Every DK user deserves a crowd chanting the DK rap

Starts out bad but he makes a good comeback and almost beats Chillin

A set I had at my last weekly. Ended up winning the tournament without dropping a set, all DK too.

I know I edgeguard like kind of a buster sometimes but I've been working rill rill hard on my neutral and dash dance game lately so let me know if all of that looks good.
I like how you try not to overdo the combos and focus on getting falcon off stage. You make effective use of the back throw too. I've seen a few DKs that are a little too cargo up throw happy and it tends to work to there detriment. I've actually learned heaps from your vids Chandy keep em coming!

Dang Chandy, bein honest, your falcon matchup needs work. I'm always impressed by your vids, but I guess since I have so much falcon experience, I noticed the mistakes.

On a basic level, realize how terrible falcon's recovery is, and when he's too low to go above ledge. You politely gave him ledge more times I could count when just hanging there was a KO. If you have trouble with falcons juking you when they go high, you can call their bluff. If you jump out after them, wait for their upB, then just double jump bair. They can't do anything till the apex of their upB pretty much.

I'm not sure about his counter pick against you, with Dream Land known as one of DKs best stages. Also the better people I play, the less I choose FD against Falcon. Sure, easier chaingrabs, but everything else is in Falcon's favor. So much room to run circles around you, and his throws are now guaranteed knees instead of platforms saving you. Platforms help you combo, too.

Your fundamentals and movement are much better than mine, but you've gotta work on edgeguards. In my mind, if a falcon ever makes it back to stage, I am bad. Falcons recovery is free edgeguarding. Always cover low recovery first, nothing sucks more than a falcon getting ledge on a sweet spot DJ. If they have no jump and they try to go low, you have years to just shorthop edgehog. If they try to juke high, just jump to the apex, ded.

You can do it Chandy. Channel the upBs from ledge too. Feel the dong.

That's a lot more what I'd expect of Chandy, haha. You can't regrab off a uair though, even at low %. I've had Falcons even jump out of a uthrow regrab at 0%, so I try to be really careful near 0%.

FD is a lot of fun against bad falcons, a nightmare against patient ones.

Also, try to work upB from ledge as an edgeguard option. In the recent video you posted versus a Marth, you would have ended matches way in your favor if you upB'd him. Marth's get screwed really hard by upB from ledge.

Other than that, keep it up. Always enjoy watching the Chandy.

Sup guys, thought I'd introduce myself here as well as ask for advice. I'm a pretty new player (started back around mid-May) and I've been maining DK since day 1. I just got an adapter for playing Netplay a few days ago, so I was able to record a set of mine that I played yesterday for you guys to critique.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptVwxKATHgU

Please be as brutally honest as possible, my goal is to improve as much and as quickly as I can. Keep in mind though, there are a fair amount of technical flubs that I (and my opponent) make due to the lag, such as me DJ bairing instead of wavedash bairing at the beginning of match 1.

A couple of really bad things I've noticed that I need to work on are me using nair and dair way too much (especially in neutral), not dash dancing nearly enough to try to bait out dumb stuff from my opponent, relying on grab too much and using it even when they're out of range, and not spacing with bair enough. I got lucky with my opponent not being the best, but against a better player (especially in those two matchups) they would've destroyed me for those awful habits.

Thanks in advance for any advice on my awful play, hopefully you guys can help me level up!

I was in a tournament last weekend, Fragsoc 4, came 9th out of 47.

Two notable sets:

vs a Marth/Falco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j4uLI_uYKM

vs a Falco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yg3LvZ4c-Q

I haven't fought a lot of Falcos, but in this tournament I had to go against a couple. I feel that if I didn't drop any punishes I would have won.
Any help welcome, any recommended Falco punishes welcome too.

As an introduction I'm fairly new to taking DK seriously in Melee. My main was Fox, but I switched to DK because I was doing better in local weeklies than I was with Fox. I am a stream guy for SmashHouseUK, which is why my sets weren't being updated whilst I was playing.

Just some general things -

You need to be more active when edge guarding; refreshing your invincibility when stalling, going on stage then WD back to ledge to throw off their timing, going out and using aerial Up-B to guarantee an edge guard (the forearm hits hard top-front at start up), Let go DJ Bair, etc...

CC grab and CC D-tilt more

Against Falco you gotta DI and SDI those pillar combos, it's harder to escape with DK since he's huge but there were 3 times where you could have DI'ed toward stage and Wall Teched (probably could have landed on stage even) This is one of the few benefits to being so large he is more likely to hit the stage from further like Ganon (he's also got a good wall tech Bair like Ganon).

Cheers. I play a lot of PM DK, including in that tournament, so Im a bit scared of doing anything off stage because I get iasa timings and maximum safe distances wrong.
I was pretty much only going for up bs from ledge because of that. Didn't want to go far for that either because it's different.
Refreshing ledge is scary for the same reason. I dont think he has a safe way of doing it vs a spacie, not that it matters since I should be able to react to a side b in time anyway. Does haxdashing work?

The main reason I switched to DK from Fox was to get CCing into my system. It feels so unnatural to me, I do have to force it. A good player in my region mains Pikachu so I'd need it to beat him, though I can only ever CC grab vs Marths

Falco DI for pillars, best to SDI away always and DI SDI in for dair edgeguards with a tech? I gave up too easily

EDIT: In the first video, do you think the dair at 11:16 was survivable? Also is it possible to get multiple frames of SDI from a Falco dair, or would holding C stick right for the buffer for one input be sufficient?

I remember testing it a long time ago, but yes by some miracle DK has a FI Hax Dash even though his ECB is wonky. You have to FF the regrab and it's only like 1-2 frames leniency but it's not too hard to do. As always the hard part is refreshing it more than once and knowing when the cliff grab 7-8 frame window is over. He can still refresh inv. every 34-36 frames using just good ol FF DJ and let go DJ FF regrab, that's actually good enough just to make sure you're invincible before trying a Bair or other offense like aerial strong hit Up-B (or just not getting hit by their Up b so you can punish their landing on stage).

Falco's Side-B is borderline unreactable, you have to expect it and always assume it first as he levels to the ledge His Up-B on the other hand is slow to start and and has no hitbox on startup. Go oout there and hit him if you can, Aerial Up B's swirling hitboxes can even stop an active Up-B from both spacies if you're late.

Yea CC with DK is very overpowered, against Sheik it's a must since it can circumvent her frame traps and fast moves. without CC DK loses that MU by a mile. DK gets so much off his grabs vs so many characters, so it's worth practicing a lot and having it frame tight.

Yep, but also on stage be random when you have stage to play with, meaning down't always DI or SDI the same or you will get read easily, and there are some cases where Falco's drift and F-smash can reach upon landing even with optimal DI. Off stage yes you have to SDI and DI in for optimal survivability.

EDIT: In the first video, do you think the dair at 11:16 was survivable? Also is it possible to get multiple frames of SDI from a Falco dair, or would holding C stick right for the buffer for one input be sufficient?

Yes but you would have had near perfect SDI and DI, if that was a weak hit of Dair maybe not. The weak hit is sometimes used often at high percents by Falcos since it can't be SDI'ed as much and it has less hit lag to allow mutiple SDIs, basically it's harder to move further in hitlag and can prevent you from making contact with the stage or getting on the other side of the dair. But even the strong one I find hard to multi SDI, you don't see it much at high level either because it's not like a big damage, lots of hit lag, powerful move. All frames of hitlag on almost any move are SDI-able except the last. ALso for MSDI you have to return the center circle of the analog and then hit another new direction or it won't count, similar consecutive SDIs don't count.

With concern to the C-stick question I don't think it would be even close... usually double stick DI or ASDI is only really used on the ground. Not only that but DK's weird fixed ECB might ruin how DSDI and ASDI are suppsoed to affect ECBs in the air (I'm not sure on that). I do know that C-stick SDI will override ANalog SDI and it's a much weaker version of it, so it'a usually not ever preferred in the air (on ground it's sort of similar since ASDI down it a worse version of true CC) Also I believe using C-stick will not allow MSDI, only ASDI from the C-stick and DI from the analog.

I have another video, I'm only going to post ones where I get rinsed so I can get advice.
I came 5th in this tournament, but I ended up playing against a pretty good Peach. Other ones I have played in the past didn't use shield pressure, so I was trying to adapt as it went on.

First game was on FD because it was between that and Fountain of Dreams.

I could have tilted shield/lightshielded more, and after seeing a fair I should have spaced a bair. I got caught out from using tournament winner too often too. I did well in this tournament though

Have some more vods at my last tourney, which I took 1st in!
Still very messy play but now that I'm sponsored I will be using that excuse less often.

vs Falco (jakx)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or7HttdB-Sg

vs Capt. Falcon (Toast) this guy is one of my long time friends so this match was very serious
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjqACpXdy2E

vs Yoshi (weedlar)

Had a lot of rough matches, but I adapted and was able to do a losers run and take it all!

I'd appreciate any critique, aside from my tech flubs haha

Watched a few games of WF and GF. You are definitely converting a lot when you get grabs. But you were struggling a bit in neutral. Particularly on Fountain of Dreams, I noticed that CoolKid was lasering considerably less because of the platforms being at obnoxious heights. He was relying on full jumps to avoid your and catching you with dairs/bairs. You should be dash dance grabbing those. There's no reason why something as slow and telegraphed as a full jump Falco aerial shouldn't be completely shut down. You can even beat his dair with up-b invincible startup.

You weren't light shielding nearly enough. Light shield means you suffer more shield stun, so I know why you were avoiding it. But there are situations when you just don't want to risk getting shield stabbed. Plus you could have used the push back on light shield to get out of Falco pressure sometimes.

You were bairing out of shield a bit slow. Also, I saw a number of situations when wavedashing out of shield could have put you in a good position either by getting you closer to center stage or just to frustrate Falco's shield pressure attempts. In general, I felt you were being a little too trigger happy on up-b. You did land some absolutely huge up-b kills, but knowing restraint when appropriate is always good too.

Thank you! I greatly appreciate the advice.

I do know that I am bairing slow oos, I need to practice it. Ideally I should be able to hit a pikachu but I know that I need to work on that.

Wavedash oos is something I need to do too. I only use R trigger so I need to practice going half-press to full-press.

And good point about lightshield. I used to lightshield a lot more, but I kept losing chances to retaliate. I guess versus Falco it does often make sense to just use it as an escape.

Good catch on the lack of lasers on FoD. I actually didn't notice that because I am always fearing the lasers.

I'll definitely incorporate all those things, thanks again.

The main TO of Clutch City Clash was my college roommate and he'll be housing me for the tournament. He also happens to be housing a bunch of other top players who were flown down for the event. I'll be spending the weekend with Lucky, SFAT, HMW, S2J and M2K, and I'll be bringing my recording set-up along too. I'll make sure to post all the VODs of me getting bodied here for y'all's research.

I hope you guys like watching Chandy vs Falco, because HO BOY HO GOSH THERE'S A LOT OF THAT. Please give me tips if you think you know more about playing DK vs. Falco than I do. Or even if you don't, I might still get a chuckle out of the silly things that you say. We like to have fun around here.

Game 2 here is the peak of Chandy vs Falco. Probably the best I've ever played the match-up? Idk bro it's dank.

I'm not sure if the OP wants to maintain this anymore. As a fan of DK, I thought about adding the more modern DKs.

Here is a list of matches from DK main Ringler:

Ringler (DK) vs. Shroomed (Marth)

2021

Ringler (DK) vs. Jim Jam Flim Flam (Ness)

Ringler (DK) vs. Shroomed (Marth)

Ringler (DK) vs. Tai (Marth)
