IMO, they don't have enough variety for Sonic's music. Here's my ideas:

O - Original
R - Remix

Green Hill Zone (O)
Angel Island (R) (rock)
Game Select (Sonic 3) (R)
Final Boss (Sonic 3) (R) (chorus)
Live and Learn (O)
Emerald Town (Sonic Battle) (R)
Chemical Plant (O)
Chao Garden (Sonic Adventure 2) (R) (rock)

More suggestions?

They actually HAVE about half of those, the way you envisioned them.

green Hill Zone (O)
Live and Learn (O)
Angel Island (R)
And another you mentioned, theyre all in.

I couldnt imagine Brawling to any variation of the chao garden music however.

Big, spooky castle in eastern europe.
The only problem I (The biggest Sonic fanboy I know), have with the music is the His-World nonlyrical mix. Not to say that I don't like the song, it's just that the final boss mix is better than the one they used in GHZ.

Oh, and the Sonic heroes. But hey, that's all just my opinion.

And one other thing.

CHAO...HATE...MAKE SOUP FROM HEADS...

There should have been more Genesis-era music. There are tracks from Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3, but not from S&K.

On second thought, a Chao Garden SA2 remix would be better. I'll edit that in a flash.
And I'm not saying I don't like those soings, It's just... you know. There's a lot of better songs than just theme songs.

Casino Night Zone with a Casino stage to boot would have been my choice.

Other than that:

Starlight Zone
Hydrocity Zone
Emerald Coast
Palmtree Panic(Remix of all timezones)
Quartz Qaudrant(Remix of all timezones)

I guess the music of the first and last levels are no-brainers though. Wouldn't expect Sakurai to go outside the box on this one.

Hearing the Super Mario Land music got me thinking... There were some great tunes from the 8-bit Sonic games, particularly Sonic 2. Anyone remember Underground Zone, Scrambled Egg Zone, Gimmick Mountain Zone and so on? I was blown away by some of these... they really pushed the boundaries of music for the Game Gear/Master System. Best of all was the Green Hills Zone music, which also made it into the Japanese Sonic CD as the main theme, the truly bizarre "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior". I was really hopeful that this would make it into Brawl in one of its forms, but sadly not...

With a slot machine for characters to jump into, and some pinball flippers! That would be smexy.

In regards to the music, I would have loved the Marble Zone music, or perhaps Mystic Cave Zone(some creepy goodness).

Heck, Brawl needs all the Sonic music from the Genesis.

In the UK, waiting for Brawl...
I thought Sonic got plenty of songs seeing as:
a) He's third party
b) Has only one playable representative

but still, never played the Next Gen Sonic due to not owning a 360 or PS3, poor reviews and my extreme hate for the awful characters that made their debut in that game, so I've never heard the 'His World' song. I love Live and Learn though, coming from my favourite Sonic game too. Seven Rings or whatever it's called is awful. Just awful. The only thing I DIDN'T enjoy about that game is listening to that song everytime I play the game.

Songs they should've included is Boss music from Sonic 1 or 2. Infact I was surprised that they weren't included. No Sonic Heroes music with vocals should be included. Ever. It ties with Sonic R for cheesiest songs.

Exactly. That's what I thought they were going to do in Brawl. It seems like such a no-brainer.

I think Sonic's music is really good, but the only ones I really miss is Casino Night Zone and Chemical Plant.

Hell, almost all Sonic 2's stage music is amazing. I'll take any of em.

Hey, remember that this is still a Nintendo game, and they added 12- TWELVE- Sonic songs. As much as I love Green Hill Zone, I'm extremely happy they put in Crush 40's best: Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, and His World. Playing with those in the background has me excited for sure (I'm sure they'll always be in my custom stages. always.)

But... a remix of his original theme song at the title screen would have been lovely. I don't think that's one of the TWELVE options. Did I mention there were 12?

from the genesis songs they chose, they could have at least had remixes for green hill, scrap brain, and emerald hill. they did it for angel island and that is by far the coolest sonic song in brawl, no doubt will i be playin to that tune at sonics level.

i think some of these should have been chosen for sonic: chemical plant, ice cap, metropolis, flying battery, and of course the doomsday zone music, that was simply epic for the fight with robotnik.

what they gave us though is cool and will just have to do haha

honestly, their music selection is just shy of perfect. instead of scrap brain and super sonic racing they should have had city escape and chemical plant mix.

the music rating for the game would have increased from 9.8 ---> 10.00
