has anyone seen the gameplay footage: capture the flag?

am i the only one that thinks that all the scenes were choreographed, cuz any average player could've killed that flag carrier on several occasions. mainly the rpg guy.

being able to throw knives looks sick

Yes.

It was for show.

Yup, altough the in-game host migration feature was the best thing in that video IMO.

I agree on the host migration, but the best thing I've seen was customizable kill streaks. Having the ability to choose how you want your ks's set up is going to be a major improvement over Cod4. Perhaps different ks set ups for different classes? Oooo that would be sick!

Only flaw I see is that certain ks's are going to be dominant over the others, like the AC130 or helicopter. If this turns out to be true then most people will be using the same ks layout as everyone else. Kinda how like 95% of cod4 players use stopping power, steady aim, deep impact, bandolier, etc.,while you hardly ever see anyone using sonic boom, double tap, or the least useful perk of all time... EAVESDROP!

I hope the perks are also more diverse this time around...

Enough of my rambling! We'll see what happens!

Don't worry I have complete faith in IW that they will balance out all of the different kill streaks. Their game will be balanced unlike some other FPS. *coughhalo3cough*

And the eavesdrop perk was only considered helpful or "good" before the party system that was introduced in the NXE update. Sure, it sounded like a good perk but you still have to be near your opponents to hear what they are saying.

Also, there will be a multiplayer reveal event in Los Angeles tomorrow.

"Landed in Los Angeles. 48 hrs w/ no sleep & no time to rest now. Our big multiplayer reveal event is tommorrow. Rehersals today. Can't wait!"

Irrelevant. This is a MW2 thread, not a "lets debate over the issues of modern FPS's not having enough innovation" thread. If you want to debate this, then make go make your own thread.
Ironic because the Call of Duty franchise hasn't done anything innovative since its release. Trey Arch basically proves this with WaW being set in WWII, again, even after the success of a Modern based FPS.

And another FPS franchise has done something innovative? It's hard to do something new when you make an FPS game. You shoot stuff/other people, you get shot at. The end.

Treyarch was just lazy and churned out another mediocre WWII game.

Any word on character customization guys? Not to the degree of Vegas but some customization would be nice. ;/

You're right it hasn't. CoD has stuck to the same formula and it has been working well enough. This could ultimately be its down fall though, because people will be getting tired of the same formula set in different time periods.

IW made a big change for the Call of Duty franchise with CoD4 by setting it in modern day events instead of the past. Something is going to have to change with IW's next game (after MW2) or else I fear CoD is going to turn into the next Tony Hawk and die out with its fans.

Lets take a look here. I put a slash trough all of they Treyarch titles because their games just aren't on the same level as IW's.

The old- CoD, CoD2, CoD3
The now- CoD4, CoD: WaW (wtf WW2 again?), MW2
The future- CoD 7 (rumored to be the Vietnam War, which is going to be a step back from MW2 in my honest opinion), ???

As you can see by the ?'s, that is where IW's next game will take place. Thanks to Treyarch, IW will definitely not be going back in time again, because after CoD7 and the success of IW's modern shooters, players will be tired of the old stuff. IW is now left with 3 choices-

1. Make yet another MW game. This is not a smart move assuming that the gamers will want something different from another modern setting.
2. Create CoD: Future Warfare. Honestly I don't like the idea, but it just might be the change that the series will need to see. However, with so many futuristic shooters out there, I think IW would have a rough time being original.
3. Do something that will take the series in a whole new direction. I like this idea the best. I'm not entirely sure how IW would be able to pull it off, but they need to get serious on what they are going to do or else the series will undoubtedly lose its appeal and die out.

EDIT- haha this is a funny post. MW2 (CoD6) isnt even out yet and I'm sitting here rambling on about CoD8... I need to go outside. :urg:

What it's not hard to do is come up with more than "Go from point A to point B, shoot anyone in your way, by the way the enemies have infinite numbers"

Like Crashic mentioned, Valve easily stepped out of line and made Portal and TF2, and at least Half-Life isn't set in the 1940's. There's a lot you can do with First Person games without having to make it about war, puzzles games like Portal are always a welcome break from "Nazis are bad."

Oh yeah, Bioshock too. Although that's less in the style of CoD type games considering it's an FPS RPG thing.

Portal.
Team Fortress 2.
Portal isn't a FPS. It's a single-player first-person action/puzzle video game.

Team Fortress 2 hasn't done anything that different. Other FPS's like Battlefield have different classes you can pick to play as. TF2 introduced cartoon style visuals.

That is all.

What you have basically described is Left 4 Dead, which is currently one of the more popular shooters. Last time I checked, it was purchased by valve during development was it not?

Once again I'm going to repeat that games don't huge change, innovation, and originality to achieve greatness.

It all comes down to polish, replay value, and most off all, fun.

"The controls haven’t changed, and it plays roughly the same as CoD4, but the new weapons, perks, and other additions have significantly increased the number of available strategies and techniques. Both offensive and defensive players should enjoy every match (especially capture-the-flag, which is a blast), and if you’re not the type to score a lot of kills, you’ll still have your chance to shine in objective matches (more on that later)."

"The maps we played were pretty similar to what you saw in CoD4 (with the possible exception of Highrise, which takes place at the top of an unfinished skyscraper), but none of them were ever dull. They’re crammed with choke points, sniping roosts, environmental weapons, and hidden paths, and they all maintain Infinity Ward's usual level of ambiance and factual accuracy."

"You knew there would be new perks, but you didn’t know how varied and powerful they’d be. And you probably didn’t know that they’d be upgradable. Each perk now has its own challenge which, when completed, unlocks the “pro” version. You won’t know what the pro version will do until you unlock it, but we can pretty safely assume it'll be worth it. Here are some of the new perks we saw:

Bling – Use two attachments on a weapon. No more choosing between the red dot sight and grenade launcher!
Scavenger – Auto-grab ammo from enemy corpses. This is great for maintaining a steady supply of grenades.
Commando – Increase melee range for those extra-lungey knife attacks."

"You can still only have three kill streak rewards at a time, but after level 10, you’ll start unlocking new rewards which you can use in place of the defaults. The new default rewards are:

UAV (3 kills) – Exposes enemy locations on your radar. This is the very same unmanned aerial vehicle from CoD 4. So what makes the perk different in Modern Warfare 2? They can be shot down. Actually, everything can be shot down.

Care Package (4 kills) – Throw down a special smoke grenade to call in an airdrop of goodies on your location. Your reward might be something simple, like an ammo refill, or something awesome, like an instant advanced kill streak. The catch is that everyone, including enemies, can see the packages location on their radar. This isn’t necessarily a drawback, however, as they can be used as bait for ambushes.

Predator Missile (5 kills) - Try not to hit yourself as you guide a fly-by-wire missile from the heavens to the ground. It’s very effective, and scores you an excellent view of your enemies’ positions for some bonus intel."

"You can still only have three kill streak rewards at a time, but after level 10, you’ll start unlocking new rewards which you can use in place of the defaults. The new default rewards are:

"Infinity Ward has introduced death streak rewards.

After three consecutive deaths with no kills, players are awarded a little bonus of their choice (assuming they’ve unlocked all of them). The default bonus is Copycat, which allows a player to steal his killer’s class for one round, and get a taste of the weapons and perks of a more advanced player. The next one unlocked, and the last one we saw, is Painkiller, which affords players 10 seconds of extra health after they respawn – great for when you’re being spawn camped."

"Secondary weapons are no longer just pistols – they include machine pistols, shotguns (standard and automatic), and various rocket and missile launchers."

"CoD4’s red dot sight, grenade launcher, and suppressor are still here, but there’s so much more. Attachments no longer refer to just physical objects and properties, they can refer to skills too. Akimbo (dual wielding) and Rapid Fire are a whole lot cooler than “Digital Camo.” Other new attachments include a heartbeat sensor, thermal scope, and tactical knife."

"In other news, sniper rifles can now be fitted with suppressors. “Run and gun” players may not like the change, but sneaky *******s like myself are all over it. Shotguns are now suppressible too."

"Aha! That's why we have callsigns, which are essentially big customizable plaques which pop up when you score a kill or perform a commendable action. Callsigns include a title, which is a string of letters (in this case "My name is"), an insignia (that ghostly fellow), a background, and, of course, your gamertag and rank. The titles, insignia, and backgrounds are all unlockable, and there are hundreds of them unlock. You can unlock them by leveling up, or by completing certain prerequisites."

"three of the multiplayer maps: Afghan, a desert map, Highrise, a skyscraper, and Favela, a shanty town in Rio de Janeiro."

"Afghan is a rocky desert map, the centerpiece of which is the ruins of a downed jumbo jet. The open central area, which contains the aeronautic set piece, is great for snipers as it’s overlooked by several high cliffs and bunkers. At the northern and southern ends, the passages become more confined in caves and on ledges, and the fighting gets more intense." (http://static.gamesradar.com/images...ultiplayer hands-on/afghan--article_image.jpg)

"The term “favela” means shanty town, which, you guessed it, is what this is. The best way to conceptually divide this map is into two sections – the high ground and the low. The high ground is on the rooftops, which provide little cover but offer faster travel and a broad view of the larger streets and objective sites. The low ground is great for making escapes, as you can disappear around corners faster than your pursuer can rattle off bullets, though you must always be weary of the marksmen who lurk above." (http://static.gamesradar.com/images...s-on/official/mp_favela_01--article_image.jpg)

"This map’s uncharacteristic modern urban setting is very welcome. The map is comprised of the roof of an unfinished skyscraper (complete with helipad), two interior office spaces at the northern and southern ends, and a passageway which connects the two sides." (http://static.gamesradar.com/images...on/official/mp_highrise_02--article_image.jpg)

http://kotaku.com/5360510/360-250gb-hdd-wont-be-sold-separately

"When Microsoft announced that a bundle including two controllers, a new game and a 360 with a 250GB HDD was "only" $399, it led many to think the days of over-priced 360 HDDs was over. It's not.

In this little demonstration video for the new console, Microsoft's Larry Hryb has announced that the 250GB HDD won't be sold separately."

EDIT 2 : More videos via GameTrailers.com

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/modern-warfare-2/11043?show=Gameplay#Content

9 brand new MW2 mp videos released last night.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/hands-on-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2-multiplayer/

"There's a lot more customization with attachments and paints as well. All of the camo skins are back, with some additions, and attachments, including an under-slung shotgun and a heartbeat sensor for the assault rifle, so you can reenact those creepy moments from Aliens. You can also select a Riot Shield as your main weapon, which protects you from most primary fire. It's wise to crouch while using it though, so you don't get your feet blown off. You can melee attack with the shield (two hits for a kill), although you'll have to switch to a secondary to shoot."

"The coup de grace is the new Game Winning Kill Cam, which gives everyone a slow-motion shot of the kill that won the match. Perfect for gloating, or reminding you how badly you screwed up by not checking your six. You'll also see Accolades at the end of each match, which are mini-rewards based on your performance in the game. For example: Lock'n'Load (most reloads); Lockdown (most time spent in one place); and Defuser (most bombs defused). These appear in the game summary underneath your XP bar."

EDIT 3 : Confirmation of a 'guest' feature in MW2?

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/press-event-modern-warfare/56086

Stop the video at 0:27 / 7:08

You can see his gamertag "MW2fourzerotwo" stored on a MU (memory unit / memory card) and a 'guest' login (like Halo 3's multiplayer) under it.

I will update this post with any more new information as it happens.

Are you saying CoD ISN'T "go from point A to B, shoot anyone in the way?" Last time I checked, it was. For 5 games now, too.

Maybe if you understood my post (which you obviously didn't) you'd understand I was implying that a simple concept can go a long way if done correctly, which is why I threw in L4D. In case you don't know, L4D has an extremely simple concept... Give the player a gun and a **** load of zombies to kill while getting from point A to point B.

If you still don't get me, let me make it clear for ya. YES CoD4 is point A to B blah blah blah blah. But wait a second... Didn't CoD4 receive multiple game of the year awards? Yes
Is it still one of the most popular games of the decade? Yes

Is L4D another "point A to B, shoot anyone in the way" shooter? YES
Isn't L4D another highly acclaimed shooter? YES

If you still don't get it, you need to take this quote below and post it on your wall or something and read it aloud until it sticks.

"A simple concept can go a long way if done correctly"
- TRG

Go back to playing Halo and come up with a legit argument.

EDIT TO PREVENT DOUBLE POSTING- A LOT of stuff is being released atm, but I gotta get in bed for school tomorrow. However, it looks like we have a LOT to look forward to! Expect a lot of updates to the thread tomorrow! :D

PHEW that took a while.

After reading through everything and watching a crapload of the videos, my doubts about this game are diminished. IW went ALL OUT with MW2, and the amount of new content added to this game is just MIND BLOWING. I can truthfully say that I've never been this excited for a game before (more than Brawl even). Anyone who thinks that this game is just CoD4 with new guns, maps, and a few other additions is going to be eating their words once they look at the reviews.

We are definitely looking at a serious candidate for game of the year. Whether it wins goty or not, I have no doubt this is going to be the biggest game of 2009. Plus I'm loving the amount of hype behind the game so far. :p

Enjoy the new content everyone!

What other game(s) is/are being released this year? Halo 3: ODST? I've never heard of such a game!

And I'm willing to bet that MW2 will win GOTY or else I'm gonna cry lol.

Hype for a game is good in small doses. We don't want it to get overboard unlike other games. *coughfableandfable2cough*

I wonder if this will have Nazi Zombies (or something similar) in it. That was the only thing I enjoyed about COD5 really... :/

Doubt it, as good Ideas from fans don't always get to developers (Note the fact that Ridley was the most wanted character by fans to be playable in Brawl)

I'm going to make a good prediction: the aa12 shotgun will be the Noob shotgun. Why? 'cause it's a ****ING AUTOMATIC FIRE SHOTGUN! AND AUTOMATIC AS IN CONSTANT STREAM OF ****ING BUCKSHOT!!!

Fortunately, I prefer sniper rifles, so no Noob automatic shotguns for me. (Right now I'm looking at the M107/M8281 sniper rifle)

Thanks for the wonderful updates, FAIL.

I'm looking forward to seeing the UMP and the P90 in action. Lately all I've seen are the FAMAS and that new SAW. I wonder if the M16 will be rivaled by the FAMAS or will it still be RDP w/grip, MP5, M4, and M16's ruling everything. :-p

I have a feeling there will be a much better Multiplayer though. I'm glad too. COD4 multiplayer got boring after 3 days (all added up). And COD5 is just...not good. Besides Nazi Zombies :)
Any news about upcoming DLC for it? Everyone says it's going to be Area 51 next. :?

How did it get boring after 3 days? Please elaborate.

Yeah, the first 2 or 3 map packs are a timed exclusive for the 360. They will be released on the other platforms at a later time. Never heard anything about any Area 51 DLC.

Err I constantly played Search and Destroy, then moved onto Hardcore. That's all I really enjoyed playing. And the total time on the Barracks screen or whatever added up to 3 days and like 7 hours (give or take).

There's your problem. You only enjoy playing those certain playlists/gametypes. You could at least try the other ones like Domination or Headquarters. Myself, I really only play regular TDM, Search and Destroy and Team Tactical with my friends. I enjoy a game of Domination every once in a while tho. I stick to core, don't like hardcore because you can kill your own teammates. (and yes I have played hardcore a few times, people get really mad when you teamkill them by accident and they are too serious because they think that they are better then you because they play hardcore which is untrue)

I only have like 6 days, something hours and something minutes logged into CoD4's MP. The top person on my friend's list for time played is like 22 days lol.

New MW2 news :

Modern Warfare 2 'Veteran Edition' offered by UK retailer GAME

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/modern-warfare-2-veteran-edition-offered-by-uk-retailer-game/

"UK residents who shop at GAME will be wandering around cluelessly in the dark this November when Modern Warfare 2 hits store shelves. Rather than getting the night vision goggle-equipped "Prestige Edition" like way cooler UK retailer HMV, those who shell out £119.99 for the 'Veteran Edition' will receive the 12-inch statue of returning Modern Warfare character Captain "Soap" MacTavish, seen above."

I have tried other games. I never liked them. Team Tactical would be better if it was only search and destroy.

I hate how useless Molotovs are in Nazi Zombies. Other than for making crawlers, they're good for slightly inconvinincing them. Like untying their shoe or tapping them on the shoulder.

Guys I saw a 10 minute video last night of a CTF game. I'll try to find it and post it here. It showcases the .50 Cal with a Heartbeat Sensor, and some variant of the SAW with a Red Dot.

Nevermind, I can't find it.

However here's a review of a guy who played it (People who're invited to IW events).

What's the Heartbeat sensor for exactly?
And it's an attachment right? Like...you put it on your thumb or something?
I guess that would be pretty cool.

It's used for what it's called...it detects and displays heartbeats from enemies around you.

And yes it is an attachment. No, you put it on your gun. It's basically a small screen which beeps every few seconds and detects the heartbeats of any enemies nearby.

You can see an example of it in the E3 demo video located here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZUmTdeaoiQ

Oh ok then. I thought it was like the Wii attachment thing you stick on your thumb. And it's basically like a U.A.V. thing? IMO it'll be the last attachment you can unlock for the gun. They make you work for it.

You mean the vitality sensor? And yes, I suppose so but instead of scanning the whole map, it only scans the area around you. Maybe. I'm assuming that they will have a perk which will make you invisible to this attachment. Maybe a modification to the "UAV Jammer" perk in multiplayer?

Must be somewhat like the Halo Radar. And yeah that would be a pretty decent perk.
