Guide: how to evade final smashes

There are 5 types of final smashes:

Directional
Focused
Trapping
Stage-Wide
Transformation

since brawl appeared, final smashes has been used in friendly play and sometimes in tournaments just to cover a poor character weakness such as samus who has poorly moveset but strong final smash, this guide is to help people that is still getting caught by the opponen final smash and can defend him/her self , the guide will be like this:

BUT REMEMBER the best way to not get caught in a final smash i taking the smash ball first (Duh), here´s the list:

Bowser :bowser2:

how to evade/resist: being a stage depending final smash, the best option is to run to a safe place and/or sidesetp and air dodge his attacks and DI out of them, since it have a short period of time you´ll be safe in a few moments.


Captain Falcon :falcon:

name of final smash: Blue Falcon
type of final smash: trapping
difficult of evasion: normal
doesn´t deppend of stage
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: take care of not being mindgamed so falcon land his final smash, try sidestaping and/or airdodging, if you get caught by it try airdodging before the cutscene starts AND airdodge after being hit, like that the knock back will be less.


Diddy Kong :diddy:

name of final smash: Rocketbarrel Barrage
type of final smash: transformation
difficult of evasion: hard
it´s stage depending
best character to evade: Captain falcon :falcon:- Sonic :sonic:- meta knight :metaknight:- snake :snake:- marth :marth: lucario :lucario: charizard :charizard: jiggs :jigglypuff: kirby :kirby2: DDD :dedede: and others with good upB
how to evade/resist: diddy kong is totally untouchable while using his final smash so try getting far away from him, but if goes right to you airdodge and sidestep his peanuts so you won´t get hit and may recover damage if the peanut was left in the ground, sometimes the player may just hover over the stage and cause a rampage with the peanut blasters, if this is the case try avoiding as best as you can, just don´t stop moving and if you get hit airdodge to resist knockback.


Donkey Kong: :dk2:

type of final smash: Focused
Difficult of evasion: easy
it´s stage depending
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: since the final smash true potential is exploided when the player using it press A at the ryhm of the music the other player can easily get away and or sidesetp at the same ryhm, if done while your away of the ledge use up B towards the final smash so the hit restore your up B until it ends.


Falco :falco:

type of final smash: Transformation
difficult of evasion: hard
It´s stage depending

how to evade/resist: a pretty hard final smash to evade, yet kinda easy to resist, if you´re in a small stage such as final destination then the best option is to glide under the stage or wall jump and grab the ledge so you don´t need to be over the stage where you can be easily attacked, or use a character that can go under the stage such as peach, luigi or meta knight, if you had the bad luck to lose a stock try staying in the respawn plataform (because if you land on the landmaster it is most likely to try to star ko you with his fliying rockets thing).

Ganondorf :ganondorf:

how to evade/resist: one of the hardest final smashes to evade, yet not impossible, the best option you have is to use the start up time to get away from him, the problem with this final smash is that it stunt you until it hits, but what does stunt is the stomp ganondorf does before rushing towards you so this is the trick (works) jump during the start up time airdodge the stomp and use the up of your character (take care of not doint it too late).


Ike :ike:

type of final smash: trapping
difficult of evasion: hard
it´s not stage depending (at all)
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: just like C.falcon final smash you may get mindgamed to evade his attack but sadly airdodging is not very efecttive with it so try to sidesetp and/or roll behind ike, if neither works jump behing ike before using it (try to mindgame) but the problem is that it can still hit you if you´re behind him, so take care because if you´re caught you´re most likely to get star ko´ed.


Ice Climbers :popo:

how to evade/resist: another hard to evade, try to be on a high place most of the time, if you can attack the iceberg so it goes away faster then do it, yet keep altitud using characters with good up B specials like snake or sonic.


Jigglypuff :jigglypuff:

it´s stage depending
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: it´s not that hard to escape from this final smash since all it does is to take space in the stage ( but you can be launched away if you´re touching jiggs while it screams "jigglypuff!!!" if it is done in a small stage try grabing the ledge but releas it right before jiggs screams so you won´t get launched away.


King DDD :dedede:

name of final smash: Waddle Dee Army (BIG G** DANCE!)
type of final smash: Stage-Wide
difficult of evasión: easy

how to evade/resist: depending if you´re good at camping this final smash is easy to avoid since the waddle dees appear mostly in the ground and some times there appears gordos (fear them) if your using a fast character like captain falcon or sonic you´ll be ok but if your using one with good upB then you´ll be even more ok.


Kirby :kirby2:

how to evade/resist: sidestep/airdodge/roll wich ever you choose you´ll not get trapped if you do it at the right time (at same time kirby makes sounds with the friying pan)

how to evade/resist: try looking at the falling starts instead of yourself, like that you´ll know where are they heading and how to evade them (at almost the end of the final smash a barriage of stars fall near your position so be careful) this final smash is can be firectional influenced.

difficult of evasion: normal
it´s stage depending
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: being not trapped inside the bubble is almost impossible, yet is not 100% sure that you´ll fall asleep so just get out of it and wait (not camp) until the effects are gone, if you can ko others opponets trapped in the effects do it.


Mario :mario2:

how to evade/resist: theres not really much to say about this final smash, one of the worst, only fear if it´s done in mid air near a ledge, if you´re caught then DI out of it and/or airdodge.


Marth :marth:

how to evade/resist: it´s not that hard to evade unless you´re stunned, if you´re so well.....shame on you but if you arent then sidestep/airdodge/roll out of it´s way (if you´re opponent is noobish enough to do it in mid air without knowing how to stop it then taunt for the lulz).


Meta knight :metaknight:

name of final smash: Galaxia Darkness
type of final smash: trapping
difficult of evasión: normal

how to evade/resist: just as most of the others trapping final smashes airdodge/roll/sidesetp ouf of it, careful if you´re behind meta knight because like ike´s final smash it can trap you in there.

how to evade/resist: since this final smash will ALWAYS deal damage then don´t care about it, just fear if you´re trapped in the ground because of the rocket (since it´s the falling rocket what actualy KO you) if you see yourself caught in the ground use button mashing to set yourself free and get away from the falling rocket, you can control your damage a little shielding/air dodging/sidesteping or rolling while the bublors (or whatever thei´re called) bites you so you won´t get you damage so high at the end of the final smash.


Peach :peach:

name of final smash: Peach Blossom
type of final smash: Focused
difficult of evasion: very hard
it´s stage depending
best character to evade: everyone
how to evade/resist: try grabbing the ledge of the stage untilpeach stops dancing and/or go understage, if you´re caught by the final smash then button mash to wake up quickly, jumping and staying in air during the dance also helps to not fall asleep.


Pikachu :pikachu2:

name of final smash: Volt Tackle
type of final smash: transformation
difficult of evasion: very hard
it´s not stage depending (at all)
best characters to evade: captain falcon :falcon: sonic :sonic:
how to evade/resist: it´s almost impossible to not get hit by this final smash, in my opinion the second hardest to evade, if you´re caught by it try to airdodge whenever it goes towards you.


Pit :pit:

name of final smash: Palutena´s Army
type of final smash: stage-wide
difficult of evasion: normal
it´s stage depending
best characters to evade: captain falcon :falcon: sonic :sonic: and others with good jumps
how to evade resist: pay attention to wich angel will try to hit you so you can evade them and also airdodge if don´t want to lost your focus on pit (because he can attack you during the final smash)

how to evade/resist: the only way to not get caught by the arrow is to sidestep or roll at the right time which is before she launches the arrow and before the camera zooms out.

how to evade/resist: try running around the stage as you shot hop AND airdodge, if you´re caught by a explosion DI so you won´t get launched away.

it´s stage depending but anyways WHAT THE ****?!?!

how to evade/resist: this is the hardest final smash to evade because unlike pikachu´s it´s way easier to controll so you can´t get away so easily, anyways if you see that your opponent has a quite hard time to controll him/her self airdodge so you won´t get KOéd so easily.

how to evade/resist: don´t be scared of this final smash, it´s also one of the worst, if you get caught by it make sure to move away before she shots electricity out of her armor because if you toch her after putting on the power suit you´ll be pretty much lauched towards the blast line.

REMEMBER THE BEST WAY OF EVADING FINAL SMASHES IS TAKING THE SMASH BALL FIRST OR PUTTING THEM OFF!!

Cool guide. I'll try to contribute as well. :p

For Jigglypuff, it's not that hard. As it's about to send you flying, jump off the stage. And it won't get you, I might post a video on that.

For Olimar, you can take less damage by side-stepping constantly for a few seconds, then as the spaceship falls, just dodge it.

Also, just cause you're a Falcon main doesn't make him good at avoiding Final Smashes (lol Smash Balls). Actually, he's quite horrible at it.

i always play with smash balls on with my friends, i´ve already experienced all characters to evade final smashes (not just falcon) the reason i added falcon and sonic in most of them is because they are the 2 fastes characters, that´s a good adventage and i can resist most final smashes, if you know others characters good at evading some final smashes just tell me and i´ll add them, i wasn´t thinking right since i was tired from basketball.

The thing is, having good dash speed won't really help against most of the Final smashes (like...G&W...he can't go offstage with his FS, so Jiggs makes sense, but Falcon?), and some (for example Oli) I don't get how dash speed helps AT ALL.

You can plank out almost all of the transformation FS's, if not all.

Then some of the difficulties to avoid are way off. Marth is actually ridiculously easy to avoid. You can move around the ENTIRE TIME he's doing the animation of pointing up his sword, so just jump. If the stage has walk-off blast zones, Marth will die. ROB has invincibility frames over his entire, long lasting FS, and he has perhaps the most versatile FS in the game. He still has almost his whole moveset, and he has arguably the best recovery in the game, making it impossible to stall offstage aside from planking. Yet it's also normal difficulty to avoid. Then Luigi's Negative Zone is pretty damn hard to avoid, considering its range is huge, and you can't stall offstage if he activates it near the ledge. If you're caught in it, your speed is slowed drastically, his KO power (read:shoryuken) is enormous, and you have a good chance of going into footstool status (which is why you can't offstage stall). And that one is normal difficulty as well? He'll just chase you to one side of the stage and activate it when you're close enough (and its range is huge ALREADY).

For olimar, any character who can fly will avoid most of the damage and possibly the final explosion. The most dangerous part of his final smash is the explosion which has enormous range (bigger than it looks). It can be avoided by just hanging onto the ledge.

Visable Explosion: similar to electrode's explosion
Hitbox: almost the entire size of FD

Negative zone, as already said should be Very Hard, depends on stage though. Once you sleep you're dead.
Luigi's taunt spike can also be a KO move. Works on characters lighter than zelda, but they can still survive by DIing.

Peach blossom shouldn't be too hard, because you can just grab the ledge, or use a character that can fly or luigi. Just don't be too close to peach beacuse the closer you are, the more damage you take.

Sonic's Final Smash, lol play a lv.9 sonic.

Marth: Huge amount of freeze frames when it hits something... you can get hit after you AD / SS.

Fox isn't as hard as falco, because falco prefers the air =P.

yet, you´re talking like if all the final smashes can only be done in small stages like final destination, "IT´S STAGE DEPENDING" if G&W use his final smash in a huge stage falcon can easily run away, taunt and live to tell so, and so can sonic, luigi´s negative zone is stupid, and marth´s final smash can be canceled by the user, nuff said.

don´t worry dude, i´ll be editing tomorrow, i must add characters in some final smashes and change the difficult of others, remember it´s my first guide and even tough you must admit it´s quite accurate :awesome: i haven´t typed like that in years but i know my errors so i´ll be editing when i can, thanks for the advice.

Using Peach she can dodge a good amount of FSs than stated. Ah well. Nice guide though.

a lvl9 Sonic FS CPU = unpossible to dodge stay at one 24/7
if you got hit one time by Super Sonic (no matter who you are and how much dmg you got) you know you are dead soon

small stages like final destination
I haven't played on banned stages for a looooongg time, but FD is one of biggest legal starter stages. I'll give you slack cause you're relatively new and this is your first guide, but um...you'll learn alot more as you stay at SWF longer.

1) Peach's FS does not affect airborne characters.
2) Lol @ Ike's FS being hard to avoid.
3) DI is not the same as SDI, but neither make sense for what you're trying to say. When you say "DI out of them" (example: the Bowser part of your guide), you actually mean "SDI out of them". But the attacks come in single hits and have essentially no follow-ups cause they have enormous knockback, so what exactly are you SDI'ing out of? The only time you SDI is to avoid combos or to get out of multi-hit attacks.
4) I'll write more about characters that avoid FS's well if the guide expands, but many characters have AT's that you probably don't know about. Like Pikachu's QAC into another QA or QAC (continued until whenever) is much faster than Falcon, and maybe even Sonic.

Alright here's the how to dodge Jigglypuff's Final Smash for you all
Now why exactly would Jiggs use it at the center of one of the largest stages (in terms of flat ground)? She would instead chase you down to one side of the stage like Luigi would do for Negative Zone and trap you. And stages like Smashville are possibly small enough for her to cover the whole stage.

I find it pretty easy to dodge Ganondorf. Just double jump and UpB as soon as he activates it. Almost all characters can avoid it this way.

I HATE SONIC'S FINAL SMASH!

@Blissard: Good point, lmao. :p But for me, trapping doesn't really work TBH (except for some stages) Everytime I try that, the person always avoids it somehow. That's why (as I expected most people to do) go to the center or bottom of the stage to fill it up so people would get pushed on small stages like FD. Heck, even people I've seen try that and it doesn't work well most of the time since they go over Jigglypuff.

Wario-man can fly too... almost impossible to not get hit when using any character.

With pits final smash, you can roll around like crap, you'll dodge most of them.

FD is not a small stage though. It's actually one of the bigger ones, in terms of legal stages.

It IS small "vertically", in a sense, because you don't have platforms. But it's quite wide.

If you're Sonic, Final Smashes that don't involve flying are easy if you HA under the stage though this is arguably banned in competitive play (but so are Final Smashes, so moot anyway).

I see we're getting all technical now. :p I guess I should explain myself a little more. What I meant was when I use Jigglypuff's Final Smash on a stage it's more effective in, I go under the stage so it takes up the whole stage. So what I meant was that it's sizable enough for at least Jigglypuff to take up the whole stage.

I haven't played on banned stages for a looooongg time, but FD is one of biggest legal starter stages. I'll give you slack cause you're relatively new and this is your first guide, but um...you'll learn alot more as you stay at SWF longer.
Probablyy nit picking, but it needs to be pointed out.

The Op is probably comparing all stages. A guide isn't very good if it focuses only on "legal" stages (as they change and online doesn't care about legal stages). When writing something like this, all the stages have to be considered as they are all in the game and playable by the player.

I think some people already know this but Link's final smash can be shield or power shield if timed correctly. I've done it myself a couple times.

oh, and Kirby's Stone counters EVERY FINAL SMASH IN THE GAME(except Marth, Ike,MK, and Link).
anyone with super armor can resist marth´s final smash, ike using his aether or his neutral b can nullify the knockback and hitstun if the super armor is timed correctly, yet it´s way to risky to try to use the super armor everytime because miss a frame and it´s lights out for sure.

People really underestimate Yoshi's FS.

The way to make Yoshi's FS efficient is to stop shooting fireballs.

If you don't shoot any fireballs, Yoshi will spurt embers 4 times. Each sequence of ember spurting does up to 70% damage. Combine this with your hitbox in your body and you have an FS that may not KO, but will rack up a lot of damage.

BTW, even though the collision is blockable, the spurts will break your shield.

I know another way to dodge Sonic's FS: use Kirby and spam his down special. It takes some timing, but you should be able to survive without taking too bad of damage.

Anyone know if MK's infinite dimensional cape can help him not get damaged by Oliman's FS? Never tried it and too lazy but I probably with anyway.

a good sonic player (not a pro) can make super sonic stand still in the same spot you are in, so if you´re rock kirby sonic just stay floating above you so when the rock kirby effect dissapears you get hit, also you still get damage as rock kirby so.................

liking the list but you should add that you can if timed correctly completely avoid links/TL's final smash if you time an attack properly like a Fsmash. and the best way to avoid G&W FS is to stay above him if possible. oh and you never want to be offstage during a final smash such as mario's kirby's D3's or Pit's it's hell to recover while trying to avoid those.
But you should really also include the best ways to use these final smashes i think it would be beneficial in some way.

G&W final smash lets him jump pretty high so traying to be above him is risky and hard

During Oilmar's final smash you can avoid/reduce the damage while the ship is in the sky by sheilding, sidestep dodging, grabbing the ledge, or anything that makes your character invincible.

you can also avoid IC's FS by just repeatedly grabbing the edge with touching the stage or if your sonic use HA which allows you to hit and bounce off the iceberg without taking damage and causing the iceberg to shrink this also applies to moves like links dair or any move that allows you to bounce off objects after impact.

then kirby's is easiest to dodge when your farther away from them and when giga bowser is out just try not to get hit by the sweetspot of his uair as that has very high KO potential. and for FS's like marth and link just try to stay as vertically above them as possible on stages like FD your best options are to just try and bait the FS and ether sidestep or roll dodge.

A little helpful to evade Olimar's Final Smash go to a platform at the top of the screen with Kirby Jiggs King Dedede or Meta Knight and the jump up and use the up special this should avoid getting any damage.
