Ash is loosely based off the trainer from RBY who is largely assumed to be, but never confirmed to be Red.

Ash is a loser!! plus Sakurai isn't going off any anime, except Mk's sword, which in the cartoons, is called Galaxia. I don't believe it's ever mentioned in the games

Really weird for me both of their names were Brad, so was Ness'. Also Epona isn't the horse's name it's Nigel same with Ness' dog!(named after my dog). The rivals aren't Blue, Silver or Pearl they're Baz (named after my brother).

Nice. I actually change the name of the character every time I play through a game. My standard name for the protagonist is usually George (old nickname), but it all depends on how creative I'm feeling at the time.

However, I have a really weird habit involving the Pokemon games. You see I'm an aspiring/unpublished writer (and have been for some time). Whatever book I'm working on is always lurking somewhere in my subconsious, not to mention projects which are on the backburner at any given time, and after awhile, details like character names can run together. So whenever I play a Pokemon game, I invariably end up naming the Pokemon I catch after characters from whatever book I'm working on at the time. That way, I am entertained, but I'm also getting things done.

You forgot the game he got the name to begin with. Red/Blue/Green -_-

That is not Red according to canon, that is only fanon, there is a difference.

Fanon. Sounds like Ganon's accountant brother. Anyhow, at least this particular brand of fanon isn't as bad as the "Pikachu(Brawl)= Evolved Pichu (Melee)" junk that has been floating around since E4All. I can't decide which annoys me more, the relentless contrived fanfic portrayed as fact or the idea of playing as Pichu and liking it.

Why because you buy into the fanon that everybody assumes to be canon because it sounds about right and is pretty heavily implied in GSC. Until I hear an exact confrimation, the only official Red is the one in GSC, the rest are generic Pokemon Trainers.

That trainer isn't anything other than Red. The game doesn't have to outright, explicitly state something so obvious. It's not trying to trick you or mislead you; the game assumes that you can make the connection.

I am aware of how heavily implied it is, but saying that the trainer in RBY or FR/LG is Red is not a fact, it is an assumption.
