"Alaska has a sand desert with dunes over 100 feet high."

"Some salamanders can grow up to five feet in length"

The tentacles of the giant Arctic jellyfish can reach 120 feet (36.6 meters) in length.

The deepest part of the ocean is 35,813 feet (10,916 meters) deep and occurs in the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. At that depth the pressure is 18,000 pounds (9172 kilograms) per square inch.

The only letter not appearing on the Periodic Table is the letter “J”.

Most gemstones contain several elements. The exception? The diamond. It's all carbon.
All true.

Haha, the Mythbusters did this one. It's false, they got this ginormous piece of paper and ended up with like 11 folds I think.
When I was in middle school, I had a guy bet me $500 that he could fold a piece of paper in half 10 times. He couldn't do it, so he went double or nothing. He still owes me $999.84.

Wait, isn't the myth like, tearing it in half and then put the pieces on top of each other, then the paper would get so thick that no men on earth has the strength to tear it again. (2^7=128 pages on top of each other, try to tear that in half).

True. The giant arctic jellyfish, better known as the Lion's Mane jellyfish, can actually have tentacles up to 200 feet long.

The highest temperature produced in a laboratory was 920,000,000 F (511,000,000 C) at the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor in Princeton, NJ, USA.(quick Q, what temp would burn the atmosphere thus ending all life as we know it?)

False. The highest temperature ever reached by man was achieved at Fermilab (in Illinois) via proton-antiproton collisions. These produced energies of 2 trillion electron volts; in other words, temperatures of about 2.32e16 degrees Celsius (23,200,000,000,000,000 deg. C). Now that is hot.

As for "what would burn the atmosphere", well, there's really no such thing. You can't just "burn" the atmosphere, though I guess if the earth reached a high enough temperature (like if, say, the sun exploded/swelled) all the atmosphere's gases would heat up so much that they'd escape earth's gravity due to their kinetic energy. I'm not quite sure what this temperature would be though. That's another investigation for another day.

The deepest part of the ocean is 35,813 feet (10,916 meters) deep and occurs in the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. At that depth the pressure is 18,000 pounds (9172 kilograms) per square inch.
True. It is.

Partially True. "Q" also does not appear.

Most gemstones contain several elements. The exception? The diamond. It's all carbon.

True. At least as far as I know... if there are any other exceptions, please correct me.

The Black Mamba Snake's poison is more lethal than any other?
False. The most venomous snake in the world is the inland taipan, though it is not very aggressive; the black mamba is the world's fastest snake, and it is also aggressive to boot.

Heh, if by "conjure up chi" you mean "set yourself on fire", then yes.

"Alaska has a sand desert with dunes over 100 feet high."
True. Several areas have high sand dunes, such as the Nogabahara Dunes or the Great Kobuk Dunes, mostly in northwest Alaska. Some dunes can actually be 200 feet high!

"Some salamanders can grow up to five feet in length"
True. The world's largest salamander, the Chinese Giant Salamander, grows to be about 4.5 feet in length, though some can grow as long as six feet.

Sound travels about 4 times faster in water than in air.(making harder to interpret where the sound came from)
True. In fresh water, sound waves travel at 1,482 meters per second (about 3,315 mph).

Flying from London to New York by Concord, due to the time zones crossed, you can arrive 2 hours before you leave.
Sort-Of True. Really, you're arriving a reasonable number hours AFTER you left, from either perspective taken individually. But yes, you can leave at 4:00 GMT and arrive at 3:00 GMT -5.

The planet Saturn has a density lower than water.
True. But...

So, if placed in water it would float.
Basically false. Any amount of water would either be a) small enough to be gravitationally attracted to Saturn and absorbed. or b) frozen, and therefore ice.

It takes 70% less energy to produce a ton of paper from recycled paper than from trees.
Recycling is cool!

The common goldfish is the only animal that can see both infra-red and ultra-violet light.
True. Poor goldfish.

Sharks are immune to cancer.
False. However, they are highly resistant to the effects of most cancers. The Smithsonian has shark tumors on file, if you want to go look. Weirdo.

Thank you Goldshadow, this thread is a learning opportunity =]
In a book published about cats landing on their feet it was shown that many cats falling from more than 5 stories had less serious injuries then cats falling from 3-5 stories. One cat even survived I think it was a 200 foot fall.(the publishers got hate mail because readers thought that they did the cat dropping themselves)
Yea I remember this in high school physics class...good times. I'm not quite an eloquent story teller as my physics teacher, but basically the cat's tail allows it to orient itself upright when falling and its terminal velocity isn't quite high enough to cause serious damage. When dropped from a building less than 5 stories, the cat basically doesn't have time to orient itself and will likely be injured. Dropping a cat from a building higher than 5 floors would give it enough time to prepare itself for the impact. Ironically some people testing this theory "accidentally" tied the cat's tail to its body and indeed, they got owned dropping from any story both below and above 5. :p

No matter its size or thickness, no piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times. (false, I'm guessing. Simple logic tells me that even with exponential growth a piece of paper large enough could be folded much more than 7 times)
I believe the approximate maximum number of times a piece of paper can be folded is:
W=(pi)*t*2^(3/2[n-1])
where W=width, t=thickness, and n=number of times to be folded.
I'm pretty sure this equation refers to alternate direction folding though.

Lixivium's right though, I wouldn't really count this as a "word"... it's a chemical formula. Also, it's pretty easy to pronounce, the formula is basically a long string of amino acids like serine, tyrosine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, proline, arginine, and so on... in other words, nearly the whole thing just draws from a pool of 20 amino acid names.

Sound travels about 4 times faster in water than in air.

True. The speed of sound in air at room temperature is about 345 m/s, and the speed of sound in water 1483 m/s. The speed of sound traveling through steel is about 4500 m/s.

The planet Saturn has a density lower than water. So, if placed in water it would float.

Partially True. The density of Saturn is about 0.70 g/ml, as opposed to water, which is about 1.0 g/ml.
However, the actual planet itself would not float, though not quite for the reasons Drab mentioned. Saturn is a gaseous planet and has no solid boundary, so it wouldn't really be possible to float a sphere of gas. Also, water in space would not freeze; since space is a vacuum, it would vaporize and dissipate.

It takes 70% less energy to produce a ton of paper from recycled paper than from trees.
True. Paper made from 100% postconsumer (recycled) content requires about 64% less energy to produce than paper made from fresh, "virgin" wood fiber.

The common goldfish is the only animal that can see both infra-red and ultra-violet light.
Possibly. The goldfish can see slightly farther into the red range than humans can, and goldfish also have a fourth cone type in their eyes (as opposed to the red, green, blue that humans have) that allows them to see slightly further into the UV spectrum. However, I couldn't definitively find anything that shows only goldfish have this range of vision.

Sharks are immune to cancer.

False. Like Drab said. It's next to impossible to be immune to cancer, but sharks may have an edge in that they do not have bones (they have cartilage). This means that immune cells (specifically, B-lymphocytes) are already circulating in the blood because they don't need to be produced by bone (since sharks don't have bone). But this is mostly just hypothesis; the fact is, no study has even proven that sharks have a lower incidence of cancer than other animals. They may be just as or almost as susceptible to it as other creatures.

Um, he actually owes you ~.25*10^1460 but I doubt he can afford it. There's not enough matter in the universe to make that many 100 dollar bills

the only thing that would happen if you lit a match in a 100% oxygen enviornment would be that the flame is brighter, hotter, and bigger. the atmosphere would not explode, oxygen needs something to combine with inorder to burn, other than more oxygen.

Yeah, sort of.
Now really, you couldn't "destroy" or "burn" the atmosphere so that there wouldn't be any gas left. People have this misconception that when something burns, you're losing matter, that you're losing air because it's being consumed in the flame. All that's happening in combustion is a chemical reaction in which the matter is taking other forms;
For example, if you burn propane (C3H8), the resulting combustion reaction with oxygen is as follows:

C3H8 + 5O2 --> 3CO2 + 4H2O

All you're doing by "burning" the fuel (propane) and oxygen is converting it to carbon dioxide gas and water vapor; you end up with more gas than you started with. In the heat, atmospheric nitrogen would also react with some atmospheric oxygen and form nitric and nitrous oxides as well.

So theoretically, if you had enough fuel, you could combust ("burn") all the oxygen in the earth's atmosphere, which would effectively end most life.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the whole awards thing!

They were about a week ago, so I think we'll wait about another week (give or take depending on how many posts there are) for the next awards.

So let's keep those facts coming. I'll do the ones I haven't done yet sometime tomorrow.

One way to tell the age of a fish is by looking at its scales. They have growth rings just like trees. These are called circuli. Clusters of them are called annuli. Each annuli show one year.

Did you know porpoises could surf? They are frequently seen riding the bow wave of a ship. They make no swimming motions and can ride the wake for more than an hour. They can also turn on their side or flip completely around. Surf’s up porpe!

You may have heard someone say, "It’s raining cats and dogs." There have been actual documented cases from all over the world of fish, frogs, dead birds, snakes, snails, beetles, worms and jellyfish raining down from the sky in great numbers, but no reports of showers of cats or dogs.(tornadoes pick them up. Raining frogs ftw)

Salamanders are known to come out of wood when it was burning inside a fireplace, this is because Salamanders hibernate in wood.

True, that's just where their calender ended

Almost impossible to prove true or false right now, but it is a popular belief, and I say True

Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring material on earth. Perhaps their teeth could focus pressure in a way so as too not break, but I believe this is False
