Sun Rise Tournament

Tokyo Japan, April 2-3 2011

Basically I just had a chat to RAIN, and he's organizing a major tournament in Japan. At this point, details are still sketchy, but I'll detail what I know, and update it as more information comes to light.

At this point, its a Brawl singles tournament, although there may be doubles, and melee may be added also, depending on interest. A 64-man melee bracket has been confirmed, although whether or not there will be a payout for it is not yet known.

There will be a pot; Japanese players are pooling together money, and entry fee money will also be added - RAIN expects the first place winner to receive in excess of 100,000 yen (about 1000 US dollars).

RAIN is expecting 150-250 Japanese players to attend. He is also hoping for international attendance.

To that end, he asked me to advertise this tournament on smashboards, gain opinions and thoughts, and relay them back to him. None of these details are set, and he's willing to change things if internationals ask; they really, really want some Americans to attend...

Query away.

-----------Basic Rules-----------
1. 3 stocks
2. 10-minute timer (Pools matches may run on an 8-minute timer)
3. Best-of-3 sets (WF, LF, and GF will be best-of-5)
4. Double elimination
5. All items off
6. Team attack on (it has yet to be determined if doubles will happen at this tournament)
7. Changing controls allowed
8. Pause is turned off

-----------Limiting Rules/Bans-----------
1. No modified controllers
2. No using infinites for stalling purposes
3. No bugs of any kind
4. No Infinite Dimensional Cape (incidental use of IDC is tolerable)
5. Ledge grab limit of 50
6. No scrooging (player may travel under the stage once from the ledge)
* "Traveling under the stage once from the ledge" is defined as dropping off the ledge on one side of the stage and reaching the height of the original ledge on the other side of the stage.
Exceptions to Rule 6:
When one of the players is attacked by the other and takes damage.
[There is one other exception, but I don't understand it. I'll update this once I get a clarification from RAIN, or if someone else can figure out what it means from the Japanese version.]

-----------Set Format-----------
Game 1:
1. Stage-striking order and controller ports are determined by Rock-Paper-Scissors
2. Rock-Paper-Scissors loser strikes one of the three Starter stages
3. Rock-Paper-Scissors winner strikes one of the remaining two Starter stages
4. Players select their characters (players may elect to have a double-blind character selection)

Game 2 (and so on):
1. Loser may select controller port
2. Winner may ban a stage from the Counterpick list
3. Loser selects one of the remaining stages
4. Winner chooses character
5. Loser chooses character
6. Repeat steps 1-5 until the set is decided

-----------Stages-----------
Starter:
Final Destination
Battlefield
Smashville

Counterpick:
Yoshi's Island (Brawl)
Lylat Cruise
Pokemon Stadium 1

-----------Timeouts-----------
In the event that a match goes to time, the victor will be decided by the following steps, in order:
1. Number of ledgegrabs (if one player exceeds 50 ledgegrabs, that player will be declared the loser)
2. Number of remaining stocks
3. Amount of damage percent
4. If stocks and damage percent identical, the match will be replayed on the same stage, with each player at one stock.
.
Confirmed:

M2K
Ally
DEHF
Nick Riddle

EDITs:

21/09/10: Venue and date confirmed. Limit of 350 people at present.
27/09/10: Tentative Brawl ruleset added.
04/10/10: Added confirmed entrants list.
08/10/10: Melee confirmed.

I would really prefer if this were around September (give me a bit more time to brush up on japanese, save more money so I can give japan an economy boost, and also go to tokyo game show). I didn't want to go to Japan this early, esp. with Pound 5 knocking on the door. I'd rather go to Japan+Pound than Japan+Apex. April is also the month of my birthday and I'd like to be visiting for a full month (rather be home for the bday), and I doubt it'd fit in well with school stuff then either.

fffuuu I'll stop cause nobody really cares, but yeah, it's just a really bad time for me to be going in general.

Other than that, sounds ****... just the seasonal timing is less than ideal.

Curious about details although it looks unlikely for EU to come to this...

I thought japanese could not play for money so what's the deal here? Cause there's still prize money to be won.
To my understanding, nationals do indeed pay (even though this is an underground national - well all Smash tournaments are "underground" lol).

No idea about the Japanese Smash scene, but the arcade culture is like...

Locals that tend not to pay out and typically money is not the goal in mind anyway; getting better and getting known seems to though. They understand the venue throws tournaments for its own profit and well the venue is all set-up for the players so no loss for them save the entry fees.

Your prizes ranges from trophies, other awards, public awareness (like your picture and/or name plastered somewhere on the walls), and "street credit" (word loosely used, and uhh usually anyway).

But this tournaments WANTS Americans to come. So regardless of how Japanese Smashers "operate"; American stereotypes in full-bloom: they will have prize money as incentive. :012:

if you've got passport questions, the japanese consulate in your respective state are the people to ask.

otherwise, yes, japanese smash tourneys aren't normally for money, but rain figured that this would be an easy way to get international interest.

there is one player in the japanese scene who's english is decent; nobu, a snake player. other than that, you kinda of have to dodge your way round. unless you're hanging out with me, of course ;)

I think, since Japan was courteous enough to have 6 people over here for APEX, we should try to double that.

At least.

America goes hard son.

American sterotype: Remember, English is the biggest langauge in the world, there are bound to be a lot of people there who speak even a little bit of it.
umm thats not true, it is very likely he could go there and find absolutely no one that speaks English.

u act like people care about/ like us lol

April's probably the worst month for me. GLHF fellas!

Although if my circumstances change, I'd love to come along.

Also, if Rain wants some foreign input, I've got one word for you: Melee.

ok BASICALLY

ive never gotten a free trip anywhere in my life (cept australia but I have to give half my winnings back)

BUT

I do KNOW PEOPLE (not saying who)

thanks to constantly asking everyone about buddy passes

i got QUITE A FEW connections

ive never used this yet (cuz they all said I had to wait until 2011, since I found them late in 2010 and they couldn't help me then)

NEXT YEAR

I can prolly get a few and bring an army of americans to Japan

I'm like 99% sure right now just as long as no one's lying to me and there aren't gay secret airline rules that I don't know about

so far me, Ally, and Nick are interested, among others

M2K's post reeks of naiveity, but if he pulls that off I'll be genuinely stunned!
