(insert corny Christmas or Holiday themed music)
It may be a bit early, but already there are lots of people out there starting their holiday shopping for friends and loved ones. (My mother in particular likes to get her Christmas shopping done ASAP). In a similar way, I've decided to start the signups for my new tournament a MONTH early. Those who are participating in "Pilgrims and Indians" may recall I posted a thread for it three weeks or so before the actual tournament began! Since it was a 32 man tournament, I wanted to ensure enough time for both the signing up and for people to go ahead and reserve Nov. 15th in their busy schedules.
My next tournament is a rather special one and I want as many hands on deck for this one as possible. The Wii U version of Smash 4 launches in a few days in North America and by the time this tournament will start, I feel that more than enough people to fill a sign up sheet for a big Wii U tournament should have a copy of the game for their Wii U.
Anyway, enough rambling, I said this tournament was a special one didn't I? Rather than host one version of Smash 4, I decided well in advance why not both? Yes, that's correct. BOTH.
Of course, I'm not going to be hosting both versions on the same day. Instead, a tournament for one version will be held on one day, and a tournament for the other version will be held the following day. Of course, hosting such a big event comes with both pros and cons.
Pros:
It's an ambitious idea and gives some smashers a chance to try their hand at winning both (or at least placing high enough)
Larger payouts of Battle Points and (possibly) an actual reward to boot
If successful, its a huge boost to my rep as a TO and it proves hosting a tournament for both versions of the same game is feasible for budding TO's
Cons:
The format is Double Elimination with 32 combatants on both sides. This will be a bit tricky to manage even though both tournaments are separated by a couple of hours.
Super Important Info:
The Winter Solstice will be held on the second weekend in December. The 3DS tournament will be held on Saturday, December 13th at 2PM Central Time and the Wii U tournament will be held at 2PM Central Time on Sunday December 14th.
There will be two signup sheets. The one for the 3DS Version will be in red. The one pertaining to the Wii U version will be in blue. If you would like to participate in both tournaments, that's fine, just let me know when signing up and I will highlight your sign up info in the color purple on both sign up sheets. Just keep in mind that it is YOUR responsibility to be on time for both tournaments! There will be challonge pages for both tournaments and it probably goes without saying by this point, but you are required to sign up both here on SmashBoards and on Challonge for one if not both of the tournaments.
As in my past tournaments, Checking in before the tournament is set to begin is required! Failure to do so will result in your immediate disqualification upon the start of the tournament. Also in my past tournaments, I have sent no less than three PMs the week of the tournament. The first is a general reminder to set aside some time in case you haven't already to participate in said tournament. The second PM will remind you to check in on the tournament's challonge page and will be sent two days before said tournament begins (the max amount of time you are given to check in). The final PM will be sent a few hours before the tournament begins reminding you to be here/check in if you haven't already along with a link to the Twitch stream that TWS is being streamed on.
There will be an actual prize given to first place in both tournaments. Skip down to 8.5 below in Rules and Guidelines!
Rules/Guidelines:
Note: Any rules specific to one version of the game will be color coded accordingly.
1. Forum rules still apply as does good sportsmanship
2. When signing up for either tournament if not both, your signup info should look like this (username)/(challonge username)/(3DS/Wii U NNID)/ (characters you will use.) As stated above, if you sign up for both tournaments, your signup info on both sheets will be highlighted purple
2.5 If using a Mii Fighter, specify its gender and class
3. In the 3DS version, match rules are as follows

5. Regarding Custom Moves, if you own the 3DS version of Smash 4, you can easily transfer custom characters to the Wii U version. Make sure that if you are participating in the Wii U version, that if you've imported custom gear to disable it before hand (un-equip in other words)
Note: As proven by GameXplain, it is currently impossible to modify your custom characters that have been transported from the 3DS version to the Wii U version. What this means is that you should take off any and all custom equipment your character(s) of choice currently have on them in the 3DS version. Also, since you cannot switch up custom moves on your ported custom fighters, think long and hard about what loadout you want to use if you are transferring a custom character to the Wii U version.
6. There will be a chat room for both tournaments. I will send a link and the password to said chatroom in the third and final PM I will send the day of the tournament that's being held. When you are done with your matchup, you or your opponent shall report the final score in this chatroom so the proper changes can be made to the challonge bracket.
7. If you or your opponent experiences lag that causes you or him to drop out of the current round you two are on, start it over with however many stocks y'all had.
7.5 IF something comes up mid-tournament that will bar you from further participation, that's perfectly acceptable, just know you will have to be disqualified as a result.
8. Regarding Battle Points...Both tournaments will recognize the top 8.
1ST: 120 Battle Points
2ND: 108 Battle Points
3RD: 96 Battle Points
4TH: 84 Battle Points
5TH: 72 Battle Points
6TH: 60 Battle Points
7TH: 48 Battle Points
8TH: 36 Battle Points
8.5: There will also be an actual prize given to winner of one if not both tournaments. The two respective players (or player who wins both tournaments) shall receive 20 dollars worth of funds each(40 if its the same player who wins both tournaments) to spend on Nintendo's E-Shop. The winner of the 3DS tournament will have it sent to his/her 3DS and the winner of the Wii U tournament shall have it sent to his her Wii U!
9. There will be a reserves sign up sheet for those who want to participate in either tournament but cannot because of both sign up sheets being full. If someone isn't here the day of the tournament or leaves mid tournament, you will automatically take their place. First come, First serve this list is!
10. PLEASE let me know in advance if something comes up IRL that will prevent you from participating.
11. As stated above, there may or may not be an actual prize given to first place in both tournaments as well as for second and third place. Vote if you want an actual reward involved in the tournament.
12.If you would like to stream the tournament for either the 3DS or Wii U tournament (provided you have a Twitch account) that would be great! PM me ahead of time however.
UPDATE: @Jerm and @ADAPT Chance have agreed to host The Winter Solstice on their respective Twitch channels! Due to ADAPT Chance being involved with the Capcom Cup on the 13th, ONLY THE WINNER'S BRACKET will be streamed for the 3DS portion of The Winter Solstice.
F.A.Q.
Q: I don't live in Central Time. How will I know what's the proper time to participate based on my time zone?
A: Time Zone maps are your friend! i.e if you live in Pacific Standard Time, you would need to be here at for example 5:00 PM if you participating in the 3DS tournament
Q: What's Double Elimation?
A: Tournaments done DE style have a Loser's Bracket. If you lose any match in the top Bracket, you will be send to Loser's where you have a second chance at winning (or placing high enough to qualify for a BP reward). Get eliminated in Loser's Bracket and that is the end of the road for you!
Q. If someone drops out of one tournament prior to the time it begins, can I take their place on the corresponding sign up sheet?
A: Yes. Just be here for BOTH tournaments
Q: Since there will an actual reward this time handed out to the winner(s) of both tournaments, when can him/her/they expect their Nintendo e-Shop funds?
A: My schedule for everything following the third weekend in December (20th and 21st) is looking pretty packed not to mention I want a few days to just relax following me getting my Wii U for Christmas. Cutting to the chase, the winner(s) of both tournaments for The Winter Solstice can expect to get their e-Shop money in the days after the new year.
Q: May I help with running both tournaments?
A: Sure. Just be willing to work (handling PM reminders for starters)
