MKLeo Wins Smash Wii U at Genesis 4

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at Genesis 4 was a remarkable success, attracting over 1,000 competitors from around the world. After two grueling days featuring some of the fiercest competition the game has yet seen, only 8 players remained in the final bracket.

Winners' Bracket:
Elliot "C9|Ally" Carroza-Oyarce :4mario: vs. Yuta "LG|Abadango" Kawamura :4mewtwo:
Ramin "Elevate|Mr.R" :4sheik: vs. Leonardo "Echo Fox|MVG|MKLeo" Perez :4marth::4cloud2:

Losers' Bracket:
Samuel "RNG|Dabuz" Buzby :rosalina::4olimar: vs. Gonzalo "TSM|ZeRo" Barrios :4diddy:
Rei "2GG|komorikiri" Furukawa :4cloud2::4sonic: vs. Zack "DMG|CaptainZack" Lauth :4bayonetta2:

Perhaps just as notable as the final lineup is the number of top seeds who were eliminated before top 8. Perennial favorites such as Nairoby "NRG|Nairo" Quezada, Larry "Misfits|Larry Lurr," James "CLG|VoiD" Makekau-Tyson, Jason "IMT|ANTi," Saleem "MVG|Salem" Young and Evo 2016 2nd place finisher DNG|Kameme all missed out on the final cut.

Though not eliminated, #1 seed ZeRo began the day in losers' after an early loss to Japanese Duck Hunt phenom Brood in round 2 pools. Though he clawed his way through losers' bracket, beating a number of other top players in the process, some still doubted whether he'd be able to take the tournament.

Losers' Eighths:
Top 8 kicked off with Dabuz vs. ZeRo. After dropping game 1, ZeRo managed to adapt comfortably to Dabuz's walling tactics. Games 2-4 went convincingly in ZeRo's favor and Dabuz was eliminated in 7th place. On the other side of the bracket, CaptainZack managed to defeat komorikiri 3-1. However, the final game had to be replayed once komorikiri recognized that the launch rate was incorrectly set at 0.9. Unfazed by this setback, CaptainZack went on to dominate game 4 and officially eliminate his opponent.

Winners' Semis:
The next round of matches went by quickly. Ally dominated Abadango in convincing fashion, securing the first 3-0 victory of the day. On the other side of winners' bracket, MKLeo secured a 2-0 lead against Mr.R's Sheik as Marth. Hoping to reverse the momentum, Mr.R switched to Marth himself, treating the audience to the first ditto of top 8. However, it wasn't enough, and MKLeo advanced to face Ally in winners' finals.

Losers' Quarters:
Next up, CaptainZack took the stage again to face Abadango for a shot at top 4. In a tense set, Zack managed to best Japan's last remaining representative 3-2, securing his first top 4 finish at a premier tournament. ZeRo and Mr.R went back and forth, but ZeRo ultimately clutched the series out with a 3-1 victory. This meant that Zero and Zack would have to battle it out for a chance at finals.

Winners' Finals:
Neither Ally nor MKLeo were strangers to finals at a premier event, Ally having won Evo 2016 and MKLeo emerging victorious at 2GGT: ZeRo Saga. Not only that, but the two have faced off numerous times in the past 6 months, with MKLeo coming out on top more often. This time, MKLeo once again proved his dominance with flawless spacing and juggling. Though Ally put up a solid fight, he ultimately succumbed in game 4, when a whiffed u-smash got him punished by Marth's tipper f-smash. MKLeo made it to grand finals in convincing fashion, having only dropped a single game in top 8.

Losers' Semis:
CaptainZack put on an impressive show against his other opponents, but he couldn't manage to crack ZeRo. The legendary Diddy won losers' semis with a swift 3-0. This meant that losers' finals would be...

Losers' Finals:
ZeRo vs. Ally: a classic matchup that favored Ally tremendously in 2016. This time was shaping up similarly, with ZeRo going down a game and comtemplating what to do. However, a switch to Cloud threw Ally for a loop. ZeRo managed to win the next two games to secure a 2-1 lead. Ally showed that he wasn't down and out by returning fire with a 2-stock victory game 4. The two were neck-and-neck during game 5 until ZeRo made several crucial mistakes, including an SD which cost him the game.

Grand Finals:
Ally had earned a rematch with MKLeo after besting his long-time rival yet again. This time, Ally looked much stronger. Although he dropped game 1, he clutched out the next two for a 2-1 lead. MKLeo responded with exceptional composure and continued to play his methodical Marth. This approach paid off, as he managed to win games 4 and 5 despite going down. A new Smash Wii U champion has been crowned: one who bested every competitor in his path without dropping a single set.

Tbh, I kinda sort of know MKLeo was gonna win. Against Ally I mean. He pretty much had him on the download during the first set. Same thing in GFs, minus the fact that Ally almost reset the set.

I'm actually glad that Ally improved his result compared to his performance at Genesis 3 last year. Smash 4 in 2017 is off to an interesting start now that Leo wins instead of ZeRo.

Yay, Leo soon! An excellent competition, a lot of fun to watch with my brother. Poor Nairo and Exam, didn't even make it for top 8

I'm really sad what happened to Komo vs Zack. They should reset the entire set instead the last round, since they've played all matches on 0.9. That was a terrible decision. Komo might not even come back at the US events anymore.

In an ideal world, this would have happened for both komo vs. Zack and ZeRo vs. Dabuz (which was also played on 0.9). The problem was that finals were already running late and this would have held up Melee even more. At a Sm4sh-only event, it should have absolutely been replayed.

Lol they could have at least taken a decent pic of MKLeo. He looks like he just won the special Olympics in this photo.

The standings pic should be have Marth next to MKLeo's name. He's far more known for his Marth play than his Cloud.
But he played Cloud for all but i think his last two games. Hence Cloud and not marth.
This is a great moment for MKLeo and is gonna be a massive victory for Marth (and maybe Lucina) mains everywhere
Tbh, the lucina hype train imo started with Aba Saga GFs with Nairo, and has kinda died down since then, but I guess you could call Nairo using her for doubles and NAKAT pulling her out for VoiD a revival.

For want of a single decimal, the rules were lost.
For want of the rules, the battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the main had lost.
For want of a main, The Player had lost.
For want of a Player, Smash 4 has lost.
And so it goes in the pages of Genesis that Smash 4 lost a player all for the want of a single decimal.
