While not 100% clear right down to the very fine point like a measurement would be (6'1"), it is not unreasonable to say that "Compared to every other smasher, M2K is the most skilled player based off of repeated tournament results that are unmatched by any other player."

Why is this a pretty safe assumption?

As explained before, the definition of skill when applied to Brawl is simply "the ability to play brawl well". Even under the current competitive ruleset that defines how we "play brawl", it is possible to play brawl well, just not under tournament conditions (which is what you are trying to use to measure skill). This is why I state that ability to play Brawl well exists independently of the raw ability to win, factoring in performance as a variable gives a more accurate formula for results. Under this new formula, skill is not objectively quantifiable.

No I'm not, it's entirely possible (though almost certainly extremely improbable). However, if you can't measure what the absolute limit of their raw skill is in the first place, how could you ever tell if they were performing 100% of it?

And even if you knew they were, it would take too many tournament placings at 100% to determine how they're skill can be quantified in relation to others, since other players performance varies too. In effect, it would take most of the players performing 100% over many tournaments to form an accurate quantification.

And since you can't know how much percent they are performing to, it doesn't really matter anyway.

Nothing is really objective, but relative to some assumption you can treat things as objective. Like we assume that the things we see, touch etc are there and observations based on that assumption are generally considered objective. That said if we agree on what the goal a tournament is, then whatever we choose based on that assumption can not be argued against (assuming our reasoning is right) and only the assumption itself can be contested, but since it is so arbitrary it should be determined by popular vote. After all, competition is only competition if people play the game and generally more people equals more competition.

Because it's simply not true. Just ask any player if they feel like they're playing up to 100% of their capability on any given day. I guarantee you will almost never get a yes. And that 1/1000 times isn't enough to make any quantifications on (see previous post).

It's ridiculous to contend that every time you play "well" or "poor", your skill level is actually changing rapidly and fluctuating. Rather, it's just how much of your skill you're performing. As a YGO player who's been to 100-man+ regionals (tournament starts ~10AM and lasts into the afternoon with finals taking place in the evening, at a rate of 8 rounds, 40 minutes per round [and change, due to overtime and having to print out pairings each round] plus one finals round for Top 8)...

...I don't see what's so bad about Swiss-format Smash tournaments. Is it the number of setups required since people aren't being eliminated, or what?
