Is Yoshi really good in lag? I disagree.

This isn't necessarily a competitive topic or one that is intended to start a heated debate or to address the long standing bias the player-base at large has held against Yoshi or anything, but for the sake of proper analysis of my favorite character, the question deserves exploration.

It has come to my attention that a large amount of players and even top pros seem to think that Yoshi is really good in lag. From my experience of almost over 9000 For Glory matches, I couldn't disagree with that statement more. At least, it depends on what type of lag you are experiencing. I personally pay top dollar for the best internet service in my town, and I never enjoy playing a match in slime.

A lot of what I'm hearing is that Yoshi's moves are so fast, they are hard to punish in lag. That might be true, but every character is harder to punish in lag,. Other's have significantly deadlier moves in lag, or can more easily punish poor maneuverability - this more makes up for the loss of the ability to punish a quick attack off a defensive option.

For matches with slowdown and random skipping, by far the most common types of lag, I feel that Yoshi is at a disadvantage to the vast majority of the cast.
  1. Yoshi's offensive capabilities depend heavily on challenging your opponents reaction time. Standard approaches on the ground involve a risky game of dash or grab where the opponent has a brief moment to choose a defensive option. Any longer they have to think about your choice, the more likely they will pick the right defensive option. Approaches in the air are made more difficult, since every move is telegraphed; very bad for Yoshi. All of Yoshi's technical offensive options are completely negated. One 'easy' way to KO in lag is pulling of a dash KO at 200%.
  2. Yoshi lacks the range, power, or multi hit moves needed to create a wall of offense/defense when maneuverability is poor. On the defensive, Yoshi can't as easily luck his way into a punishes as other characters can. They are also much softer punishes; Yoshi can't KO with tilts bellow the mid-200%s. Up-airs are harder to connect with than they are to dodge. Also, Yoshi's already clumsy shield becomes clumsier.
  3. Egg Toss is ruined by lag, and their trajectory is not good in lag. It's hard to complete the arc properly in bullet time or when the game munches frames. Horizontal projectiles such as Falco's lasers, PK Fire, KO balls, etc. are all significantly more advantageous in lag. Characters with good horizontal projectiles are the best characters to use in lag. Every character falls behind them on the tier list of lag.
  4. In turn, Yoshi's recovery is bad in lag. He will quite often plummet to his death during frame munching lag, when an attempted Egg Toss results in a Egg Roll. It's harder to break out of Egg Roll in lag. It's harder to land on the stage without perfect placement while avoiding of wide-arced moves which Yoshi generally lacks.
  5. The only move that is both hard to punish and can threaten KO in lag, is down old fashioned B spam. It will be pretty obvious when you see this and it's usually a sign of bad Yoshi play. It's harder to punish un-safe down-Bs in lag, but it should be obvious that you're playing against an opponent who is taking stupid risks that are made better by lag. If someone is beating you that way, know that you're getting beat by a lag specific strategy, but I don't think it helps Yoshi all that much strategically. The move can still be hard punished and isn't very strong while stale. Other characters have lamer KO spam than ground pound spam (including characters with even lamer ground-pound spam strategies).
  6. Yoshi relies on laggy B-reversals more often than most characters. This might be referring more to someone trying to play Yoshi at a high level on For Glory than what a typical player would care about. It's really hard to pull off aerial Egg Lays and grounded-down-B reversals during bad internet connection. Lag takes away a lot of Yoshi's technical options.
The only type of lag where I think Yoshi has a true advantage is near 60fps input lag. Under those circumstances Egg Roll (side B) becomes one of the best moves in the game. You can literally spam Egg Roll and punish the input laggers. It's very hard to react to Egg Roll in near 60fps input lag, but it becomes easier the choppier and slower the frames are.

I think a lot of people who say Yoshi is good in lag are misunderstanding the situation. It sucks for both players involved to be playing in lag, but Yoshi is actually one of the worst characters in lag. Sure, it might be hard to shield grab Yoshi's jab or n-air in lag, but Yoshi gets annihilated on the defensive and requires hard punishes to secure KOs.

Agree? Disagree? For or against? I don't intend to challenge anyone's opinion viscerally, I'm looking for rational, non-biased, and educated opinions.

As a Sheik main, I believe Yoshi is good in lag because he doesn't require as much precision as characters like Sheik, Marth, etc. I personally don't have a really bad problem playing in lag when I don't have to worry about spacing my aerials perfectly or landing strict kill setups. To me, it's a matter of perspective. I can understand why you would believe that Yoshi is not good in lag on paper, because he seems to lose a lot of options, but it's really all about the type of lag and the person playing.

Interesting topic...

It's way harder to powershield or edgeguard highly mobile recoveries under latency, and Yoshi Bomb is 40x more powerful if you can't spotdodge it on reaction. Then you mentioned his Jab, which needs perfect reactions to punish.

Lag also screws up footsies, which is a problem that is in many ways largely irrelevant to Yoshi. Yoshi plays footsies waaaaaay less than basically everyone given his normals besides Jab and Fair are pretty horrible for footsies (I mean, when all your stuff gets cleanly beaten by Mario's Bair directly... you have problems playing footsies at all). Yoshi thrives in raw punish situations due to his damage and mobility mostly.

While Yoshi's projectile and grab get aren't ideal for lag abuse, I would definitely not say by any stretch he is close to being "worse" on latency comparatively speaking.

It depends on the type of lag really. Yoshi is complete crap in lag spikes and unstable internet.

But when it comes to input lag he does better then alot of the other crew.

Yoshi is definitely good in lag

Have you seen some FG Yoshi's?

All they do is spam aerials and eggs like crazy because it works on lag and they think they're playing Yoshi right. And that's also why some people think Yoshi is a "unpunishable lagless character" that needs to be nerfed.

But I kind of understand your point. If you try to use Yoshi in the right way (aka being patient and punishing mistakes) the lag is probably going to hurt you.

I always switch out from Yoshi when there's lag. I find it unplayable. To the person who said Sheik requires precision, please headbutt yourself in the face. You don't need precision when you can throw out 50 moves every second.

Yeah. I fought a sheik and during the end random lag came out of nowhere. He ended bringing up bringing the game back but once the lag stoped I won.

Yoshi believe it or not has ALOT OF CONTROLL. His recovory, approaches and even perfect sheilding must be very percise. Sheik doesnt need b reversals to actually make her approaching great. She can just sit there and throw needles. Its really easy to punish a yoshi in lag then a sheik. Yoshis killing moves is like landing a rest in lag.

Main things i suffer from in lag and only in lag: Sheild grabs, projectile spam, getting gimped and no combos...

Yeah Yoshi is not a easy character when you play him right.

I just meant that he actually can be annoying online in the hands of players that like to spam fairs like crazy at your face. Offline they would be destroyed.

I spam fair kinda but its not like the typical FG yoshis. I actually use alot of timing and spacing which screws me up in lag.

I think there's several Yoshi playstyles and several results depending on lag:

Spacing/punishing Much harder. Much, much harder. This is, IMHO, the most technical and difficult style of play and probably the one considered the most skilled/most suitable for high level play. Something the OP neglected is that we like trying to bait responses or make quick DI adjustments to abuse our aerial mobility. Naturally, dropped frames can screw all this up by having you drift closer to the opponent than intended or let them slip in on you unnoticed. Since Yoshi plays footsies, this hurts him a lot.

Defensive--probably not much harder than with most defensive playstyles. Although Yoshi lacks the kind of priority and KO power or dedicated traps of a true defensive specialist. Lag does hurt perfect/reactive shielding and our other options (including spacing) are pretty weak. We probably get away with more but we're inherently weaker in those options, so lag doesn't really help defensive play as it encourages defensive options we lack.

Aggressive-probably helped as it's harder to see attacks coming and our startup lag problem becomes less problematic. Still lose out to a lot of stuff if we get too aggressive or the opponent knows what they're doing. Not really much to say here.

Smash, DownB, egg toss, Fair, roll spam. Definitively the lowest playstyle. Also one that is helped tremendously in heavy lag because random spikes or dropped frames can throw off your reaction and suddenly eat a smash attack. Spiking tends to be easier too as you can just cover a couple typical routs and get lucky as the opponent doesn't see your plan and get to adjust trajectory at all. This problem only gets worse as you get better as you know what you should be able to punish and get caught by surprise when it fails--often by something that shouldn't have any chance of stopping your punish. This effect occurs for all characters, but tends to benefit characters who can live long and have quick smashes, like Yoshi.

I notice there is a definite trend among online Yoshi mains' playstyles from the low lag to the high lag. Heck. There's also a general trend for all characters to start smash spamming more as lag gets worse. Amusingly, I see more Yoshi's at hours of the day when the opponents tend to be weaker. Hmmmm...

In super duper heavy lag (you know the type, the match starts and you run towards the opponent only to somehow cross them up and proceed to run offstage) the only thing that matters is ability to cover the stage in hitboxes that kick you offstage as no one is aiming or punishing anything. We win a lot of these due to dash attack of all things. Not broken like Link or Ike, but we do probably fare better than, say, Marth (in case anyone cares)

Honestly, if we're going to have an intelligent discussion of lag effect on characters, it probably helps to try and classify lag first. It's probable that there is an "optimal" lag for each character at different styles and smash/roll Yoshi's happens to be more common than you'd think.

I think your right about each playstyle. But we all have the same trouble recovoring or approaching in lag. I keep my game super technical though

Rob, sonic and luigi. Good enough?
Maybe relatively, but everyone is going to be messed up by lag. Some characters are just harmed less than others, like the ones you mentioned.

Sonic and rob absolute get better in lag. Same as villager. Projectile spammers with good recovory or sonic with un punishable approaching.

The way I play this game, Lag makes it impossible for me to use Yoshi tbh. Can't hit any precision eggs, can't breverse properly, can't powershield jab, and I can't land a single kill move against someone who's even kind of quick.

Rob and villager do really good in lag. There one of those characters you need perfect sheilding and stuff. And there extrenely long aerials are hard to avoid.
