I'm not gonna lie, I'm a biased kid trying to get his friends to a tourney haha
But I don't think anyone from that area other than P and Nasty nate would take that offer.
Even then they're not planning on going. So if it somehow persuaded them to go (or possibly someone else) it would be increasing the amount of people coming and entering singles.
It's a win-win.

He's just doing this so his friends can have a way to get to the tournament, and he's paying out of his own pocket. Just because he can afford to do it doesn't mean you should get angry. I wish I could afford to go to more tournaments, but I can't, so he's helping Marq and I out. It is pretty unfair, but oh well.

because when you let your friend enter for free, you're generally making the winner(s) pay for their entry
unless you have a clearly defined venue fee and you move the proper amount into the prize pot from there
this is a similar gripe that I have with TOs playing for free without supplementing the prize pool from their venue fee take
although since I haven't won money in a smash tournament in over half a year, it doesn't REALLY matter to me personally, just in principle

Imagine if everyone got in free except for one person who had to pay their $5.
So the total pot = $5
Split the five between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd...
That's basically what it's like... Just on a lesser, but equally important scale.

but taking money out of the pot for his dumb friends who don't go to tounaments anyways (YEA I SAID IT) is DUMB
