Respect the Game

Sakurai intended to make a game geared towards casual play. It is foolish to think that the team he headed would be better at making a competitive game than competitive players (despite the obvious conflict of interest).

Not only that, but said fan-made games are just that. FAN MADE! It isn't disrespectful to write a fan fiction using the characters or setting of a popular written work, or to make Fan Art using the likeness of a character, or even to design flash games based on other games/shows.

So why is it suddenly disrespectful to mod an existing game? Sure it's rude to claim your game is objectively superior (that's like saying your drawing of the character is better than the original drawing), but it is in no way disrespectful to say that you LIKE your version of the game more. You are obviously not testing the players' skills at "brawl," you are testing them at "insert mod name here,"but that doesn't automatically make it bad.


I don't think it's morally wrong to modify a game for personal enjoyment. The ethical problems that come with breaking laws to do so in some cases is an entirely separate issue.
