMAX theatre, for viewing big summer blockbusters on the big screen. Adult attendees can find a variety of bars, pubs and nightclubs in downtown Raleigh due to the presence of NC State University and the high concentration of young adults that live in Raleigh for jobs in its growing technology and financial industries. More information about Raleigh entertainment can be found here: http://www.godowntownraleigh.com/at-ease

Peter Spezia (Youko) – almost needs no introduction! Peter is a film and broadcasting student at the University of Michigan and the host and producer of Show Me Your News, a popular gaming podcast that has pulled in audiences of over ten thousand during its three-year history.

Equipment
The Airship is currently planning to rent 32 televisions for the main tournament room, covering the necessary stations to execute the Smash Bros events over the course of four days. We are happy to have you bring more TVs to help the tournament move along smoothly. We do need players to bring their Wiis and GameCubes, along with copies of the games and complete save files to make this tournament a success!

Equipment Incentive
The first 32 people to bring a Nintendo Wii and a copy of Super Smash Bros Brawl for the event to use will get Super Smash Bros 64 put on their Wii via Virtual Console purchase. That’s a ~1000-point/$10 value. Players that already have Smash Bros 64 on their Wii will get a 1000 point card for the Wii once they pick up their system on Sunday after the competitions are over.

Freeplay Room
We’ve rented a special room that will be run with power and set with tables and chairs specifically for free play. Players are free to bring their own set-ups for this room and play other games, host mini-tournaments (with staff approval) and have a good time. Be warned that this room MAY be used for side tournaments at the discretion of staff, so not every station may be available for free play all the time in this room.

Sponsors & Partnerships
The Airship is brought to you by an exciting and growing team of sponsors and partners!

Airship 2010 Goals

Professional Tournament Organization and Execution
This event is being planned and run by professionals, working from a realistic schedule that is executed properly. We will not allow major delays in the event schedule. We will not let the event get held up by top players who don’t think they have to show up on time. No special treatment for the few that hurts everyone else. We will keep our promises and stick to our rules.

A High-Quality, Professionally Produced Stream
With our partnership with The Escapist and Show Me Your News, players at the event can expect top-notch reporting on their efforts. Fans at home can expect an excellent, completely free online experience of the event. We won’t force you to watch a bunch of random friendlies or hours of downtime. When the event is going, the stream will be live and packed with good content.

Community Growth
Our media plan, professional execution and growing partnerships will help bring new audiences to the world of competitive Smash Bros and attract new players to events all over the world.

Community Involvement
We can’t be successful without YOU! We need you to come to the event, provide equipment, tell your friends, volunteer to help, watch the stream live and participating in our giveaways and contests. Without the Smash community, this event is nothing. Please help us make it the biggest and best Smash event ever.

Fun for Everyone
Even if you aren’t a top player, you can have a blast and get a great experience at The Airship. We’ll have sponsor booths, raffles, special events, side tournaments, free play and more. And if you can’t be there in person, the live stream will not only be great entertainment, but might also include some giveaways that you can participate in.

Super Smash Bros MeleeSingles & Doubles
The fast-paced and exciting second game in the Smash franchise, Melee was the foundation of the grassroots tournament scene and continues to host big events to this day. We will be playing this game on either GameCube or Nintendo Wii systems, based on the available hardware.

Rules & more information coming soon

Super Smash Bros BrawlSingles & Doubles
The latest and highest-selling Smash game, Brawl is currently helping the grassroots community grow both in live events and through online play! Brawl will be played on Nintendo Wii systems.

Rules & more information coming soon

Super Smash Bros World Cup
The World Cup is a special event conceived just for The Airship! Since other events this summer are bound to host crew battles for one game or another, we decided to try something entirely new and exciting. Here’s how it works:

- Each region will elect a captain (pending approval by Airship staff) that will select their team of five.
- Since teams will be smaller, regions will be smaller as well. We should have the official regions up in March SO STAY TUNED!
- Teams will compete against other regions in a “Super Set” comprised of all three Smash games. A Super Set is 2 games of Brawl, 2 games of Melee and 1 game of Smash 64 played in this order: Brawl, Melee, 64, Melee, Brawl
- Before the match, the team captain will deliver a roster to the referee with players listed as either Brawl 1, Brawl 2, 64, Melee 1 or Melee 2. Each player on the five-man team will compete against the corresponding player on their opposing team in their listed game.
- Each match-up will be a Best of 3 set using the standard singles tournament rules for its respective game.
- The first team to win 3 matches wins the Super Set and the round.

This system tests our regions not just in a single game, but their overall skill in all three Smash titles. One player can’t carry the entire team and being dominant in just a single game isn’t good enough to win the event. Any region can put together the tools across all three games for a shot at winning the World Cup.

Schedule
Thursday, July 22 - 9:00PM Eastern
World Cup Pool Selection – LIVE on the stream

Friday, July 23 – 9:00 PM Eastern
World Cup Pools

Sunday, July 25 – 10:00 AM Eastern
World Cup Bracket (Finals around 12:00 PM Eastern)

Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul SilverUnrestricted Doubles, Standard Singles, Little Cup
The newest games in the Pokemon franchise hit the US this March and will be included as official games at The Airship. These events will make great side-events for players that don’t want to compete in some of the available Smash events or Pokémon players looking to assert their dominance in the Smash community.

Events
- Unrestricted Doubles – will be similar to Nintendo’s official events, using a double-battle format and allowing players to use their captured legendaries in competition.
- Standard Singles – using a standard competitive battling format of singles, 1v1, with some legendary and otherwise too powerful Pokémon banned.
- Little Cup – is a simple and fun battling format that almost anyone can prepare for quickly and easily. Players use Pokémon under level 5 and that are able to evolve and not from a short ban list. Some moves and items are banned as well.

Rules, schedule and more details coming soon

Cosplay Contest
The Airship will be hosting a cosplay contest on Friday, July 23. The rules are listed below:

I. Date, Time & Location
Friday, July 23rd
The exact time will be announced once the schedule is set.
The contest will either take place on the main stage or in the main hall, depending on space.

II. Contest and Awards

We will be giving awards for:

1) Best in Show
2) Second Place
3) Third Place
4) Crowd Favorite

The first three will be decided based on scoring in the following three categories:

1) Craftsmanship – how well the costume is put together. Good materials sewn together will score higher than an outfit pulled together from someone's laundry hamper. This category specifically refers to how well the costume is made, as well as hair, accessories and props.
2) Accuracy – how well the participant captured the character. Did the judge look at you and say, "My god, he looks exactly like a fat, hairy, Italian plumber"? Also, this refers strictly to the costume, not the cosplayer. So, if you’ve always wanted to dress as Princess Peach, your gender will not count against you. Your facial hair might, though.
3) Presentation – weighted less than the first two categories, but this still plays a role. Presentation is based on how you present yourself, pose and even talk while on stage. If it's an impeccable impression of the character, you will score well.

The top three scorers will be announced as winners at the end of the contest.

The Crowd Favorite will be decided by crowd response. Simply put, the cosplay that gets the most cheers wins. So even if you're not entering, get out there and yell for your friends
III. Eligibility

The Airship Cosplay Contest is open to everyone.

Entrants 13 and under must have their parents' permission to enroll, and must be accompanied by a legal guardian or relative of age while at the event.

All costumes must be either a First Party Nintendo character or have made an appearance in a Super Smash Bros. Game. This includes trophies, pokeballs and assist trophies, so go nuts. If you are not sure if your costume idea is eligible, feel free to ask one of the event coordinators.

IV. How to Enter

Come by the Cosplay Signup Table starting at 2:00 on the day of the contest. There will be periodic announcements throughout the day reminding our intrepid cosplayers that signups are open.

To sign up, you will be asked to write down your name, the name of your character, and the game your character is from. If your character has several different "looks" on different games (for instance, Mario in a Tanooki Suit vs Mario in a Bumble Bee Suit), please let us know which game that specific look is from. That's it!

Signups close thirty minutes before the contest begins.

There will be a maximum of 40 slots.

Group signups are allowed and encouraged. If you are signing up as a group, please have all of your names and information ready at the same time. Groups may have up to 6 people.

V. Costume Guidelines

You must have a costume. Sorry. If you're dressing up as a character that wears blue jeans and a Tshirt, then you need to come up with a better idea. Have some fun.

Keep things PG-13 at most. The Airship is a family-friendly environment, and the staff reserves the right to disqualify costumes based on this. The "minimum" amount of coverage is a bikini. Thongs are only allowed if covered by shorts, a skirt, a cape, etc.

This also means no offensive language and no sexual humor.

Regarding Weapons:
Real weapons are not allowed. Prop weapons may be used, but absolutely no sharp edges are permitted. In addition, please do not bring any props made of metals, hard woods or industrial plastics. Soft woods, such as balsa wood, or light rattan are acceptable building materials. You also can't go wrong with cardboard.

ALL points on weapons must be soft, such as with foam or fabric.

Finally, do not use any props that can shatter, especially glass.

The Airship Staff reserves the right to refuse entry to any props deemed unsafe.

VI. Stage Rules

Once the contest begins, each entrant is allowed to walk on stage, strut and pose for 30 seconds. Please only get on stage when the announcer calls your name or the name of your group.

Everything that goes on stage with you must come off stage with you. Please avoid objects like confetti, glitter, rose petals, liquids, etc that would end up getting left on stage. Also, no food or animals.

When showing your moves, please don't throw or fire anything into the crowd. These are grounds for disqualification, and possibly eviction from the entire event.

Stage Fighting:
One foot must be on the floor at all times. So, no jumping, backflipping or wavedashing.

VI. Prizes
Prizes are TBD, but will include some cool schwag from our sponsors.

Contests
The Airship will be hosting a series of contests leading up to the event. Our first contest starts in March, so keep watching this space for more details!

Viiiiiiirg! You'd better!

For a moment, I thought Nicholas1024 had read it as "brawl and mafia at the same time." Which, granted, would be amazing. But a LITTLE tricky to pull off.
