reaction time isn't a part of technical skill, it's a limitation to all humans. almost all pros have average reaction time.
no, it's not reasonable to expect sc players to play perfectly either, and if you had read my post you would have seen that I said that.

you may be limited by your APM, but some of us aren't. there aren't very many occasions where I would have done something different (within reason; obv. power/perfect shielding **** is stupid) had I been able to move my fingers quickly enough.

reaction and timing has absolutely nothing to do with APM, and the way it's calculated

I think zhu (m2k back in the day) is a player who is not limited by his tech skill, or his execution. jman too, it would seem.

Cactuar's APM

Cactuar's APM

So I decided to do Cactuar's APM because he is known for just doing what he needs to and making it work.

I used this match, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgWwkxwTf1o because it seems to exemplify what cactuar does, even if it is a bit old.

As for all the aerials, I assumed that he uses the C-stick and not the A button so that may lower his APM a tiny bit.

For DI I assumed he DI'd every hit but he was only hit a handful of times so it wouldn't affect his APM by much, even if he didn't DI them.

Bear in mind that there are a few mistakes, I am human, but I put quite a lot of time into this.

I was surprised to find out his was so high. I used to think he would just kind of stay still but watching this match closely made me notice how much he dashes. A huge factor for why his APM is so high is because of how many dashes and wavedashes he does.

Although, for some of the dash dances, some of them may in fact have been pivots. I couldn't tell because the video quality isn't that great but it shouldn't matter because APM-wise, they're the same amount.

Apparently moving like a cactus is harder than it looks :psycho:

Cactuar's movement with Fox is just about the best ever. It's no surprise that his APM is so high. Though a match like him vs. Mango (fox vs. falcon) would be a better representation, it doesn't matter really. <33 Cactuar
and yes, a lot of the wavedashes he does while dashdancing are actually pivoted.

First off, I fundamentally disagree with the statement that reaction time isn't part of technical skill. Obviously it has nothing to do with APM, but that doesn't mean it isn't a factor into how technical you are. For instance, ledge teching is considered a very technical feat, and yet it is often based on reaction time.

I guess I see the flaw in my logic now, because I'm not limited by my APM per say, but by other factors such as reaction time. I just think that since neither game can be played technically perfect (if you consider reaction time and the things I mentioned part of technical skill. think perfect control), the comparison is viable.

Nice job, stabbedbyanipple. Believe it or not, your results almost exactly match an earlier contribution from Phoenix~Lament, who tracked Axe's Fox. The matches are incredibly similar; they both feature a Fox player taking minimal damage and four stocking their opponent. This was my response to his contribution:
Wow, 300 is very impressive. The fact that Axe rarely got hit probably has a large impact on his APM. The match was so one-sided, that Axe never really had to slow down from taking damage. Axe's opponent didn't have a single succesful combo, which would take a big chunck out of Axe's APM. That being said, I would be very surprised if Axe could reach a similar APM vs. if he were facing a player of equal abilities.

Also, Axe had a couple low percent kills, causing the match to be very breif. If Axe didn't get those quick kills, what is the likelihood that his APM would be the same? Do you think he could maintain the same rate of actions over a greater period of time? Dealing more percent requires more inputs, and extends the duration of the match. If you look at Axe's first kill, he did 71% to gg7, and killed him just 13 seconds after the match had started. In those 13 seconds Axe had 46 inputs. So if you calculate the APM up until the time of Axe's first kill, the result is 212 APM. For Axe's second kill, he only did 27% damage to gg7 in 11 seconds. And 73 inputs during those 11 seconds. Axe's APM for his second kill is almost twice that of his previous; a blistering 398 APM. The fact that Axe was able to pull off multiple low percent kills leads me to believe that this match is probably not a good predictor of a sustainable and accurate APM.

Axe's APM in this match is most likely a statistical outlier because of the match's one-sidedness and the spikes in APM due to quick, low-percent kills. If paired with a tougher opponent, I would expect Axe's APM to be lower than 300.
Your addition helps us find a more accurate estimate of a player's "max potential APM," which appears to be around 300. If you would tabulate a match of Cactuar's that was more even, it would give us better insight about a stable, reasonable APM. Good job nonetheless.

Hmm, if I have nothing to do tomorrow I might do another one of Cactuar's matches that's more close than that. Probably something form Genesis if I can find a good quality vid of him. It was actually quite fun to do because I got to learn more about Cactuar's style which I find to be incredible. =O

Analyzing the match made me realize just how important movement is and made me see things I never saw just looking at the surface of the video.

Although i think there is a bit of a difference from Cactuar's match and Axe's match. While Cactuar obtained most of his APM via moving around the stage and setting up his nairs/bairs, Axe got a high APM through mostly attacking.

Not sure what it means as a whole but it sure is interesting. :laugh:

I do a lot of dash->pivot->wavedashes because of my background as a Marth player and the importance of facing your opponent with Marth. It would let me run away while limiting the amount of time I have my back turned towards them.

Anywho, I hope you learned a bit about my movement and that it improves your gameplay. Thanks for taking the time to do that write-up. It's interesting to see the numbers on my attacks. :)

Ideally, something like this would be calculated using a large number of matches, but the amount of time it takes to do each match restricts us from doing that. :(

You would think that, but what can the person edgeguarding do that'll raise APM so much higher than the person recovering? Very little.

Cactuar's APM 2

Since I did a match where cactuar was ****** I wasn't sure if he could put out APM like in a even match so I decided to do him vs Mango 2 (for a shot of mango rum). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faEeSxyQyok

It was a lot easier this time because I downloaded the video and slowed it down to 1/4 speed to make sure I saw every action clearly.

Also, even though the match lasted 3:57, I subtracted 5 seconds because those were the 5 seconds from Cactuar's deaths to the time where he could make another input.

Even though Mango is better than scar and the match was very even, Cactuar's APM didn't drop by as many as I thought it would.

Although in the match it's self there is sort of an outlier that helped Cactus out. From Mango's first death to his second (16 second long interval) Cactuar made 106 inputs. :psycho::dizzy:

What really made his APM rise was the reverse waveshines and Shffl'd Dairs. He did like 3 in a row which is 30 inputs by its self.

Maybe one day I'll learn how to move around like that. :laugh:

First off, I fundamentally disagree with the statement that reaction time isn't part of technical skill. Obviously it has nothing to do with APM, but that doesn't mean it isn't a factor into how technical you are. For instance, ledge teching is considered a very technical feat, and yet it is often based on reaction time.

I guess I see the flaw in my logic now, because I'm not limited by my APM per say, but by other factors such as reaction time. I just think that since neither game can be played technically perfect (if you consider reaction time and the things I mentioned part of technical skill. think perfect control), the comparison is viable.
ledge-teching isn't based on reaction; you ASDI as you're going towards the ledge and hit R a bit before you reach the ledge. if you were hit, you ledge-tech if possible. if not, you recover successfully. gj.

Other than the tourneyplay 2 videos and those are baaaaaad quality cuz of the livestream.

M2k doesn't techskill spam. He is just super precise and robotic with everything he does. I think he'd actually have a low or average APM simply because of how on point he is with everything he does. From edge-guarding to death combos.

he does do a lot of stuff in between stocks, and his movement is pretty good (kinda like cactuar's).

One thing I learned that's important to note...

When calculating APM in starcraft, an "action" is a single command issued to the game which usually includes more than one mouse click or key press. Building a supply depot, for example, includes three: B, S, click. Plus as previously mentioned it doesn't take into account mouse movements.

While the way you're calculating APM is perfectly valid, it isn't really great for comparisons with Starcraft.

I would ask for someone to do an APM counter of Chu/Wobbles if they weren't wobbling
but then i'd realise that no one would really know wtf is going on

Silent Wolf's APM (er sorta.... lol)

It's not an actual match but I did it anyway to see just how high Silent Wolf's APM was in conditions where he was the most technical.

He doesn't get hit or die at all in this video.
