yes i think it is the same idea from melee cuz i believe sakurai wants to start a story with smash bros like he wants in the subspace emissary.

Well there's supposed to be this whole "gladiator trophy" theme so the arena is probably the most fitting stage there anyway, whether or not it was in the ssbm intro.
