Venue
UC Davis, Olson Hall, Room 6 (Lower Floor)
One Shields Avenue
Davis, California, United States

The address is to the university itself. To get to the venue, you'll need to park in Parking Lot 10 (P10) and then walk a ways down to Olson Hall. See http://visit.ucdavis.edu/map/map_detail.cfm?assetInfo=97

Important Information
Food in the venue is okay, on one condition: you clean up after yourself. I think everyone's responsible enough to clean up their trash, so please don't prove me wrong. If we have a problem with food and trash, there won't be the privilege of food in the venue next time.

There MAY be a 64-player cap put into place as per the request of the UC Davis Police Department. The BEST WAY to make sure you reserve a spot in the bracket is by registering for the tourney (by clicking "I am attending this tournament") on All is Brawl. UC DAVIS MONTHLIES RULES

Stock: 3
Time: 7 Minutes
Items: Off/None

FORMAT FOR POOLS
8 Pools
ONLY two games will be played
ONLY neutral stages may be used
The first game will have double-blind character selection if necessary
The second game will use slob picks (for character selection ONLY)
Players with top two scores will advance to 16-player Pro Bracket
If necessary, ties for final pool placings will be broken by one 3-stock 7-minute game

FORMAT FOR PRO BRACKET
16 Players
Double Elimination
First stage is "neutral," and Advanced Slob Picks used thereafter

All regular sets are Best-of-3. Losers Finals, Winners Finals and Grand Championships are Best-of-5.

Ambiguous-Winner Resolutions
If the timer runs out, the victor of the match will be determined in this order:

1. Stock
2. Percentage
3. One-stock, three-minute overtime match

Sudden Death will NOT be played.

Suicide Resolutions: If a player ends a match with a suicide move (Bowser and Ganon's over-B, D3 and Kirby's Swallow) and the game counts as a tie, then the initiator of the move wins. If the victim of the suicide is shown in the game as the winner, then they win. It is your responsibility to consider controller port priority before initiating a suicide move.

Stalling, Glitches, and Infinites
Stalling is banned.

Meta Knight's Infinite Cape Glitch is banned.

Legal Stages
Starter stages are selected randomly. If both players agree, they can use the stage-striking system. Each player is allowed one "stage cancel."

Starter
Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville

Counter
(All Starter stages)
Brinstar
Castle Siege
Delfino Plaza
Frigate Orpheon
Halberd
Jungle Japes
Lylat Cruise
Norfair
Pokémon Stadium 1
Rainbow Cruise
Yoshi's Island

*Yoshi's Island (Pipes) is NOT a legal counterpick.
*Any stage may be played as long as both players agree.

Additional Rules for Doubles

Life Sharing is allowed.

Team Attack is ON.

Other Rules
Advanced Slob Picks: The winner of the first game will choose a stage to ban. The loser of the first game will announce a new stage to play on for the next game. The winner will then be allowed to switch characters, followed by the loser. Apply the same logic for the third match (and fourth or fifth when applicable) if there is one.

Dave's Stupid Rule: You may not counterpick a stage you have already won on, UNLESS your opponent agrees.

Double-blind character selection may be called for the first match if a player so chooses.

If there is a dispute, players will determine controller ports with Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Modified Mages DQ rule: After a match has been called, if a player is 3 minutes late they will receive a warning. At 5 minutes late, they will be given a loss for the first game of the set. After 10 minutes, they will be given a loss of the entire set.

Guidelines
BYOC: Bring Your Own Controller.

If a dispute occurs during a match, PAUSE the match. Either resolve the issue with your opponent (both you AND your opponent must agree on the resolution) or call over a T.O. and have them resolve the issue.

If there will be a potential conflict with your ability to be present at a match, tell a T.O. and receive an OK on what to do. Do NOT just run off without saying anything.

Pools aren't best-of-two; they're total-of-two. =D

In all seriousness, though, the reason we do total of two matches is to save time. Instead of counting match wins, we tally up the number of games won at the end of pools, and the players with the two best scores in terms of games won will advance.

I went back to the rules and saw the "tie" section you were referring to, and I can see why there was a bit of confusion there. But what we mean by the "tie" is if two players are tied in terms of placings at the end of pools, then that's how the ties are broken. (For example, if two players have the same score and are tied for second, who moves on? That's when we play the three-stock/seven-minute game. I'll change the rules to clarify that -- thanks for bringing it up.)

There's a very good chance we'll have Melee in the future. Right now we're still gearing up with the Monthlies and want to get a good sense of how long everything takes to run so that we'll be able to run a smooth tourney. Once we get the basic logistics down, then we'll be prepared to run events for both Brawl and Melee in one tourney.

how do stages and character picks work for 2-game pools?
Basically, the first game of the total-of-two set is like the first game of a regular set: a Starter stage and double-blind character selection if need be. For the second game, there will be slob picks for characters but the stage will still be a Starter stage. (So, essentially, the stage will always be a Starter stage in pools.)

i'd argue about the fairness but i have no intention of going (mostly because i'm already going to davis for the melee tournament and i don't want to go two weeks in a row)

If there are concerns, by all means feel free to bring them up. I remember when we introduced the ruleset for the Monthlies over at AiB, and several people brought up suggestions to shape the rules into what we have now. So we're always open to changing the ruleset.

Edit: I'm guessing the concern might be something like some characters having a decent time on all three Starter stages?

BTW that food info is way, way out of date.

I will be providing menues and phone numbers for deliver/take out places that are nearby.

2KThai is now known as KatMoRee and has a pickup option, as well as a delivery option after 4pm. There is also Thai Bistro which isn't nearly as good but a little cheaper, but they only do pick up. Not sure if Sophie's Thai Bar does pick up, I'll be checking today.

Pizza isn't limited to Woodstocks, we also have Papa John's, Dominoe's, Round Table, and a Cenario's. Cenario's is consistantly the cheapest while Round Table is, obviously the best (though very high prices).

As for californian mexican, there's a nearby Chipotle, and a little further away a Dos Coyotes or two which do pick up. Again, I'll get y'all a menu and a phone number to call. Look for me, I'll be the crewmember with long hair. If you can't find me, wait for someone to shout "COME ON, FALCO!" or "COME ON, JAMES!" After I'm done bemoaning this latest and most foolish SD, poke me for numbers/menues ;)

since pools are best-of-2 (the same pool format used for WCSL and last month's UCDM), it would be more unfair to allow a counterpick to the loser of the first match since the loser of the second match would then not be able to counterpick back. allowing only neutral stages for these sets is the fairest option without requiring a third match be played.

in any case, the winners of pools are decided by number of matches won, not number of sets, just in case that was unclear to anyone.
