newbie question of course but i just want to know how it's done and when it's done.

Jab Cancel then. You jab, then crouch/shield, which will allow you to use other attacks.

Mario doesn't make effective use of this, but it's a good mindgame. You can jab cancel into a D-Smash, U-Smash if you're close enough, U-tilt, or F-tilt. You can also go into more jabs.

Jab Fake is when you just jab and don't do that final hit. Usually to make this effect you go in for a grab. Pivot Grabs are more effective for this.

You shouldn't be using this a lot, but it's an effective mindgame if you mix it in with your style.

You can also T-Stick for maximum effect with jab canceling; set the C-stick to Attack and then just hold crouch down while pressing the C-stick backwards for jabs; if you do this right your jabs should be instantly canceled while you're holding down crouch.
