But how about 2P? I haven't tried Wi-Fi yet and I don't know myself, but is there an option to do a random 2P match under proper tournament rules? It would certainly lag less in that situation.

Unfortunately you can't do that 'With Anyone'. Though you can set that kind of thing up 'With Friends'.

Figured you couldn't turn off items... how about setting it for a random 2P match? Does it automatically make you do a 4P match or can you choose?

I played 4 player 2v2 with friends. We live in the same state 2 of us in East Lansing and 2 of us in Ann Arbor.
No lag at all other than the start of the match when the characters are popping in with their own animations.
