Its interesting to look at this occur from the beginning. Great work as usual, although Ive realized that theres something that bugs me about how some of the data is interpreted.

When I go back and look through the tournaments for MK legal, theres only two in particular that really stand out as MK being too dominating, so something wasnt sitting well with me. It made me wonder about percentages and what it really means for one character to be x times greater than or y amount higher than another in these charts

I came away with two concerns about their intepretation, although one is familiar, aka the split characters. The second has to do with how money awarded translates to success. We generally have the standard 60/30/10 with smash. Does that mean 1st place is two times as successful as 2nd? 30 points higher? Is fourth place is 0 times as successful as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

For instance, Texas had a large circuit that measured success by awarding points to players as so:

49 players or less:

1st - 45 points
2nd - 35 points
3rd - 25 points
4th - 20 points
5th - 15 points
7th - 10 points
9th - 07 points
13th - 05 points

50 players or more:

1st - 95 points
2nd - 70 points
3rd - 50 points
4th - 35 points
5th - 25 points
7th - 20 points
9th - 15 points
13th - 10 points
17th - 07 points
25th - 04 points
33rd - 01 points

Point being that how points/money/units are awarded can change how data is viewed. Just some food for thought when youre judging the data.

Cassio brings up an excellent point. Besides, not every tourney included in these findings may have used the 60/30/10 split. If any tourney didn't, it would skew the data. Also, what if a char consistently gets, like, 4th place? That char wouldn't be represented very well in this data, cuz it wouldn't earn any money. Basically, this chart is very meaningful, but the way it's formatted, it only tells info about who's WINNING and not exactly HOW SUCCESSFUL they are in tourneys. If i've misinterpreted something, someone plz tell me. I have a tendency to sound like an idiot when I post like this.

I suppose you have a point there, Cassio, but keep in mind that 60-30-10 payouts generally only occur with tournies with lower entrant counts, while pot splits will generally pay out to the Top 8 of bigger tournaments.

And... in that way, it sort of does work out, because I wouldn't want to credit too many people in a smaller entrant tournament, while I would want to do so for a larger entrant tournament.

It's being quoted as strong evidence in quite a few debates and discussions though. Heck, it was even cited in explanations of char movements in previous tier lists.

Apex doesn't just throw the #s off for MK either. While the giant pile of $$$ for MK certainly skews the data, it doesn't change the fact that MK earns over twice the $$$ any other char does, even w/out his Apex earnings. But this data is supposed to be used to determine a character's popularity, yes? So am I expected to believe Olimar is the 2nd most used character in an MK legal metagame by that large a margin? I mean, he's a successful character and all, but more than twice as successful as Snake or Diddy? People use this data to infer things about our metagame, but there's as much japanese $$$ in there as from NA. The skew may lessen over time, but it'll always be there. That's a pretty big flaw in the data, imo.

Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: LMAO, as I was posting this, he's already removing Apex from the data XD

I'm guessing you meant "Especially since I don't really feel that 2012 MK Legal IS a true representation..." If so, then you're definitely right. This ban probably caused MK Legal tourneys to have a much higher ratio of MKs than usual. Even people that didn't main MK might have gotten a bit of nostalgia and decided to go MK at some random MK Legal tourney. On top of that, a lot of people who don't play MK would probably never go to a MK Legal tourney as long as MK Banned ones were available. This horribly skews the data and makes it seem like MK is winning so much more money compared to the other chars than he normally would.

Thats a useless statement. Maybe you were implying something about the degree of success MKs achieves, but that would be even worse so Ill give you the benefit of the doubt...

Heres some data interpretation. Money is split 60/30/10 in tournaments, assuming you have a consensus 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best character, it would be normal to see earnings reach towards this distribution. One issue that occurs is that after MK, there isnt a consensus second best character. However add together Diddy, Snake, Olimar and Ice Climbers whaddayaknow, they hit just over 30%.

Lets try this with MK banned data. Olimar, ICs, Snake and Diddy together make up a tad over 40%, and suddenly you see some similarities. I also believe that more ground is made up from the fact that greater stability is created from having a single best character rather than a group, as a result your first best characters are more likely to falter in achieving first.

Ok, when we add together Diddy, Snake, Oli, and ICs, they may "hit just over 30%", but I'm saying that, unless you're talking about MK Legal 2011, this data is badly skewed because those '2nd best chars' are not as abundant as they probably should be. That and there's probably a greater ratio of MK to everything else than there should be.
