All of Socal's areas should plan to come together for at least one tournament

I believe it'd be really beneficial for socal to plan to come together and have at least one really large local tournament. There's 818/805/SB/SD/949/626 and other random people scattered everywhere, but there's no coordination between them, and this leads to ****ing mini-tournaments all over the place. I find it hard to believe that with some planning, we can't get a 40~50 man tournament.

I know we're not as active as we have been, but c'mon, this is ****ing socal, not the midwest. If we get a location in the middle, it isn't more than a 2 hour drive for most areas. Yes, I know people will have conflicting schedules and other johns, but that's where the whole planning thing comes in lol. Everyone can figure out how to put aside their obligations for one weekend, go to a large sized tournament, and play people they haven't played in ages. I'm not even talking about regional status, or getting norcal to come down; lets just try and get socal to come out of the woodwork and meetup for the first time in a long while.

Yeah, I agree. I think it should be planned about 2 months ahead of time, well-advertised, and in a decent venue. Socal is really uncoordinated :/

To expand on the first post: each area has kind of receded into their own bubble. There's smash going on in each area as far as I can tell, but no one really gets out there and goes to stuff. There's about 1 or 2 cars that actually travel out of area semi-frequently (sung's and mine), but the rest are basically random.

This is our chance to get the newer people exposed to the other areas in socal, and to see matches that have never happened or haven't happened in forever, because seeing the same 10-15 faces at tournaments every other saturday gets old! And not once have I heard a negative thing about getting exposed to as many play styles as possible. It's a win-win so long as we put in the effort to make it happen.

@sung: SB is pretty far from everyone lol. There's a reason I said it should be in the middle. That's the most realistic chance we have of getting this to go down.

Then I recommend LA, no, not because I live there, but actually, yes, yes it is.

What other players does socal even have besides the 15 people we see all the time

haha yes SB hype, it could really be awesome plus crash at my place.

But also this thread is true, during the summer I can host tournaments and I'll be in the 818 next to pasadena so that should be a pretty good hub. Hopefully we all get super good at that time

Haha, when I started wanting to go to tournaments in SoCal and trying to find weeklies to go to I mapped out the SoCal regions. I found out that I live like exactly in the middle of everything aka away from everything.

You should all come to me. :p

You know, for all the **** given to midwest, they hosted two 100+ man tournaments this year (Big House and SMYM) and have had numerous 60+ events. As far as I can tell, they are much more organized than Socal; Socal is amazing with all the little weekly tournaments, but hasn't really got it together as far as hosting nationals or large regionals.

Which is a shame because a national in Socal could probably crack 300.

Super Happy Fun Time had a pretty good turnout, and I never see those people at any locals except Festizzio's, it'd be great to have them leave their area for once. SD used to show up 5-8 people strong regularly, back last year. Irvine can have 10 people or more, depending on whether people wanna drive. Pomona/Moval just needs a driver, and I'm sure they could get a full car out to tournies. When SB shows up, they usually bring a full car. If we planned this well enough, we could maybe get norwalk to actually come to something, with all of their amazing players LOL. Also, there are random people who just show up to tournaments whenever they feel like it. Emerican/Boss/A rookie are all examples of that. Hosting a big tournament could actually get these people to come out from under their rocks.

Basically, we have the numbers, we just need the conditions to be right, and we need to advertise to each area.

Champ has the venue to do it so you can just ask Champ to do it beside he's going to run a tournament on a Thursday Night:

(Poster is done by me btw and shameless promotion! LOL)

so there is a chance to ask Champ to make a day for just melee but you guys have to be sure that a total of 30 or 40 something people shows up. Not like 15 people of the same faces.

If there's going to be one huge local tournament: I can bring one or two people from the MVC2 Community to enter since they wanna try at a tournament.

I know it's not fair to compare the smash community with the FGC but this is just an example:
Like if you look at Wednesday Fight Night (SSF4 AE/MVC3/SF3) they have like about 150 something people for each game and the TO had to capped it at 64 players for MVC3, SF3 & SSF4 since it's way too many. It's so bad that there's another huge line outside of the arcade like another group of 50 something people outside while there's like 100 something people. It's a weekly tournament too. =/

C'mon this is ****ing Southern California! SMASH can do this too! With about 30 to 50 people per tournament! Home of the strongest region in the ****ing world and also many great players like MaNg0, LuCKy, S2J, HugS, Lovage, MacDaddy69, Ken, DEHF and many other great players! We can do it like pre -Genesis2 time where me, stab and the rest of Irvine drove to UCSD for a 20-30 something man tournament every 2 weeks! 2010 I remember there was like at least 30 people playing at almost every tournaments as well.

East Coast, Midwest, the South and many other regions ain't got **** on us!

Ignoring the massive hyperbole for the attendance numbers, WNF is a great example. It actually started out in a garage and barely got 10 people a week (and this is SFIV era). They gradually got bigger and bigger, and advertised things through their stream. They eventually hosted a national (called Socal regionals) that they advertised the **** out of, got a bunch of new players to show up to that, and then told them about the WNF weeklies.

We can literally do the same thing. Smash is so damn popular. And you don't even need to buy a 100 dollar stick.

(as far as other regions go, I'd say quite a few regions are outperforming socal, despite socal having more players. Tristate is getting 60 people at their locals. Florida is getting 40 and growing. EC Canada is between 40 and 60 at monthlies.

The fact of the matter is, the number 1 way to get new players is to host a national. Scrubs come out of the woodwork when they hear a 300+ man tournament is in their area.)

Even I watch WNF and I don't even play those games competitively...I think it's the fact that they have a really nice stream to watch EVERY week and people go there so they can play on the stream too and whatnot

I feel like the people in tournament are the only people who go on smashboards as well, I dunno, we had a socal regional (road to apex) and that turned out absolutely amazing.

The input of the other areas, to find a good date/location.
i think if you really wanna do something you should just do it.

people want to be led. be the leader. the leader doesnt ask for permission, he just does it. and people follow cuz thats what people do.

build it and they will come etc

Only the dedicated players are still willing to go to tournaments! Melee is almost ten years old, so it's pretty tough bringing in new people when you have fresh fighting games like SSFIVAE and MvC3! Hell, those games are getting updates next month! Also, life pretty much kicks in and you gotta know where your priorities are!

I 100% agree with Miguel here!

it's true! Melee is ten year old game and Nintendo doesn't do **** to support the smash community at all. Like no new characters DLC, no characters balances patches, no new stages etc. Can't keep the game fresh sadly but hey look at Super Street Fighters II Turbo it's still going on even tho it's like 20 years old and people still play the **** out of that game in Japan, of course there's still tournaments like MANIAX, SBO etc. So Melee got this!

Games like SSF4 AE get like new patches every 8 months? Like that New 2012 Ver. update, the new UMvC3 with new characters, stages etc coming out next month.

Plus if smash wanna get up there, today tournaments has to have sick *** looking stream like this:

(made by me again LOOOOL because the KOF Community ask me to do this rough draft)

*HD video recording - Has to look crisp at all times. (Not the one that me and Stab has.)
*Player Cam - So they can see who does Stab looks like...they'll be like "Check out that guy's swag"
*Salt Cam - Secretly show the clips of someone throwing a fit after they lose
*The Xsplit Streaming Program - it's what two videos, the players cam and the gameplay (Which currently I'm teaching myself how to use it so I can teach it to Stab once I have it down)
*Better Commentary - Because no one is going to enjoy hearing less known/knowledge players talking and makes dumb jokes. Someone like MacD/Lovage/S2J/Mango/Stab is perfect because they're a mix of pulling good jokes/knowledge about the game. Giving background info about the players is a huge plus because people wanna know who are they etc. (Shoutout to Dendy for doing this) Here's the cold hard fact: Commentary is not for everyone
*Hype - I don't need to explain this at all
*Local tournaments must be streamed at all times - Yes, this is a huge hassle to set up but it has to be done. I don't like setting up streams but this is a huge plus to the community. Let people know that there's a smash scene/tournaments in their area.

I know most people are broken but I can help Stab get the Xsplit program and he can have me teach him or just teach himself to use it but I can design the stream image for him if he wants to help the smash community to get started somehow. C'MON SOCAL

I forgot to mention this too but ****ing WNF gets to be on G4TV when clockwork shows up =/ but **** them we don't need that ****. We got the internet and that's more than enough for us.

Yo Atlus the one of the KOF Community (He's a staff memeber of SCR) wants me to be a Staff member of SoCal Regionals but I declined

I was thinking of making the investment to get some good equipment and getting some good quality streams, but I hardly go to tournies anymore and tournament attendance has been declining! There hasn't been enough new people coming into the scene for a while now!

You really can't blame Nintendo for not supporting the tournament scene because I'm sure they weren't expecting one to grow out of the Smash series! Our community also doesn't have an inside man like Seth Killian that can get the our words to the higher ups!

I think Apex is gonna give us a really good idea where smash is right now! This is why I'm sponsoring Mexico's flight to Apex because I feel it's like a final tournament to really show what this community can bring! However, I don't think smash is going to completely die out! There is always gonna be THAT ONE major tournament in the year that everyone is gonna wanna go! I'm sure attendance is gonna bloom once the next smash game comes out, whether the game sux or not!

Also, I'm gonna get into KOFXIII for a bit since being Mexican gives me an edge!

I'd be down to come all the way down somewhere to get some experience. As long as it's organized and I can plan ahead it would be awesome. I'd love to get some more experience from tournaments.

Lets make it happen Socal!
