So how would the characters in Melee be categorized if we lumped them into fighting game classes? Obviously Fox/Falco/Falcon would be Rushdown type characters, but what about the others?

Falcon is farrrrrrrr from rushdown dawg.

He's more of a turtler than a rushdown. Why? Cuz falcon on has one good approach (nair). The game plan with falcon is to DD->punish.

BTW to the people who don't know the types of play in fighting games they're rushdown, run away, turtle, and trap.

really though no character is just one category

compared to other fighting games all characters in smash are grapplers except Falco, so we can ignore it

I know at times pikachu can be in the rushdown part nair and d-tilt. also fox could fall into like nearly all of those groups.

isn't zoning and spacing the same thing? puff could be in turtle, zoning, trapper all at the same time.

sometimes it isn't running away sometimes DDing is spacing and space control.

also fox on the edge trying to get back on can be trapped in a way you could force him to be stuck or run into a bair.

I think in a way everyone is a mix in a way. but some pints are stronger and abused more.

Rushdown: in the opponent's face often, goes for combos, generally fast, projectile a bonus but not necessary

Run Away: hit and run type of character. Fast like a rushdown, but relying a bit more on spacing and aggravating the opponent.

Zoning: in a 2d fighter, this would be someone that relies on the wall heavily. Getting someone to the wall and demolishing them there using their ranged, prioritized arsenal. In Smash it can mean the edge, or platforms. Marth is a high-priority character that controls these areas really well. Don't get stuck on the platforms on Yoshi's Story for instance.

turtle: a slow defensive character. Usually the big guy in a fighting game.

grappler: relies on throws. pretty much can't win without heavy throwing. throws are more important in Smash than in other games, since they're a third of the rock/paper/scissor dynamic, (attack/grab/defense) so everyone is kind of a grappler. But we can say that relative to the rest of the cast, ICs are much more grab-based.

trap: these characters set up a chain of attacks that keep an opponent in a controlled space, taking hits. Eddie from GG is a great example. I don't think Melee has one of these, but Snake from... that other game... fits the bill perfectly.

Falco has elements of Rush, Zoning, and Trap. His rush aspects are all pretty obvious, namely his easy approach, his blockstrings/mixup potential, and his combo potential. As far as Zoning and Trapping goes, His laser is a great to zone out your opponent as well as limit their movement and take away their options. Falco is also the best character at forcing people to shield and at putting people into bad positions.

l'm seeing Mario and Doc being around balanced, they can fit in some of those categories. Also, a lot of characters can trap in melee if you can mindgame and read for patterns. Any character can fall in any category, it depends on the character and the persons playing style

doesn't sheik have sheild pressure/needles that control a lot of space also if sheik pushed them near the edge they have like no options backed up far enough.

I think Shiek would be another zoning character like Marth. But then again, she could be another rushdown too. She does have an excellent throw game in NTSC, but she's not dependent on it.
