IMPORTANT: When arriving on campus, if you are confronted by security please explain to them you are going to the Video Game Tournament hosted by the Film Interest Floor. The reason is they don't want visitors attending D-Day events occurring at the same time that are UR students only. If you get any trouble with them just call me at 317-753-5476 and I'll talk to them. You shouldn't have any problems though.

Rochester Brawl!

A lot of people really loved the tournament last time, and thus by popular demand I will be holding another one. Aren't I nice? So prepare your wiimotes, nunchucks, classic controllers, gamecube controllers, and dreamcast controllers (lol) for BRAWL!

Teams - $20 per team / $10 per teammate

Prizes:

First Place - 60%
Second Place - 30%
Third Place - 10%

Prizes apply to both singles and teams brackets.

The more people come, the bigger the pot will grow! Of course, the title is what's most important!

Rules:

Singles

Format:

- Double elimination.

Match Rules:

- All matches are best-of-three. Winner's Finals and Loser's Finals are best-of-five.
- Players meeting twice in tournament play will expand their previous set to a best-of-eleven continuation.
- The Grand Finals set will be two best-of-five sets. Grand Finals will not be a continuation set.
- All matches are three stock with a six minute time limit.
- Sudden Death will not be played. Ties are broken by percentage. If percentages are equal, then sudden death will be played.
- Items will be OFF.

Stage Selection:

- After characters are chosen for the first match, both players can knock out one stage for the duration of the set. Random select stages can be knocked out. Stages knocked out do not carry over to continuation sets.
- Unless all players can agree on a stage, the first stage of a regular set will be randomly selected. If the set is a best-of-eleven continuation, the loser of the first set may pick the first stage at the beginning of the continuation set.
- After each match, the loser of the match can counterpick with a legal stage or elect to go random before characters are chosen.
- Stages cannot be played twice unless the current set is a best-of-eleven continuation. The only stages that can be played twice during continuation sets are random stages.
- All players have one reset per set. Resets may only be used on randomly selected stages during the first five seconds of play. The stage cannot be played again when randomly selected, but is still available for counterpicking.
-If two players agree on a banned stage, then they can feel free to play on it.

Character Selection:

- A double blind pick may be called at any time during any set.
- After each match, the loser may pick the next stage (or go random). After this decision is made, the winner of the previous match may change characters. Afterwards, the loser of the previous match may change characters.
- Characters may not be changed after a reset is called. Once characters are chosen, the decision is in effect until the end of the match.

Teams

Format:

- Double elimination.

Special Team Rules:
- Team Attack is ON.
- Life stealing is allowed.

All other rules that apply to singles apply to teams as well.

Other Rules:

You will disqualified if you use modded controllers or the programmable functions on third-party controllers (like rapid-fire).

Of course, you cannot use glitches or stalling to either disable your opponent or indefinitely suspend match play. Doing so can lead to match forfeiture or tournament disqualification. This includes things like the Falco-laser-lock, don't do crap like this.

In an effort to prevent bracket manipulation and to preserve the spirit of the tournament, the following rule is in effect. Matches or entire sets may not, under any circumstances, be voluntarily forfeit by any player for any reason. Match or set forfeiture occurs upon the discovery of a broken rule. Absence from a match or set or voluntary forfeiture will result in total disqualification. Make sure you have a way of being contacted if you happen to be absent from your set when the time to play comes. You can also notify tournament staff if you will be running late beforehand or at any time during the tournament.

Coaching is allowed between matches, but no mid-match instruction may occur. Talking, sneering, and giggling from coaches is allowed, but coaches can be silenced at the request of any player currently engaged in a set.

Trash talking IS ENCOURAGED. No fighting, no rough stuff, no overly abusive language or yelling...you know the deal. Be nice, and try to be good about when you lose because (almost) everyone is guaranteed to lose at least once, so just be good about it.

BYOC (Bring your own controller) kthx.

Other Notes:

The ruleset IS NOT open to change.

Bringing TVs, Wiis, copies of the game, and my power strip would be a great help. Please bring any of these items if you can, preferably my power strip. If you do, please be sure to mark them in some way, shape, or form so that they can be identified as your own.

I'll be hoping to get plenty of good food for all of you again. Provided you promise to bring back my power strip and not break my Wii this time. :)

There will be match recording going on as well! Expect many great battles on youtube (there are 56 videos from the last tournament up at http://youtube.com/user/XiiviiX ).

Tell all your friends! :D

Excellent! I'll definitely be there, and there will be no spiking me through halberd or my not killing someone for two stocks this time around, either =P

an added note, that's a lot of random stages =/

I follow the stage discussion forums a lot, there are very good reasons for the high number of neutrals. You should check it out. Also Mic_128 said that Halbred/Seige will very likely be neutral when the list comes out.

will there be melee
If we get enough people to bring TVs then there can be a melee set-up easily. However if no one brings TVs and we have to rely on my limited number of set-ups (4) then we'd have to do brawl-only until we got through most of the rounds, then eventually switch a TV over to melee for friendlies.

If people are planning on bringing Wiis + TVs, please let me know as it will be great if you do. The more Wiis/TVs the better!

i have a question. why is green hill a counterpick? it looks like some of the banned levels are banned just for walk off walls or hazards but green hill's got both.

also: screw melee, will there be 64 :D

Um, I have my N64, but I don't really think I want to waste a TV set-up on it, haha. Green Hill Zone is only counterpick for teams. I don't see any need to ban it, it balances itself in teams, but on one will pick it anyway probably.

Whenever TML shows up life happens.

If I show up.

I must've said "I might go to this" to at least 100 tournaments, and I've actually only made it to one LAWL.

EDIT: oooooh you know it jesiah, I def will!

Yeah, I know what you mean, but there's still plenty of great people for you to beast with:yoshi2: . It'll be fun and the last one until the fall.

I've seen you say you'd go to everything actually. You should come, it'll be fun to play some melee and not just brawl the whole time.

me and energheizer are coming to this. so happy skyworld is not on :)
Glad you guys are coming. Why is it every tournament I never get to play you? And why is it every tournament Energheizer gets much lower than he should? >.> You guys should bring some more peeps with you. Haha.

Anyway, onto the more important note, after following stage discussion for like 379273929 posts I noticed this little list, I kind of like the way it's set-up.

Battlefield Recommended: Random Starter
Final Destination Recommended: Random Starter
Smashville Recommended: Random Starter
Yoshi's Island/Brawl Recommended: Random Starter
Lylate Cruise Recommended: Random Starter Optional: Counterpick

So I'd like to get some input on this. Do people like the list the way it is or maybe this looks a little better? I know my list is sort of both ban and neutral heavy and lacks counterpicks. Is everyone fine with that? Or would they like to see something like this? I kind of hate having limited counterpicks personally, but I'll live. Also, would anyone really mind if Lylat was counterpick? I mean, at the past few tournaments EVERYONE used their ban on it. I don't like that. If everyone bans it, then obviously everyone doesn't feel it should be neutral.

Another note, plenty of people from other places (syra, buff) will be coming, so bring all of your friends for a great tournament!

I like the original list far better. It's an unfortunate fact that the game just has too many ridiculous stages and not enough in between. A lot of those recommended counterpicks are more than a little questionable (Yoshi's Island? That one with the superlow ceiling? And Shadow Moses Island?).

Yeah, those two I wasn't taking too seriously. However the stages that I was considering changes for were:
Lylat from neutral to counterpick (probably the one thing I'm most likely to change)
PS1 from neutral to counterpick (3/4 transformations become stall-fests, it was ok with 2/4 in melee which was fast-paced, but brawl is a much slower pace and so much time stalling just won't work)
Halbred from counterpick to Neutral (so sue me, I see nothing wrong with it's simple, easy-to-avoid, predictable hazards)
Skyworld from banned to counterpick (sorry N.OW, but it isn't that bad...)
Pictochat from banned to counterpick (it's a bit tricky, but it isn't too bad)

Those were really the only things I thought of changing on my list. I just wanted some input.

Skyworld is absolutely silly. Its like playing on hyrule temple but worse. Just have to hope you get lucky, and it screws over the other guy more then you.

I like your other changes though, except i think lylat should still be neutral, i dont see whats so bad about it.

Only 2 changes were made to the stages:
PS1 moved from Neutral to Counterpick
Pictochat moves from Banned to Counterpick

Also, I got the pizzas lined up today. So there will be food for everyone. I'm buying sodas tomorrow too. :)

Yeah, pizza, yum. Also there will be plenty of chips and sodas as well, hooray. I hope I got enough, but at the same time you'll live. Haha. Smashfest on Friday? No fair getting extra training for my tourny.

Also, everyone note that the stage list is final, and ghey, like always since Lylat is neutral. Haha. Looks like we've got a decent batch of people coming to this, so it should be a lot of fun. Everyone bring some extra scrubs or something so I can get more money when I "win" *starts fixing bracket*.

Anyway, TVs and Wiis. We should hopefully have a good amount of them, unless NO ONE brings any. Please, if you can, do so. Why? Because it helps and it makes everyone happy. And it means the tournament won't be 464836482798739 hours. Seriously, did you guys see how long Arena's biweekly singles was? With 4 TVs and 1 friendly TV? Yeah, we definitely want to top that amount, right now we'll just end up being even. Please bring TVs + Wiis. haha.
