Smash 3DS Is there a limit to how many items you can get from Smash Run?

On the bottom screen, the bar that shows which items you have fills up, and I'm not sure if you only keep the items you see on the bottom or if it remembers the ones that were pushed off the screen as well.

Also, what do the little gold/silver smash symbol items do?
