Quick float cancel question

Hey guys, i have already read stuff about the float cancel, so please don't tell me to use the search function xD

Okay so when i want to do, for example, fair to dsmash, the way i do it is

1) X + down on the control stick to float
2) fair
3)fastfall
4)dsmash

Is this the proper way to do this or should i do the fair while falling?

For some reason i have trouble float cancelling the bair...its probably that i don't fastfall at the right moment =/
