17 Reasons Isai May Not Win Genesis 3

Joel "Isai" Alvarado. A retired legend in Melee and a master of Smash 64. Known as possibly the greatest Smash 64 player ever to play competitively when it was announced he would be entering Genesis 3 many assumed he would place 1st. This may very well not be the case.

With some research and digging we have compiled 17 reasons Isai may not win Genesis 3. Some are hard facts, others speculation, but all together show the odds may not be as stacked in his favor as previously expected. What players could pose a problem and what other issues may hold him back from success? Let's find out and learn a bit about the Smash 64 community along the way!!

---

1. He's using Donkey Kong
  • DK is currently ranked in C tier at 9th on the Smash 64 Tier List. While all characters can be used in the game as it is well balanced when coming up against some of the greatest players in the world using top tier characters DK may let him down.
2. Low tiers have failed him before
  • At Apex 2012 Isai used Link and placed 2nd. Apex 2013 with Mario: 2nd. While Apex 2014 he saw success with Jigglypuff (higher than DK on the tier list) it shows that against the very best, low tiers can let him down.
3. SuPeRbOoMfAn
  • One of the only players to have a winning record against Isai in tournament, SuPeRbOoMfAn is generally considered among the very best in the entire world at the game. Having been the reason Isai has taken 2nd place several times before, he could very well be the reason it happens again.
4. Wario
  • If SuPeRbOoMfAn sounded like a name to take down Isai, how about the player who outplaced him in a tournament? Wario has placed 1st at the last two Smash 64 nationals in Japan (outplacing SuPeRbOoMfAn at one) and is considered the best Pikachu in Japan. Thanks to the Genesis 3 Compendium he's coming to America for the first time and is a big name Isai would have to get through to win the event.
5. Inactivity
  • Netplay with friends and grinding at home can only do so much and even the Smash 64 master needs to enter events to always be at the very top of his game. With his last major attended being Apex 2014, a bit over two years ago, is he ready for such big competition?.
6 Viva Mexico!
  • Mexico is coming in full force with their finest players for Genesis 3. Isai will have to battle through threats like Mariguas, JaimeHR, Dext3r, and tacos many of whom were able to attend thanks to the Smash 64 player fund.

Kikoushi vs Isai Grand Finals Apex 2013

7: Isai's Honor And Playing For Fun
  • At Apex 2013 Isai took second place to Kikoushi after being unable to take him down on Dreamland with Mario. He could have had a better chance to win had he counterpicked to another stage but refused to do so as in Japan Dreamland is always the only legal stage and he felt like it would be an unfair advantage. This and his notoriety to play for fun instead of always for the win may be a large deciding factor in the tournament.

8. Para La Gloria: Latin America
  • Latin America is sending six of their best to compete at Genesis 3 with many coming to the states for the first time thanks to the Smash 64 player fund. The Cafil crew has Jason and Lorenzo representing and top Brazilian threats Banze, Kort, and Rith are also coming. Chile's best player Shalaka is also attending and all may present a large wall to Isai winning the event.

9. Genesis 2
  • Don't remember Genesis 2? Well Isai placed 2nd using lower tiers (again). Will the pressure to set his record straight in the Genesis series get to him?

10. The Z
  • SuPeRbOoMfAn isn't the only Canadian who can play some serious Smash 64! The Z has places high in amnay events and at every tournament SuPeRbOoMfAn isn't attending in Canada, The Z is bringing home the 1st place prize.

11. Wizzrobe
  • A major threat in Smash 4 as well as Melee, Wizzrobe is also one of the best Smash 64 players sporting a powerful Yoshi. While he'll be spread out between many events at Genesis 3 if he's playing on point he'll be dangerous.

12. KeroKeroppi
  • Placing within the top 5 in three separate majors this year, KeroKeroppi is looking to do just as well at Genesis 3. Despite not being able to break through the wall that is SuPeRbOoMfAn he still is incredibly skilled and may be able to take out Isai's DK with using his higher tiered Kirby.

13. LD
  • One of the best Fox players in North America, LD had placed top eight at too separate majors this year and is looking to start off 2016 just as strong. Could this powerful Fox be enough to take down Isai's DK?

14. Hyrule Castle Banned
  • This stage, notorious for being one of Isai's favorites, is not legal at Genesis 3. He made famous the Greenhouse Combo and the little green hut on the stage is known as "Isai's House". While it could still be allowed with a gentleman's pick, lacking his favorite stage for the big matches may harm him.

15. Bark Sanchez
  • This one may seem a bit more odd, but Bark Sanchez does have something going for him. Making a huge splash in the 64 scene when he upset KeroKeroppi and almost causing another upset against JaimeHR. Alongside his strong performance at Hitstun 3, this frequenter of Xanadu has shown he's got some serious skills and can adapt to even the best players at high level play and he may be an underdog who could take out Isai.
16: The Land Down Under: Australia
  • SSBPete is coming to the states for the very first time thanks to the Smash 64 player fund and he is the best Australia has to offer for Smash 64. He's someone no one has really faced in the states and may have tricks up his sleeve that have never been seen before.

17. Wangera
  • A name that even those who follow Smash 64 always do not recognize, Wangera is the best Jigglypuff in Japan. Rest is powerful and Jigglypuff has amazing combos in 64 that could be a problem for Isai's DK.

---

As it is plain to see this will be one of the most stacked tournaments for Smash 64 of all time and there are many obstacles in Isai's way if he expects to win. Hopefully this has been a great chance to learn about the Smash 64 community and has readers knowledgeable and excited for Genesis 3!

Still think that Isai will come out on top after reading our 17 reasons? Let us know in the comments below and be sure check out articles on the threats from Australia, from Mexico and Latin America attending Genesis 3 to learn about talent attending from overseas for the event.

Donkey Kong IS the worst character he could have chosen. He has had better luck with Link and Puff, but DK is just not going to fare well with him.

Might as well give Isai the option to pick a DK with a special skin that is white with a red bullseye on its back.

Smashboards title says "20 reasons why Isai may not win Genesis 3"
*clicks title*
now it says "17 reasons why Isai may not win Genesis 3"
wut.

I hope Isai will do well... DK may not be the best choice, but imagine the excitement if he does really well with him!

Isai doesn't care about any of this, or he wouldn't be using DK in the first place.

So if he doesn't care, why should we? He's never really tried to win in singles even in his melee days, with the exception of one or two events here and there. Isai has never been about winning tournaments, and more about pushing the game as far as it can go, and creating the sickest possible combos in the universe. (Pretty hyped to see some DK combos at genesis)

Doesn't change the fact that he's still the GOAT of smash64 no matter what he does :p

SuperBoomfan is NOT the best at ssb64. If he ever had to play isais pikachu he would get absolutely destroyed and I would put a thousand dollars on that if I had the money to spare. Isai is the worlds best hands down at this game.

I know I know. Its stating the obvious but hey its isai and i'm showing some love

Not cool dude, you are being rude and mean to one of the most respected writers on smashboards.

No he's not. He's pointing out that this guy is publishing articles without proofreading. It's unprofessional, and insulting to anyone with a moderate grasp of the language.

Then again, I wouldn't call smashboards blogs a professional writing endeavor so it is kind of nitpicking. Meh

it makes the community looks like a buncha ******* when "one of the most respected writers on the site" doesnt proofread his work.

I don't even particularly care that Isai may not win. He's always fun to watch, he switches up who he uses and he has fun playing. I am interested to see how he plays knowing that Hyrule Castle is off the table though.
