Basically, how it works for us humans is, you have child and adult, both of which can be broken into a male and female category. For ponies, it works like this: the child group would be called foals or yearlings (foal is more the term for baby, but is commonly used in place) and the adult just plain ponies. For genders, the female yearlings are fillies and the males are called colts. For adult ponies, the females are mares while the males are stallions. Now the interesting thing here, is that, for your teenage years, they dont have a specific term, but the term yearling only counts up to the age of about 2, which is around the time they would turn 12 or 13 in human years. Therefore, teens would just be fillies or colts depending of the respective gender, and there is no median term.
So pony doesnt actually mean younger, they are just a different equine breed, equines being the animal family for horses, zebra, ponies, etc. Ponies are different from horses for being smaller and genetically very slightly different, not for being young, ponies live just about as long as regular horses, both regularly living to be around 35.
