So does the disk read problem actually occur because of dust?

I was just wondering, for those of you who have had disk read problems, are your homes actually dusty or does anybody smoke? Or, for people who have not had the problem, are your homes not dusty?

So I was thinking that the problem might not be because of dust but something to do with the hardware itself...

Yes, it's likely caused by dust. I have instructions on cleaning the Wii's laser lens ( If you're handy enough with a screwdriver and an earswab ) in another topic:
