Success and Popularity of all Characters

Alright, reboot of the old Success and Popularity thread, let's go!

In this thread, we'll be keeping track of how much money is won by each character in the game, and how often each character is used in tournament gameplay! We'll be focusing mainly on tournaments that have Meta Knight banned for this year's data collection, but we'll still continue to pay attention to MK Legal Tournaments.

By popular request, this data doesn't include the first weekend of January - the weekend of Apex.

How to read the charts:
- "Full Split" indicates that, if a player was mentioned as winning money with more than one character, the player's winnings will be evenly distributed among his or her characters.
- "No Split" indicates that, if a player was mentioned as winning money with more than one character, the player's winnings will NOT be evenly distributed among his or her characters.
- "Average" is the average of "Full Split" and "No Split."

Alright, update for 1/14/11, which will also be collapsed because it's still way too close to the OP.

We can't really draw any conclusions from this yet, but it looks like it's shaping out really nicely.

As far as MK Legal tournaments go, it's probably going to take a while for the data there to even out, since we had Apex, which slammed $6000 into the data right from the get-go.

I'm not gonna be keeping count for the rest of the year, but right now, we're looking at 16 MK Banned, and 9 MK Legal.

Also keep in mind that, because of Apex, it's going to take a LONG time for the data on MK Legal to even out, indeed.

Could you please do? I want to compare the total money won to see if the amount of money is proportionate. My goal is to see is if MK winning the most money is near the same as the top character winning the most in the MK Banned Tourneys. Maybe this'll show if he's really supremely as dominating as people make him out to be. If he's just too good, this'll prove it.

Mainly, it's the reason for the actual numbers themselves. And I don't mean for the data to even out, but for the actual proportions themselves to even out. Same percentage of money made according to the number of tourneys.

I probably explained it crappily, but I'm a fan of these kind of comparisons.

Let me put show what I mean.

Let's say there's 100 Banned tourneys and 200 Non-Banned tourneys. We make $2000 total for the Banned, and $4,000 total for the Non-banned. Now, the two top characters should make a similar amount of cash percentage-wise. Thus, let's say MK makes $400 total. The top character(let's say Snake) makes $200 total. I want to see something similar to that overall.(or atleast the overall difference isn't much, by say, a margin of 10%.)

I love math, what can I say? If you wish, you can PM me the list of tourneys as they come up, or make a chart, or post on my name as they do. I really want to keep a notable list to prove what I've thought all along; MK just makes too much, and nobody comes close to it PERCENTAGE-wise.

Yeah, I'm still doing that, it's all in the Raw Data and updated on the Excel sheet I use.

Although I'm only doing it for MK Banned.

The main reason I think you should do it for both is to prove that characters are more balanced without MK than with him. The amount of money made could be better distributed(not counting even wins). But eh.

I probably should clarify. I only want MK's final money earnings and the regular earnings of the MK Allowed tourneys. I don't need anyone else's information on that.

But for that, I would want to compare the complete data for this year's MK banned tournies to last year's MK legal tournies, to observe for changes.

Because a lot of things have changed since the MK ban. MK players have quit/are naturally going to have their MKs denature for MK legal tournaments/etc?, so observing MK Legal in great detail for this year may not result in what a true MK Legal metagame looks like, or something...

Well, even with that in mind, the point is to show the difference between them as they happen.

While that's true, the margin of difference probably isn't that great. Especially when one can check between this year and last year's differences between MK Legal tourneys.

IMO, I think the fact that people are playing him less may actually be a good thing; It discourages Pocket MK's and switching to him as a safe move. As in, it makes people want to work on other characters.

You do have a good point though. I myself want to see exactly the difference between 'em in this year just to see which one would be more diverse.

The (No Split) column assumes that all multi-main players who used a listed character in addition to their other characters relied on that one character, and that one character alone to win all of their money, which in almost every case, isn't possible...

Try the (Average) column, or if you want, a range between (Full Split) and (No Split).

Yes, yes he is. Followed by two people at 11%. Then two at 10%. Then two at 9%. Then 2 at 6%.

Meanwhile MK is being followed by Olimar at 18% followed by Snake at 6%.

Somehow the former seems more balanced than the latter. Snake being at 17% has the next closest person (2 of them) being 6% away then the next two being 1% away. MK being at first has the next closest person being 39% away. Then the next one being 12% away from the character in second place.

In other words, the word domination wouldn't be fitting since Snake is only leading by about 6%, as opposed to the estimated 39% that Metaknight is leading by.

Keep in mind that Apex is horrifically skewing the 2012 MK Legal data. And aside from that, we shouldn't really be expecting MK to be so dominant anymore, because a lot of people are likely gonna stop using him/practicing with him, etc.

In this case, I believe the best way to analyze things would be to compare 2012 MK Banned to 2011 MK Legal, especially since we can observe for timely differences in that case.

So... here's what the final data for 2011 MK Legal looks like, so go ahead and compare the data to 2012 MK Banned, I suppose.
The "Percentage This Week" refers to January 7, 2012. The 2011 data contains all of 2011 and the first week of 2012, by request.

I didn't think Apex was included in the 2012 data, I thought it was in the 2011 alone one.

Still, 29% gap compared to a 6% gap... You can't really say Snake is "dominating" in comparison to how MK was "dominating."
