I don't understand why people don't use their sidestep. It's a quick way to evade any ground attack and you can attack or grab right after. Can somebody explain to me what the downside to sidestepping (L/R + Down)?

Easily bait-able. Recovery frames happen after when your invincibility runs out.

Same as any other action, can be baited and punished. And if people panic, it's a lot easier to bait it out and punish them for it. It's a common panic move and often ends up with them spamming it, leaving them vulnerable. Wavedash is seen as better alternative for evading as it opens up more options (including a sidestep) and it's a more effective utility.

Hey, OGPlumber, welcome to the community! You will never, ever leave. For months, you will toil away in solitude, perhaps playing a few of your casual friends in some low-level competitive matches. You may bring a few friends on board your foray into competitive Smash Brothers. After a few months have passed, you will muster up the courage to go to a local tournament. You will go in overconfident, and probably not even come close to beating even the worst player there. You will then begin training. Hours a day will seemingly melt away. You will be buried away in the game, in videos, in the boards. It will consume your life. You will go to any tournament you can get to. You will begin to stop hanging out with your friends that don't play smash. Soon, you'll begin beating people at locals. Once you've run out of online resources and technical skills to train, you will begin to simply study your play, and think consciously about improvement in different situations. Maybe you'll plateau. Maybe you'll push ahead and become one of the best in your local scene. You'll attend your first national. You'll lose your love for practicing excessively, and begin to only enjoy playing with other people. You'll keep improving, and perhaps you'll move on to bigger and better things. Perhaps you'll become a great player, and perhaps you won't. Maybe you'll find a niche in the community as a character specialist. Perhaps you'll become a legendary commentator, or tournament organizer.

I just mapped out the next four years of your life. You're welcome.

Haha damn, I never thought I had a chance at being that good at smash. I'll try to see how close I can get to that prediction
