OK, so I know that I don't have a Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but that doesn't mean you can't hype it. Beside, I am planning on getting a Playstation 3 anyway, once I can scrap up the cash (AKA get a job, which I'm hoping to get soon). For people anticipating Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, I'd recommend reading through this and discussing this potential issue.
Originally, I didn't see why the Marvel Vs. Capcom series was so popular. Sure it was a cross-over, but I didn't think it mattered that much. However, when Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was announced for Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network, I was interested. However, it was not coming to WiiWare due to file size limit, so I basically ignored it.
A sequel was always in high demand, but due to massive licensing issues, it seemed impossible. However, rumors were floating around that Capcom was working on Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, but once again, I ignored it, especially since I was highly anticipating Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars.
On April of 2010 (This month), Capcom announced Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. As a Wii-only owner, you would expect me to be disappointed about it not coming to the system and I will admit I am. However, rather then complain about that, I decided to join the hype train, since I know I'm getting an Playstation 3 in the near future, so might as well get it now.
However, while I am highly anticipating the game, I want to keep the anticipation to a minimum. Not because it's going to suck, I know it won't. As a matter of fact, it'll probably be an great game. However, I really doubt it'll be one of the best for both systems. I don't consider Super Smash Bros. Brawl to be one of the best titles for the Wii and it's universally acclaimed. Street Fighter IV for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 is also considered a massive disappointment. I'm worried that Gran Turismo 5 might be on the same path.
Here are the reasons why I'm worried that Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 might be the most disappointing title of 2011:
1. It will most likely be hyped out of proportion. Remember how hype you were for Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Sadly, it didn't meet most people expectations. I expect Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 to be almost as hyped if not as much or even more, making it difficult for people to reach expectation for that particular game. Heck, I wouldn't be surprise if that happen, consider that we over 150 posts in the Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 thread in the Light House, and that's coming from a non-Nintendo platform game.
2. Balancing issues. People constantly complain about balancing issues in the series, especially with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. Unless they reduce the amount of character to 30 top, the sequel will most likely face the same problem.
3. Possible delays. If there's one thing we hate, it's delays. If Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is to be expected to reach Triple A statue, don't be surprise if we have a few delays (Maybe even a year from it's tentative date now). However, this will only cause more hype, helping to support #1 why this game could be so disappointing.
But is it possible for us to avoid being disappointed that much? Yes it is.
One way to avoid disappointments is to avoid as much information about the game as possible, expect when concerning release date. Or you could do what Finalark did with Super Smash Bros. Brawl.. Check the (Possible) site of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 only and do not look at secret contents. I might do the latter if a site dedicated to this comes up.
Another suggestion is to not have an "This will be the greatest game ever!" expectation that we have with most very highly anticipated games like we do with most games. Rather, just have an Double A expectation. Some like "I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not expecting it to be perfect.". That can avoid disappointments in the long run.
And if there's delays, don't moan. Consider this a good thing and realize it will most likely make the title better.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm getting a Playstation 3 for this (And other games) and will be looking forward to playing this. I'm sure most of you are thinking the same thing. However, don't be surprise if it doesn't meet the Triple A expectation we have out of the game, because not many titles can truly be considered excellent by most gamers.
If you want to discuss this, go ahead.
