Best Gamecube Controller Controls?

Hey guys, I wanted to bring this up for some help. With the GC controller I am having trouble doing short hop aerials and fastfalling with the controls. I tried setting L, R, And Z to jump but had some issues. Both L and R toggle buttons are too deep and getting a deep press is hard without accidentally full hopping. The Z button is kinda awkward and it seems only the second half of the button registers sometimes. Does anybody have any tips? I am willing to use default controls if it comes down to it but the inaccuracy and being unstationary tends to be a problem. Any insight is helpful! Cheers.
